Review: God of War: Ascension has issues but still manages to entertain - Canada.com

God of War: Ascension is an interesting beast.

On one hand, it's graphically impressive and an extremely polished video game. But, on the other hand, it’s a frustrating mess that’s full of the same issues that have plagued the franchise since its creation. (God of War: Ascension, PS3) -

GOW is one of the few games where extremely violence makes sense.

Issues like no auto-aim and no one-hit shank kills.

"it’s a frustrating mess that’s full of the same issues that have plagued the franchise since its creation. In some ways, these issues are even more apparent in this iteration, especially when it comes to the game’s annoying knack for over the top combat animations."

Excuse me? "Over the top combat animations" WTF is that even supposed to mean? Do they mean excessive violence? The game is rated M, 18. Considering that there is absolutely no reason to mark it down for violence.

"Enemy attacks are just far too difficult to dodge, counter or block because of how Ascension’s combat system is designed. Once an enemy starts a combat animation, you’re pretty much in for a beating regardless of what you do. Occasionally countering or dodging with the right joystick will get you out of harms way, but only rarely and this requires precise timing."

ROFLMAO!! I could literally dodge circles around the enemies using the right sticks and while parrying was a bit difficult in the start, I got used to it and successfully parried a lot by my second playthough, which was on hard BTW. The writer just plain sucks at this game.

After the first thing I quoted he goes on to say this:
"What I’ve always found interesting about the God of War series is that its ridiculous and often disgusting violence actually fits into the game’s universe. Because it has a cartoon-like comic book feel to it, the violence never seems as visceral or real as it does in other hyper violent video games. Sometimes it pushes the envelope a little too far and the gore becomes border line disgusting."

I'm not sure if I understood what he meant in the first paragraph I quoted. But either way, he is either not making sense or being inconsistent, flip flopping whether the violence is a good thing or not. And it is good, because it's an integral part of this franchise.

"Occasionally, during extended boss battles, I felt like there should probably be more check points. I’m not the kind of gamer who enjoys repeating parts of a video game multiple times and that happened to me quite frequently."

Again, he sucks. I've completed the game on Hard and I never died in the same battle more than 5 times before managing to scrape forward with the skin of my teeth.

"In the end, Ascension is an enjoyable game and I had a significant amount of fun with it. There is something inherently satisfying about a slashing your foes too pieces by linking combos and special moves together. It’s just a shame that a few annoying features, issues that have plagued the God of War series for years, are still present in the game"

Apart from bitching from violence (and then saying it's interesting, and then bitching from it again) and his lack of skill in this game he failed to mention any issues at all.
