IGN: Gears of War: Judgment Review

Youth, of all things, is the greatest influence on Gears of War: Judgment. The story hinges on disrespecting authority. Angst dictates character behavior. Aggression and agility uproot the fundamentals of combat design. Most significantly, Gears of War: Judgment is rebellious. Both the campaign and multiplayer reject what previously worked for the series in favor of bold new ideas. The numerous risks pay dividends. Gears of War 3 appeared to exhaust what third-person, cover-based shooters do best. Judgment makes Gears of War feel young again.

The story is too old to be commented.

That is a high score, need to see more reviews to Narrow it down and really be marked as a good Gears of War game.

MrBT1362d ago

Dave is a real Gears head and I'd go with his score any day of the week

http://n4g.com/news/1212051...

I'm happy enough that Overrun is awesome - I do love that game mode!

WrAiTh Sp3cTr31362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

"Halfway through, I realized this is the best third-person shooter around."

For the most part, Gears has always been.

This one is the icing on the cake for me...

http://www.destructoid.com/...

I especially love this part...

"Gears of War 3 was still a great little game, but represented the kind of step down indicative of a series that's running out of steam. Gears of War: Judgment puts paid to that impression, proving there's plenty of vitality in Epic's flagship yet; provided it's willing to try some new spins on its established formula. OverRun alone is worthy of praise, but there's just so much stuff going on in this package, there's something for all followers of the series. A few of Judgment's experiments may not be as fondly received as others, but overall it's hard to complain about a game that tries so much, and succeeds in almost all its endeavors.

This is Gears of War back, unquestionably, on the winning path."

Can't wait till Tuesday.

But it's going to be hard to jump into the campaign until I finish God of War.

Looks like both GoW games "bombed", or rather got lower scores than expected since 80% is not a bad score at all.

Funnily enough, both are prequels, the 4th console games in their respective franchises, and are also not numbered. Oh yeah, their scores are also very similar, and the first 3 games of their series have also similar scores.

I say if you're a fan of Gears you will like it regardless of Metacritic. IGN seems to have given it the best review so far and it does look good. Their video review of the game looks really fun especially overrun.

SDF Repellent1362d ago

doesn't matter. There are only a few sites that I trust for reviews anyways. IGN = 9.2 , Destructoid = 9, Eurogamer = 8, and waiting on Gamespot.

Can't wait for tomorrow.

bryam19821362d ago

ign bitching about god of war not bringing nothing new to the series and they give gearsOW a 9????

Sony3601362d ago

All of the reviews from people worth listening to are giving it a 9+ out of ten, good enough for me.

Nvm.

Mr-SellJack1362d ago

this game is overrated...if GOW A was reviewed by any of the ps people they would have atleast given it a 9 which it deserved

ginsunuva1362d ago

reviews =/= shit

Why do people throw all their trust in reviews 100%?
How old are the people on this site? Below 18?

joab7771362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

What i have gathered from all reviews so far is that its about an 8-8.5. It has better, quicker combat with better, less strategic and more reactionary combat situations b/c of the spawn system. It wasted a great opportunity to see into the origin of the locust horde and its frightening destruction of a homeworld and its people. Instead, it created a fractured story to suit replayability and modifiers.

It looks the best of all of them and gone r the days of clausterphopic grey corridors. The boss fight, again, is a let down. the aftermath is cool but is a good indicator of differences. The campaign is more of an arcade type like bulletstorm using wave techniques and defense gimmicks.

Multiplayer did the unthinkable and released without a horde mode so overrun, which everyone wanted after gears 3 is the very good replacement. Survival was just tacked on. Competitive doesnt come with all the modes but its quicker and many will be angry with how they changed classic button mapping. Thats about it. I guess this guy is a huge Gears fan and whoever reviewed God of War wasnt.

jetlian1362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

you mad?! survival mode is like horde.Boss fights are better than any other tps on the market. I dare you to mention UC bosses lol

they added some modes and took others away. F4A and DOM wasnt in older gears games.

monkey nuts1362d ago

"IBoss fights are better than any other tps on the market. I dare you to mention UC bosses lol"

In my opinion metal gear solid 4 has some of the best boss fights in the TPS genre. . . . . . . . . . . . . .... .

Another solid entry into a blockbuster franchise

TekoIie1362d ago

I'm amazed at the disagrees. I've been playing the early access demo for 4 days now and can say this is a perfect example of how a franchise can actually change while staying true to the originals.

Also the Epic forums have done a 180 on this. Lots of negativity there before the demo and now people love it.

pompombrum1362d ago

So does it still feel like a gears of war game and the changes make it feel better? Honestly everything I've heard about this game makes it sound like an insult to what made the gears games awesome.

Oh_Yeah1362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

Gears hasn't changed.. Cmon now. Judgement is very much the same.

TekoIie1362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

@aiBreeze

Here are the noticable changes which are all really good:

Chainsaw takes 0.5 seconds longer to rev but can now melee
Chainsaw vacuum is slightly smaller
Melee is MUCH weaker than before (4 hits to kill)
New control layout is easily better
Faster weapon swap
New loadout system makes the game faster
Overrun is awesome!
New weapons all have a place in the game (e.g Markza and Breechshot)
Mantling is faster now
No stopping power
New grenades increase the amount teamwork
SOS redesign is much more enjoyable to go against
Maps are much more "compact" compared to previous Gears

Only negative I can find is only going to be in Overrun which is the Engineers sentry. That thing destroy everything it sees.

@Disagree's

Prove me wrong ;P

@Oh_Yeah

Again, prove me wrong ;P

Console exclusive articles = console fantards bombing people with agrees/disagrees.

The site should just remove them.

TXIDarkAvenger1362d ago

The Sony fanboys are mad that this game got better scores that God of War. ROFL. This site never ceases to make me laugh at Sony fanboys.

Ezz20131362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

@AnimeAvenger @LessThan2Tflops

lol you guys are amazing
gears J 79% metacritc
GOWA 80% metascore

gears is amazing with 79% meta....but GOWA with 80% metascore is lame and sucks...right ?!

this site double standers is just out of this world

Looking damn good, looking forward to spend countless hours in Overrun

Cocozero1362d ago

Higher than expected, i though it would be getting below 8 like other recent prequels.

HammadTheBeast1362d ago

Same metacritic score. Boom.

ame221362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

It's funny that GOW:A and GeoW:J both exclusives, launched neck on neck and both have 80 metacritic scores. Something is off.

Edit: Both prequels.

clintagious6501362d ago

Both great series. Great review for gears.

OhMyGandhi1362d ago (Edited 1362d ago )

Conspiracy. The truth is out there.
