Talking Point: Wii U eShop Discounts Show It's a Vibrant Marketplace, Not a Monopoly

This week it was confirmed that a sale on Ubisoft's retail Wii U downloads, which arrived in North America in mid-February, will hit Europe this week. It's the latest small landmark in what's become a regular series of subtle evolutions in Nintendo's download platform strategies, and one that strongly demonstrates the company willingly loosening its grip of control over the platforms. (3DS, Nintendo, Nintendo DS, Wii, Wii U)

I got Little Inferno for 50% off just last week and I still plan to download Tekken Tag 2. The library needs some expansion and a little more organization, but otherwise it's a nicely made shop. Much better than the Wii Shop Channel.

Only one problem. No gifting. That's one feature I wish they would have kept from the previous shop. I guess I should have expected it when the 3DS did not have that either.

God the wii shopping channel was a complete mess, and I love the eShop, and I should of waited to get mighty switch force hd edition, since its like 4.99 now, and avoid buying it full price.

cant wait for the summer update. Mario 64 and Majora's mask in HD will make me curl into fetus position.

What are you talking about?

Yeah, Mario 64 and Majora's Mask HD is news to me. Do you know something we don't?

I think he is referring to the Virtual Console update in the summer.

@diddybeats: but... even if those games appeared in the Wii U's eShop as Virtual Console games, they wouldn't be HD.

:/

I agree that the eshop on Wii U and 3DS have made vast improvements. Seems like Nintendo is getting rid of their draconian policies and it's paying dividends. Right now the 3DS eshop is my second favorite online game delivery service behind only Steam.

My only issue with the e shop is that there simply arent enough games for purchase! We need VC titles ASAP. Cant wait to play some classics on the gamepad! Also, I am convinced Nintendo has learned their lessons on the digital front just by hearing all the support indie devs are throwing toward the U.

Plus, I think I have seen more sales in the first few months of the e shop than ever witnessed on wii shop. Was there ever a sale on the wii shop channel at all? i cant recall one. Regardless, it is obvious Nintendo is opening their eyes. Now if we can just get them to release a digital version of Earthbound, all will be right in the world.
