Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal.

The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.

Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted.

If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.

Representative Couch says he filed the bill in hopes of cutting down on online bullying.

Kellie Wilson reports for Action News 36. The full story contains a video clip.

The story is too old to be commented.

this isnt big brother. This is because of idiots out there posting negative / threating comments against one another. This isnt a tracking method. Specifically since there are already services that track hits to IP addresses and follow the IP address to the registered user.

Oo
Does he think that websites have the ability to identify their users that well? Verifying users is expensive and requires some sort of offline verification process - even if such a law passed it would not be enforceable to any degree

And what about of out of country bulletin boards - how would the US moderate them?

He is completely out of his mind and should go back to reading his books beside the fire under candle light because obviously that is the era he is looking at this from.

This would cause problems much worse than bullying, with kids posting their real names and information, its just making it easier to be a sexual predator. So in addition to costs as JoelR said, you could potential be trading off bullying for things like sexual predation, stalkers, etc.

Its a terrible idea and another reason why old men out of touch with todays society and reality should not have this type of power/influence.

God help "the mart", nasim, the general and jin kazama if that bill goes into effect..... LOL

I could careless about "big brother" on an issue like this. If you aren’t doing anything to be ashamed of them why do you need anonymity? It’s not like we are talking about medical records here, we are talking about web post that most people wouldn’t even think about making if there name was attached to it. I am sick of having to spoon feed the weaker half of society and cater to those who don’t care enough about self pride to ever do the right thing. If you are going to be hateful and don’t have the balls to do it unless you have anonymity than I have zero sympathy for you. It’s way past time to bring personal accountability to the net imho. As for the kiddy stalker comment above I don’t see how this would change a thing. The simple reality is that if someone wants to hurt kids they are going to find a way regardless of how many checks and balances you put in place. Kiddy stalkers existed long before the net and they will exist long after it’s gone. I can think of not one positive reason as to why you NEED anonymity, yet I can think of about 10 dozen negative reasons why people want anonymity on the web. Anonymity works real well for stalkers, con artist and all sorts of other predators. If you are to ashamed to have people know what your real opinions and thoughts are in life maybe you should rethink your life.

are two ways to look at this. the first is yes this would deter the spineless people who post negative things online. which i for one would agree. but i dont wanna put my details online, the internet is not a safe place anyone can build a site and tell you its safe even some top companies that have got super high security software still get hacked. in a way its a good idea but come on we all humans you can bet someone will abuse this system for evil deeds.
