How the Thief Reboot Could Nab New Fans

Gi - Despite recently acquiring Thief Gold on Steam, I’ve never yet played any of the Thief games. But I immensely enjoyed Dishonored (see my earlier piece on why it was such a revelation to this stealth-averse player), a game that pays significant homage to the innovative qualities of its predecessor that pushed Thief into cult-series status. The franchise is now set for a 2014 cross-gen reboot – bringing steampunk protagonist Garrett’s thieving to a new generation.

By losing old ones (like that game that recently came out & has "Tomb Raider" slapped on the box).

Why try to get new fans when you already have a loyal fanbase....if someone new to the franchise likes the look of the game they'll buy it, it's down to marketing at the end of the day.

Nearly every old IP which has came out this gen has ended up being crap, dumbed down OR good but basically could be a new IP it's that different.

Max Payne, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Spilnter Cell, Final Fantasy, Hitman, Duke Nukem...and so on

I'm really scared that Thief is going to go down the same path.

Because the amount of money needed to make a game with the amount of polish to be taken seriously costs a lot more nowadays than it did when the original versions of these games came out.

As long as we keep this current climate where your game is either an indie title or a AAA title with little to no middle ground developers will need to try and get new players interested to make any kind of profit at all.

Is it really a reboot though? Thought it was still a sequel?

By adding a new cover system, guns, multi-player and kill-streaks ofc!

I'm not the biggest Thief fan, but I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it to need a reboot.
