Divnich: Now it's Microsoft's turn

Jesse Divnich, analyst for The simExchange, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the forthcoming price cut for the Xbox 360 is a necessary reaction to Sony's Blu-ray victory.

"I've always considered the console wars to be like a game of chess and Sony's recent Blu-ray victory is equivalent to putting Microsoft in 'check'," he said. "This is why we are talking about an Xbox 360 price cut and not a PlayStation 3 price cut - Sony already made their move, it's now Microsoft's turn."

But while a price-cut might have a positive short-term impact on Xbox 360 sales, Divnich believes that it is within Sony's power to undermine such a move with a price cut of its own later in the year.

"That is where the Xbox 360 can differentiate itself since the PS3's PlayStation Network will never be able to compete against the level of service that Xbox Live can provide."

thats why I pay 50$ yearly subscription for my xbox live

$ony needs to react quickly, If they want to win in this Generation

i agree that they will have to cut the price sometime this year, but not anytime soon.

this guy said it himself, "I've always considered the console wars to be like a game of chess and Sony's recent Blu-ray victory is equivalent to putting Microsoft in 'check'," he said. "This is why we are talking about an Xbox 360 price cut and not a PlayStation 3 price cut - Sony already made their move, it's now Microsoft's turn."

MS is reacting to Sony while Sony is reaping its blu-ray gamble. MS isn't putting Sony in check, they just found some wiggle room and got themselves out of check. (in this guys words)

and when Sony drops their price later this year, maybe late summer or christmas time, this drop will seem all for nothing.

btw, i didn't hit disagree......even though i do

pretty much shows everybody is a fanboy in one way or another.

This price drop is a part of their business strategy. They dropped the price right before madden was released and now they are doing the same before GTA4 is released. They want to put separation between their system and the ps3 when these massively selling games come out so that people chose the 360 as their console to play these multi platform games. You get to play your favorite game and saving money.

And as for Sony it is not about how many 360's are selling it is about how many PS3's are selling. They have a certain number they want to reach each month and as long as they are achieving that goal they are fine with the price. They had to do the price cuts not because MS was outselling them, but because they were not selling enough. They have enough confidence in the PS3 that it will win this generation they are not in a hurry. They just have to make sure that the PS3 is on schedule.

Sony don't need to do anything, the PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide even with the higher price.

The question is, will this cut be enough to limit the damage?

The answer is "no" because Europe doesn't care about the 360.

LMAO Mr Playboy you are delusional. Xbox 360 doesn't stand a chance and PSN is getting EVERYTHING Xbox Live does FOR FREE, in the next 2-3 months. YES EVERYTHING. Acheivements, dedicated servers, in game everything, digital downloads, Blu Ray has won and that will be HUGE for the next decade and more, and then Playstation Home which is bigger and better than ANYTHING on Xbox Live. PERIOD. Thats why Sony made it LMAO.

And even if they weren't doing all that to PSN (there is more also like how they are even remodeling the interface and look of the Playstation Store) they would still win they way it is now because its not even that different. PS3 has the biggest games coming. Everyone knows it. Playstation is bigger than Xbox. WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY BIGGER and everyone knows it. PS3 will be out 4-5 years after Xbox 360 and everyone knows it and its already winning in sales and is still a 400-500$ console LMAO. PS3 HAS BARELY BEGUN.

Xbox 360 won't sale 50 million this generation. Like Sony said 2/3 days ago:

Flopbox 3fixme = Orignal Flopbox

"connectivity" with a marketplace

PirateThom3545d ago

And that's what Microsoft have failed to do outside of the US.

LastDance3545d ago

alas. i wish it were about good games.

DarkSniper3545d ago

At it's current price, PLAYSTATION® 3 is already a bang for your buck. With Sony's price cut now imminent, the general market will be able to purchase the award winning system at a bargain price considering the superior hardware and gadgetry found inside the platform.

Microsoft's role in the console industry is considered to be "reactive". What Dark Sniper means by this is that they will wait to see what Sony does as far as marketing and advancement is concerned. Being in a reactive state is not the identity of a console leader and Microsoft definately does not have the intangibles in place to be considered leaders.

You are so full of crap. Anyone can state the obivious man. Of course a price cut is imminent. A price cut on the 360 in the US is imminent. Easy to say, hell yeah. Don't just start throwing out whiny rebuttals because Phony isn't cutting it. And sorry to say, but if anyone is being reactive, it's your Phony boys. How long after the POS2 was released did it take to get a price drop? Yeah...exactly. A LOT longer than what it took them with the POS3. Phony had to drop or die, hence....reacted! It's business man and reaction is second nature. When you grow up, you will understand that.
