Female Heros “Less Profitable” Because Publishers Aren’t Giving Them a Chance

JI of RGN writes, "According to a new statistic released today by video game researchers, studies have been used to show that female characters in video games serving as the main character provide less profit to publishers than male character driven games such as Halo or Gears.

After the explosive success of the latest Tomb Raider title by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix it is almost negligent for researchers to continue this line of thinking when these same studies have also revealed that female characters receive less than half the funding for advertisement as their male companions on the average game release.

The success of breakaway title Mirror’s Edge is also pointed to as a strong source of inspiration for the gaming community as the upcoming title Remember Me is being chosen for debate amongst fans and speculators who may be considering things from the investment side of things.

If you aren’t giving a game the proper investment, nobody will know it exists. Tomb Raid... (Culture, Remember Me, Tomb Raider)

Tomb Raider and Mirrors Edge are both very big titles with female characters
Romudeth  +   543d ago
Actually Mirror's Edge tanked. But that may have been due to the gameplay itself and not the protagonist.

No it did not that was a amazing game i dont know where your getting your facts
Pozzle  +   543d ago
Two million copies sold is hardly "tanking".
Romudeth  +   543d ago
It doesn't matter if the game was great to you or some people, it didn't sell that well. Why do you think it never got a sequel? Not enough people bought it. That's what's considered a failure.
tristanwerbe  +   543d ago
There actually making a sequel for Mirrors Edge....
Romudeth  +   543d ago
Last I heard that was just a rumor. Either way if the game was that successful we would have had Mirror's Edge 3 or 4 by now.

Just saying...

only one out hundred titles with female lead able to make profits, its pretty risky considering how much games cost to make. ill say they have every reason not to
Hitman0769  +   543d ago
Only 60 out of any hundred titles period might make profit. it doesnt really matter. and if you invest only half or less what you invest in male protagonist what do you expect your results to be?! lol
Pozzle  +   543d ago
But how many games with male leads sell just as badly? Just walk into any game stores and you'll see shelves and shelves of games with both male and female protagonists that either didn't sell well, went straight to the bargain bin, or are games you've just never heard of.

And I'd be willing to bet their sales had nothing to do with what gender the protagonists were, and more to do with the quality of the game and/or the amount of marketing and money that went into it.

Nariko is the greatest female lead of all time.
KingKelloggTheWH  +   543d ago
It doesnt help that when some of the companies make games with female leads they feel the need to ram it in your face, the fact that they are female shouldn't define the character.
ShaunCameron  +   542d ago
And why should they? All games regardless of what gender the lead character is are a crapshoot.

What the author forgot to mention is that Tomb Raider being an established IP helped along in the sales of the latest game.
