The Battlefield 4 reveal - an exercise in shader sex and insidious improvement - TGV

The Gaming Vault writes:

"On first pass, Battlefield 4 seems depressingly like business as usual for the next iteration in the Battlefield series; a franchise that has notably been awarded its own, gold-crusted bi-yearly spot on EA’s FPS conveyor belt. With the exception of those explosions. Those explosions look mighty nice and all fancy looking.

Yet, despite what such cursory first looks may tell us, especially those of us who live in Europe and whose half-lidded eyes and sluggish morning cerebrums fail to calculate even the most rudimentary of things, the Battlefield 4 GDC reveal is more than just a glimpse into a Frostbite Engine 3 powered future, its also a very definite, albeit limited, read-between-the-lines affirmation that DICE is changing things up in its newest Battlefield excursion for the better.

At least I think it is anyway."

The story is too old to be commented.

I'm most blown away by how incredible the facial animations are. With so much power under the belt for the upcoming consoles, your standard games are going to make L.A. Noire look like child's play.

Bitsnark1217d ago

Yeah, those faces are errie indeed. Speaking of L.A. Noire, I do wonder how their next game, Whore of the Orient (working title) is shaping up.

Its been a bit quiet on that front lately.

But this is Team Bondi we're talking about so that's par for the course I guess :)

I didn't watch the full video but we need to see what they've done with multi player before we judge what they accomplished. Of course PC's have the latest and greatest hardware to make the footage look like an improvement in Single player over BF3. Fixing the gameplay mechanic flaws in Multi player should be top priority.

BF4 environmental effects like Smoke, Dust, lighting, texture detail/rez and the speed of the destruction/explosions have been greatly improved and seem unmatched, on PC using god knows what PC hardware or how powerful the hardware is.

Bitsnark1217d ago

I completely agree with you on the multiplayer front; that'll be where fans of the series truly gauge their success I believe.

DICE are trying to please all of us. bringing back features from BBC2 and BF2 at the same time offering some close quarters cod style maps

Bitsnark1217d ago

That's the sort of the impression I get really.

Stuff like the sandbox and squad elements that they're trying to incorporate into the single-player side of things are welcome additions indeed!

I don't understand the negativity from some press members and/or gamers. complaining about "same old same old". wake up!!! it's not gonna get any better than graphical improvements from now on, and maintaining a steady progress in visual quality. unless there's a giant leap in computational power and let me put the emphasis on GIANT. facts are: we need better AI, fresh and new gameplay ideas. but battlefield fans like myself, wanna stick to the good old battlefield formula plain and simple that's it. SP is a plus but it comes down to multiplayer experience one of the finest out there. I enjoyed 1942/1943 BF2 bad company/ bad company 2 and BF3 + DLCs, and you know what all I see is improvement throughout - they're pushing the boundaries, damn hard at DICE both technically and artistically FACT! if people are jealous of what they're looking at in those 17minutes - deal with it. Battlefield fans are happy and that's enough.

"same old, same old" is about the gameplay, not the graphics, most people are quite pleased with the graphics.

but really, the gameplay... it looked boring as hell, the player just standing and shooting to make beautiful explosions... battlefield fans shouldn't be happy with this, they should want better form their favorite games. take away the graphics those 17 minutes looked more boring than CoD.

anyway I guess BF fans play it for the multiplayer and nothing has been announced about it yet.

Detoxx1217d ago

We BF fans care about the multiplayer, and we know that DICE is the best when it comes down to that.

grailly1217d ago

well, I had already stated that in my comment, and I don't think it's a good excuse to make a boring game.
