How BioShock Infinite ripped off one of the greatest games of all time and nobody noticed

Yesterday, 2K was proud to release BioShock Infinite, the spiritual successor to BioShock and BioShock 2. A grand departure from the underwater adventures inspired by Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, Infinite takes place on another monument of man’s arrogance, but this time floating amidst the clouds.

The premise of Infinite sounds all too familiar, however. (BioShock: Infinite, Chrono Trigger , Culture, PC, PS3, Retro, Xbox 360)

Wow. I am one of the biggest Chrono Trigger fans you can find, but this article is just ridiculous. What makes Columbia unique isn't the fact that it's a floating city at all, it's the atmosphere of the city and the transportation method the game uses.

Name another game with something like the Sky Hook system and get back to me.
Jourdy288  +   796d ago
I'm a huge fan of Chrono Trigger too, and while I don't think the that BI ripped off of CT, there are some interesting parallels between Zeal and Columbia.

I knew i recognized the design from somewhere. Here it is folks. Why credit wasn't given is beyond me. They played it off smooth by making everyone believe it was original.

As long as they add enough freshness to it and make it their own unique thing then it's ok.

Chrono Trigger was apart of all that Time Travel stuff going on in games in the 1990's...

There are like 30 time travel RPG's.

Everything has been ripped off by someone. Cmon? Did u want them to actually give credit. They were all reading a book about the worlds fair at the turn of the century. Rapture proved the philosophical nature of Levine's story. Is it possible they got the idea of a floating city and decided to make it fit in? Sure. But all ideas come from somewhere.

See I just ripped ^ this ^ guy off... just changed "somewhere" to "someplace."

I think the answer is more direct.
Ken Levine: "Guys, with BioShock we did a game about an elitist utopian world that was built under the sea. How about we turn the gimmick on its head and make a game about a utopian world set in the skies? Deal."

Sometimes when it looks simple, it is.

Campy da Camper  +   796d ago
Yes. Its like someone painting a car and someone saying, 'man, that color has been done before." There are only so many color variations. What matters is the way the car was painted. How does it flow with the body or the car? Is it done well or just slapped on?
-Gespenst-  +   796d ago
There's a difference between being influenced by something and plagiarism. In the best case, people use something seminal as a spring board to new things (shoulders of giants and all that), while in the worst case, people just cluster around seminal things like flies to shit, and render it completely stale.

I don't think Bioshock plagiarised or was influenced by Chrono Trigger though.

masa2009  +   797d ago
There is a semi sequel called Chrono Cross, which is one is better is debatable, but in terms of gameplay, Chrono Cross is more accessible to an action gamer because you can skip most battles.
These are turn-based games so it's a definite plus.
Story in CT is good, but the battles are run of the mill turn-based JRPG combat. It's pretty slow paced.
hay  +   797d ago
Depends on the platform. DS and Touch devices have some improvements over the SNES version. PSX on the other hand contains pretty sweet anime cutscenes made by Toriyama(Chrono Trigger Char artist, Dragon Ball creator) and additional unlock museum.

Though you can emulate original SNES version for free on your average washng machine.
-Gespenst-  +   796d ago
Chrono Cross is a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger, not a "semi-sequel", I mean have you played it? Also it's unbelievably awesome. They're both incredible games that have yet to be topped.

I don't really think Bioshock can win against any of the best RPGs, it is a shooter at heart. It shows in it's shooting gameplay- which kind of seems to spoil the story a bit.

So they invented the concept of an airship and floating city?

The idea is as old as time itself and many stories especially during the industrial revolution and the steam revolution had visions of a floating cityscape powered by steam

Thank you. Do you remember when games all had the fire level the ice and the jungle level?

Its a setting that's been used before? I hope no game ever takes place in a city again.
Doctor_Freeman  +   797d ago
Eh almost every game these days borrows ideas and concepts from other games these days. Doesn't mean they ripped off anything off from anyone.

Infinite is amazing, had to tear<{pun intended} myself away from it.

Is this guy Serious. Oh god this is retarded. This guy needs to get an education outside of Videogames.

Maybe Read Gullivers Travels.Someone should tell Johnathon Swift. No wait he's been dead for almost 200 years.

then again Hyao Myazaki and the folks at studio ghibli might want a word as well seeing as laputa aka castle in the sky also predates both Infinite and chrono trigger.

Seriously the guy has probably never touched chrono, I haven't.

They went with a world under the sea, but did not want to do that for a 3rd time, so the setting is a world in the sky. It's not ripoff.

Too much these days, does not matter in what way - people say it's ripped off.

Just because someone puts an idea out to the public first, does not mean they were the first to have the idea.

Light bulb rings a bell. Was invented years before Edison tried to patent it, but he was too late and it was already patented by a guy called Joseph swan a year earlier. And Edison was stripped of it.

But people today still think Edison invented it.
arronax-1  +   797d ago
Then why the hell are you bitching if you don't have anything to go on? Did you even read his article? He already explained one of the arcs.
ApolloTheBoss  +   797d ago
It's a little something called inspiration. New ideas come from old works. In a sense, There's really no such thing as originality.

This article is wrong on so many accounts. The main theme in Chrono Trigger is time travel. About being able to fix mistakes.

The main character picks up different people from the past, present and future to help fight Lavos, an alien who crash landed on earth and has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the Schala. The Songbird sees itself as Elizabeth's protector. In Chrono Trigger, Schala's mother forces her to use magic to try and steal Lavos' power.

There may be similarities here and there, but they are so inconsequential, to call it 'ripping off' is a farce. The author is forcing parallels where there are none.

We always have to have that one guy who ruins everything for everyone. You know, the guy who talks during the movie. The guy who backseat games. The guy who sings obnoxiously to bad songs. The guy who over expresses his distaste for some food at a restaurant. Yeah, that's what this guy is.

Like it or not, there are many common ideas floating around when it comes to fiction. There will always be similar ideas and themes. The only way to truly make your story unique is by throwing something new into the mix. An element that other stories (to your knowledge) never had, while giving the story strong writing and good characters.

Plus, it's the experience that counts, not how a piece of fiction supposedly "ripped off" something that came before it. This guy is like that one author who claimed that Assassin's Creed copyright infringed on his book that he wrote many years before the series existed. Yet, even that author already had similar ideas to other previous works before him. This article proves to me that people are looking for any excuse to take a good thing and ruin it for everyone by saying, "Look at me! I have an opinion different from yours! I will annoyingly explain it, too!"
arsg  +   796d ago
That is true, Chrono Trigger was the first thing in the history of storytelling to have a floating city in it.

Two thoughts:
What matters most is not who does something first, but who does it best.

Likenesses are great pitfalls; what may seem similar is not the same as...
it is the roughness of the eye, and the simplicity of the mind, that makes two
things seem alike.
look for the nuances, the subtle but significant differences...

The correct title of this article should be "How Bioshock Infinite ripped off one of the greatest games of all time and nobody BUT ME noticed!" It's all in the writer's mind.
Picnic  +   796d ago
I hate headlines like that 'and nobody noticed'.

The game was released yesterday. If anyone noticed they would have had to have had not only the time and the inclination to post their observations on forums but to have posted on a forum that the article writer happened to have seen.

For that gross assumption that 'nobody noticed' it deserves to be assumed that somebody did notice and the article then becomes more noticeably the ego trip that it probably is, regardless of what valid observations it might happen to make along the way.

If I had to choose between the three Bioshock games so far and Chrono Trigger, I'd pick Chrono Trigger every time. The game is perfect.

I don't think Bioshock drew any influence from Chrono Trigger, but I suppose it may have drew influence from things which drew influence from Chrono Trigger hehe.

Also worth mentioning that there's an underwater city-ish thing in CT too- the Ocean Palace.
