If Sony utilizes their Trophy based disc patent, would you replay your old games?

Last week, it became public knowledge that Sony had a patent filed last September for a certain technology. This technology would allow gamers to gain trophies on games that otherwise never have trophies patched in or a trophy system at all in general. This in itself can have a huge effect on the Playstation ecosystem going forward. (Next-Gen, PS Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, Retro, Sony)

Dang straight I would. Not really because I'm a big trophy hunter or anything, but it's just that trophies provide a fun reason to go back and play games.

I think the original resistance got a trophy patch if I'm not mistaken
LOOK_AT_THIS_I  +   785d ago
RFOM never got a trophy patch. This would be a good addition for some of those early games who never got the support.
A controller option change would be a great patch for RFOM as it doesnt have a modern controller setup option. That was my only complaint about that game.

Controller option change?

Valkyria Chronicles
gatormatt80  +   785d ago

What I believe LOOK_AT_THIS_I is referring to is the option to configure button mapping.

I understand your complaint against R:FOM controller setup. I felt the same way when I went back and replayed it awhile back. Though it was obviously a non issue when I originally played it back in 06 because I wasnt accustomed to what we now consider standard fps controls.

...and Soul Reaver.

Just sayin'.

Resistance: Fall of Man
The Orange Box (Half-Life 2, HL2 episodes 1 & 2, and Portal)
Civilization: Revolution
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty

I completely agree! Especially when the trophies are something a little different that encourage you to explore more ways to play. Take Dishonored (as a game that already has trophies) for example: without trophies, I'd probably only play it through once - maybe twice if I really want to experience different ways to play. But the trophies will encourage me to play it at least three times.

And AC1, Saints Row: 2, Silent Hill: Homecoming and MOH:Airborne are just a few I'd like.

trophies and achievement are the way forward, they are a nice reward

WOuld be nice though if you got something free for getting a certain amount of trophies in a game, like a free gamer picture or somthing

Ubisoft gives you stuff, with their uplay which are awarded to you for getting point/trophies. Also some games offer a wallpaper if you get a platinum(ff13 comes to mind) but I also would like to see more of it, or that idea to become the standard.
trenso1  +   785d ago
some games gave you home items i got a sonic shirt from i think sonic adventure or something, and the namco museum game gives you the arcade machines to put in your home so people can play when they visit

In the same ball park, you could get Catherine avatars for beating the first babel stage within X period of time.

YES !!!! Great motivation to replay classics.
sloth3395  +   785d ago
i only replay the games that are fun wouldnt replay a game just for trophies
Tetsujin  +   785d ago
I feel the same way, just because it has a trophy patch doesn't mean I'm gonna play it again to boost my score. I'm also sure there's going to be some restriction to certain games (Final Fantasy 11, and Socom 2 come to mind) with online and how that will fit into this (if it even gets the green light).
Skate-AK  +   785d ago
I would even buy older games from GameStop if they all had trophies.
Iltapalanyymi  +   785d ago
well as i have said before; trophies are pointless. but it is really nice to have the trophy list, because you can see all your games. my own list for example would look more "complete" if it had tekken 1 2 and 3 in there.

but yeah, i would definitely play them again just because.

A nice addition, but I would play current games over older games (unless I never played it).

Trophies are not a true deciding factor for replayability, it is the experience for me. Also The length of a game could be a problem, such as RPGs. I play many games released within a year so it leaves little time to even consider replaying older games.
pr0t0typeknuckles  +   785d ago
Well considering that i already do play my old games, yeah ll definatly play them over for some trophies.
wishingW3L  +   785d ago
I would replay Valkyria Chronicles.
Hicken  +   785d ago
I do anyway. I still have my old games because I like them. I rarely ever buy a game I wind up not liking: I'm picky like that.

Having trophies would be a nice little bonus, but I don't need any reasons to go back and play old games... except that I want to play them.

Which I do, rather regularly.
P_Bomb  +   785d ago
Hell to the yes.

Everything they patched that I still owned (Uncharted, Warhawk, BF: Bad Company, TombRaider: Underworld, Burnout Paradise, GTA4, MGS4) I went and replayed for trophies. Same with some HD Collections. When in Rome. This would be no different.
Brucis  +   785d ago
If I enjoyed them, sure I guess. If it wasn't a fun game I'm not going back just for Trophies.

remanutd55  +   785d ago
Motorstorm, Resistance Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles are getting a replay from me if they support trophies.
Dark_Overlord  +   785d ago
I definitely would :)

Something puzzles me though...

"But if Sony makes use of this patent for the PS4 or even currently for the PS3."

It's already been confirmed that the PS4 isn't BC, so it makes no sense, or am I missing something?
LOOK_AT_THIS_I  +   785d ago
Gaikai possibly?
Dark_Overlord  +   785d ago
Forgot about that, this patent would work perfectly with it :)
Roper316  +   785d ago
If I play a older game it's because I really liked it and want to experience it again. I don't play any game just for trophies weather it's a older game or new a game.
hazelamy  +   785d ago
totally agree, i might go back and play games i like, but i'm not gonna play ones i don't just for some trophies.
DeletedAcc  +   785d ago
Oh yes i would also buy SILENT HILL 1 on ps1 ^_^
patsrule316  +   785d ago
I can't think of a game that I have and already played through and no longer play that I would pick up and start playing just because trophies were added. If there was an old game I had thought about getting but never did, and now it had trophies/achievements maybe that would push me to get it. But no, I wouldn't start playing what I had already played and experienced just for the trophies.
SkullBlade169  +   785d ago
I don't really care about Trophies anyway.
no_more_heroes  +   785d ago
Does this count only for ps3 games? Because if they could extend this to even ps1 games, then trophy support for Crash and Spyro 1, 2 and 3 is an absolute MUST!
rainslacker  +   785d ago
Platform isn't relevant to the patent. It could be done on PSP, PS1, PS2, and older PS3 games. At most you would just need a system update to handle the trophy system for older systems, and probably would only be available through connected systems(PSP/PS3 and above).

Technically it could be done for any system outside of Sony hardware, but since there is no infrastructure for it it won't happen.

barrypotter  +   785d ago
oh yeah, got games sitting there waiting to be played still. gives me a reason to play them instead of the new ones.
aDDicteD  +   785d ago
of course! it is a reason to replay old and classic games.
ziggurcat  +   785d ago
if this means trophies for games when they weren't mandatory, i might pick up a few games i sort of passed on (like ratchet & clank tools of destruction).
remanutd55  +   785d ago
Oh my, i forgot about Tools of Destruction, yes i would replay it again.
azshorty2003  +   785d ago
I do anyway. This would be a big bonus!
