Fully Fledged XCOM: Enemy Unknown Headed to iOS, and Why It's Terrible for Gaming

Virtual KatzI’m pretty sure I here the crowds outside my windows now. Yup, sure enough I even thought about writing this article and the pitchforks and burning torches are tapping on my bedroom glass. How could it be a bad thing to bring one of the best games of 2012 to iOS, the Apple Operating System, in a full package that is enjoyable on consoles and PC’s? Why is a full retail game a problem on the go? As for a report that originally surfaced on IGN, via a PAX East announcement, that XCOM: Enemy Unknown, would be coming to fruition, this is indeed the case. It’s not bad for consumers that haven’t played it, but it is for those that own it. It’s also bad for the industry in general. Developers ultimately make the decision on what to do with their own game and how they want to distribute it. While it is possible for XCOM to reach audiences it may have never reached before, the issues are that the results of the announcement will impact the industry and direction of others in the future. That is indeed a problem (Android, Dev, EA, iPad, iPhone, Mobile, PAX, XCOM: Enemy Unknown)

They need more thinking and strategy games for ios.

Instead of all the dumb slide your finger across the screen really fast over the gems game.

What they need to do is create more SP content, more guns and characters, more maps and more enemies and then port all that goodness to Wii U. Both X-com AND Civ Rev are begging to be on that console. It would be a natural marriage.

I'd certainly buy it for my iPad as long as it was priced in line with other iPad games (and not EA's joke pricing).

I don't understand the logic here. To address a couple of points: adapting XCOM to iOS isn't somehow going to magically divert resources away from the completely separate teams working on patches/DLC content AFAIK, and instead will actively contribute to the war chest for future expansions.

Opening games up to a wider audience has historically never been a bad thing, and in this case, it makes sense. The point about controls is a total non-issue: touchscreens work brilliantly for strategy games, and it should feel really immersive on a tablet (probably more intuitive and convenient than a controller, and on par with a mouse). I also agree with MilkMan above for the same reason - people moan about touchscreens, but they're actually a great fit for strategy and other genres (like, bizarrely, bullet hell SHMUPS).

I've already got XCOM on PC, so I won't be buying it again, but I fail to see how this is bad for the industry at large.

I agree.

Not to mention, what different does it make to anyone whether they wanna put it on IOS or multiple platforms anyway? Why wouldn't a developer/company want to expand their horizons, having knowledge that many people have different systems, consoles, etc?

The fact that this is even brought into question is dumb as hell.

I agree, hopefully it goes to Android but It looks like we will have to wait months after the iOS version if at all.

meh, I felt the same way about xcom going to console in the first place. But the game turned out great anyway. I could go on and on about how consoles ruin gaming, but they dont.
