Steam introduces “Early Access”

Steam has launched a new programmed called “Early Access”, where Steam community involved games are available to play while in Beta. You can either play a free game, or purchase one with money. This is not the same as a pre purchase, with Early Access when you buy the game you get full access to it in its current playable state. Discretion is encouraged on purchasing a game that is in Beta. (Dev, Industry, PC, Steam)

I completely disagree. This is simply in line with Kickstarter, Minecraft's sales model, and paid access to closed beta. Early access games as long as its spoken up front that you are helping support an indie or small developer and the game is currently unfinished is not deceptive. After all, you are getting the full game upon full release when buying an early access game. Not everyone has a multi million dollar publisher paying their bill.

You do realize you KEEP the game once it's finished too right?

This is mildly kickstarter-ish. I don't like the idea of paying for a demo though. Slippery slope

The prices, from what i've checked, are comparable to a pre order at gamestop. 5 dollars at gamestop will get you a reserved copy, 6-8 dollars will reserve your copy all the way up until release and that will be the price of the game.

It's really a matter of funding semi indie projects and giving data back to the devs, imo.

To the people complaining about this already, you're completely missing the point of this. You're not paying for a demo, you're pre-purchasing the game to get it at its current state of development.

What you're doing by purchasing an Early Access game is supporting the developers who likely don't have much in the way of outside funding; giving them direct feedback in order to make the game better; plus you get to play the game early.
