FOX Engine Generated Joakim Mogren Would Crush Quantic Dream's PS4 Tech Demo

RipTen writes:

"If the CG rumor is proven true, the biggest shocker in all of this would be the foreshadowing which took place just a few weeks ago by an unsuspecting David Cage of Quantic Dreams while on stage at the PlayStation 4 reveal. Let's go back for a moment to this reveal in mid February and refresh everyone's memory.

David starts his presentation by saying that the one feature he wants the most in future hardware platforms is the ability to convey "emotion." He referred to it as the "holy grail of video game creators." Now, doesn't the holy grail sound like something Hideo Kojima might want a piece of?

Cage then shows us a brief demonstration of the new engine he and his team have developed running in real time on the PlayStation 4 hardware. During the demonstration he made the following comment:

"This is the quality we can get from our future games, and we know we can go even further..."

Well, how much of a lead would Kojima have in the race for realism on... (Fox Engine, Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, PS4, Quantic Dream, Tag Invalid, Tech)

I want to believe!
Nostradavis  +   858d ago
Seriously how big of a win would this be for Kojima if he actually pulled something like this off.
guitarded77  +   858d ago
We'll find out in a week. Get your shovels ready... the GDC conference hall is going to be knee deep in poop when everyone sees what Kojima has planned.
GrizzliS1987  +   858d ago
Does noone think that maybe, just maybe, the interview was not in person, and that the reasoning behind it is because he was too busy making games to come meet up for an actual in-person interview? This to me seems like a conference call interview made believe to be in person for obvious reasons.
C-Thunder  +   858d ago
He's clearly fake. I'm pretty sure he's in the little flash to game play early in the video.
nypifisel  +   858d ago
I'm sorry but it's impossible. On the GPU Technology Conference nVidia showed how far they've gotten in simulating humans graphically. It's probably the nicest looking thing you've seen but just to do the face took 4 900 billion (!) flops per second in 60fps. That's half of the latest Titan GPUs computing power (that's the most powerful commercial GPU in the world).

See it here:

I'm excited for the Phantom Pain demonstration at GDC though!
crxss  +   858d ago
Joakim being CG is the most absurd thing I have heard today. Kojima is rofl'ing somewhere
LOL_WUT  +   858d ago
This a win-win situation for PlayStation gamers IMO
xursz  +   858d ago
Just informing people - "Joakim" was wearing a microphone. It was an awkward interview but it's not CGI. Maybe they added a mic around his collar for added effect? I doubt it but anything is possible I suppose.

Even if it was new CGI tech it's not really comparable to QD's demo because that was said to be in-engine rendering (ie not CGI).

edit: also its nice to see QD has set the new standard to beat for photorealism rendering. I've always been a fan of their games.

The "Titan" is not the most powerful GPU in the world, the GTX690 is, the Titan is newer, but it's not as powerful as the GTX690, not to mention, two GTX680's are 1. - Cheaper, and 2. - more powerful than both the GTX690 and the Titan, I can tell from your comment that you know nothing about computers.

Also, the guy in that interview was not CG, if that was CG it would be beating out Hollywood CG, and quite frankly that's impossible.
Insomnia_84  +   858d ago
I love the way Kojima fu*^s with our minds every time lol you gotta love that man! A legend in video game history.

Typical Ripten. Some people may not remember a few years ago when they published a BS article here and then N4G posters went to their site and ripped them a new one. The writer and the site editor were attacking people openly left and right. I can see they have yet to mature their reporting.
mistertwoturbo  +   858d ago

The Titan IS the most powerful single GPU in the world. The GTX 690 is basically GTX680SLI.

Allow me to spoil the fun but let me tell you what I'm pretty sure is up: digital make up

Remember the opening from xmen 3? Same thing here, with some Cgi over an actor's face they'll transition to in game stuff to make it look seamless but it will be a cheat, it will look great in the game but not as good as here but close enough

Mark my words

@nypifisel ,.. I am sorry,.. but that real time quantic dream's demo of an old man,..

Just shits on what Nvidia has showed,.. It really does
xHeavYx  +   858d ago
The title of this article is really stupid. Why not just say "New Fox engine really cool" or something like that, instead of attacking Quantic Dreams's engine.
"Dude, my d!ck is bigger than yours"
smashcrashbash  +   857d ago
Because that wouldn't cause the amount of chaos and attention they crave. The best way to get attention for your article to make us be at each others throats.

It's possible, PES14 look that good to.. idk how does look in motion,
but if that guy is real anyways, then he is a really good actor, and if is not, then we can tell eater way that this game will be amazing.. like every other game from KOJIMA i meant JOAKIM, sorry..

What a stupid article. First of all, there was no indication that the interviewee was CG given by Kojima, only mentions of realistic characters. Second, we've seen Fox engine. We've seen that it comes nowhere close to the Quantic Dream tech demo in realism.

We're approaching reality in-game folks, but don't get ahead of yourselves.

We will see and I like that tech will be pushed harder this gen so let's see

QD's next gen engine will be quite powerful since their current gen engine is awesome

That Kara demo was awesome
colonel179  +   857d ago
Wasn't Quantic Dream's demo real time?
xPhearR3dx  +   858d ago
If Phantom Pain isn't a MGS game once everything is revealed at GDC, I'd be really surprised. It almost seems to obvious at this point where someone is going to pull a fast one.
wishingW3L  +   858d ago
yeah. The trailer had Volgin and Snake in it and don't tell me that those aren't them because they look the same!
Onehandband1t  +   858d ago
Don't forget Psycho Mantis as well ;)
Mouktouk  +   858d ago
It's probably a Metal Gear game, but I hope it's a spin-off and not a part of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (even though I wouldn't mind if it was).

The Phantom Pain really looks awesome, I wish it has its own game along Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (so we can double the awesomeness).
xPhearR3dx  +   858d ago
That would be nice.

ginsunuva  +   858d ago
CG =/= real time. You just failed.
papashango  +   858d ago
Ginsunuva presents a very logical reply. But based off his disagrees vs mrmancs agrees. We can see N4G users operate based on wishful thinking rather than logic.
jacksheen0000  +   858d ago

I believe the cg rendered on the PS4 was real because if you listen closely to the demo, you'll notice how the atmospheric background noise changes in sound as it cut back and forth during the interview.

This means there are two separate footage that was pieced together to make this demo.

So that leaves me to believe each footage were done at different times.
#4.2 (Edited 858d ago ) | Agree(2) | Disagree(1) | Report | Reply
People actually believe he was CG? lol

I wonder if those same people think all outside life is CG too. A multiplatform engine will not have better visuals compared to what Quantic Dream has.
ANIALATOR136  +   858d ago
QD tech demo could have been rushed and a quick representation seeing as their focus is on Beyond Two Souls right now so its entirely possible we can see much better but I still don't believe Joakim Mogren is a computer model

a_squirrel  +   858d ago
The old man face had more to do with realistic human face characteristics, like, how the skin stretches. Being able to have a model's face to move around realistically is different than just making the face look real.

Realistic movement helps capture emotion that video game character's faces usually lack.

loulou  +   858d ago
please tell us why that is then???

why is it impossible for a multiplat engine to outperform a first party one??

oh i forgot, that on n4g, anything that comes from sony is the best in the world..
DivineAssault  +   858d ago
multiplat engines are universal thats why.. They arent built to use every ounce of power from the systems abilities because it has to use the same codes on all other consoles..

If PS4 for example has more GPU power, exclusive engines will use all that up while minimizing CPU tasks n vice versa.. A multiplat engine will have to find a medium that can be used across all the systems.. QD may put out an engine using that 8GB GDDR5 thats impossible to be achieved on other consoles..
loulou  +   858d ago
hmmm. but what about frosbite and the cryengine? these engines are far above any first party engine. R*s RAGE engine slaughters the first party engines used for infamous and crakdown in openworld.

also, since when has ram been the most important component in consoles and pcs??????
Minato-Namikaze  +   857d ago
Crysis get killzoned everytime. On PC they may be better engines, but on Consoles GOW, Killzone, and Uncharted are undisputed graphics kings.
Rainstorm81  +   857d ago
I agree loulou

Rockstars RAGE engine is easily the best open world engine to date.

But on consoles CRYTEK and Frostbite doesn't have the same fidelity as GG Killzone engine.... KZ3 MP is an example of this its easily the best looking console MP FPS to date

-Gespenst-  +   858d ago
There is something slightly uncanny about Joakim... there's no getting around it...

Also I don't see why something like him couldn't be done on a PS4 if L.A. Noire was achieved on a PS3.

L.A. Noire is the game Quantic Dream wish they could make, let's get real.
Welshy  +   858d ago
"L.A. Noire is the game Quantic Dream wish they could make, let's get real."

Was all set for hitting that agree button till i saw this...

Heavy Rain achieved so much more than just graphics, both games are almost incomparable since one is an open world detective game and the other is an emotionally driven game about family etc.
solid_warlord  +   858d ago
What has Heavy Rain achieved? A game where u press a button and CGI determines the next cutscenes...It has no gameplay what so ever unlike LA noir were u can control the player, run amd take a car, move and controll ur character as u would in any game. U cant do that in heavy rain. I played the demo of Heavy rain and it was the worst game i ever played. That type of game will NOT have a huge audience in video games.
Welshy  +   858d ago
In LA Noire did your decisions from the previous case mould the envorinment of the next etc? i could go on and on but it's pointless because both games are COMPLETELY different in terms of what they do, you clearly just dislike the genre Heavy Rain took up and no amount of discussing it with you will change that.

If you dislike the genre, just say that, don't cherry pick a game and say a game is terrible.
I wouldn't say Calvin Harris is terrible because i don't like dance music, he's clearly good at what he does and his genre is the reason i don't like him. Very same logic applies here for Heavy Rain and LA Noire.

What about TellTales The Walking Dead? That "isn't a game" either, right? You just point and click stuff and the cutscene does the rest?

you're taking one similarity (advanced facial animation) and making that one bullet point a case for both games being identical and LA Noire doing a better job, you just don't even make sense.

Take your ignorance elsewhere please.

-Gespenst-  +   858d ago
Heavy Rain just think's it's really intelligent. "Let's put some emotional music over this part so people think what's happening in the scene is seriously and subtly done."

The plot is juvenile and a mess- origami killers and special FBI VR sunglasses, and loads of obligatory stuff like pointless dream sequences and effin choreographed hand to hand combat sequences. It's a damn silly game, but it takes itself so seriously.

And god, the voice acting and facial animation is a mess too.

And who cares about branching storylines if all of them feel like they were written by a 15 year old?

L.A. Noire is a mature game, well written and acted, and the facial animation allows for a hell of a lot of subtlety and character complexity. It has a much more realized world, a totally superior soundtrack and the gameplay is so much more enjoyable. It doesn't forget it's a game.
WeAreLegion  +   858d ago
I didn't want to reply...but you said LA Noire has a superior soundtrack. That's when I realized you were trolling. You had me going for awhile though. :) Good job.
BABY-JEDI  +   857d ago
Totally agree, some kiddies don't realise that Heavy Rain opened a door to adult gaming with adult themes.. It's not a perfect game, but its early days (in gaming context) . Also, I'm sure this gaming type will develop in time to be something really special & worthy of all gamers attention
N0S3LFESTEEM  +   858d ago
Jurassic Park did Heavy Rains gameplay better... The stripper scene was ripped off of True Lies. I laughed my ass off when you had to cut your own finger off... I would build it up then pussy out, build it up then pussy out, over and over again XD. Dinosaurs always win.
MysticStrummer  +   857d ago
"L.A. Noire is the game Quantic Dream wish they could make, let's get real."

Damn I hope not. I had to force myself to finish LA Noire's story and got rid of it as soon as I did. I played through Heavy Rain several times and still have it. LA Noire's face tech was very cool, I'll give it that, but the game got old fast.
BABY-JEDI  +   857d ago
Yes, I really enjoyed the bad character animations in this game to the point of not completing LA noir. This game had soo much promise. They should have watched more old BW pulp gangster movies with James Cagney & big Humphrey LoL

Not saying its not good because the animation is spectacular, just the acting is obvious cut and pasted.
And the hair part gives away 2D vertices.

"FOX Engine Generated Joakim Mogren Would Crush Quantic Dream's PS4 Tech Demo"

Only... Mogren couldn't possibly be rendered with the fox engine, let alone in real time lol.

He moves, looks and sounds real.
Come on his skin, sweat, eyes, veins, muscle tendons, teet, tounge, spit, hair, pores, chest, neck, bandages, nose, smile wrinkles/holes fingers, T shirt, ipad and MOBY DICK background look all real.

It boggles my mind that some people think he is generated by the fox engine, the interview is definitively real.

Only idiots would think it's CG, do people think that next gen is going to be a massive magical leap ? Kojima would not spend time and money to create a realistic model like this for the purpose of marketing even if he could which he cannot.

As good as he or any on the top devs are there simply isn't the processing power to create this kind of realistic detail yet, paying an actor is a lot cheaper and makes more sense.

This CG BS seems to me like a PR stunt that has sadly worked on a few fools.
