The PS3: The Casual Gamer's Console of Choice?

For the past year, the console wars have raged on, and so far, one clear choice has emerged as the casual gamer's console of choice: the Nintendo Wii. Casuals have flocked to the friendly line-up of easy-to-play minigame compilations and non-traditional games, leaving the PS3 and Xbox 360 pretty much to more hardcore gamers.

But it's not the Wii that may end up being the casual console of choice. It may very well be the PS3.

Why? There are six strong reasons that could appeal to casual gamers:
1. Nintendo has lost total control over the Wii's developers.
2. Blu-ray.
3. Free online.
4. Comparable choices for casual gamers on PSN.
5. Home as more than a gimmick.
6. A strong 2008 line-up.

This is by far the strongest line up ever. Last year was amazing but this year has no rival except maybe a while back when FF and MGS all launched in the same year for the PS2.

I have little faith in TBD 2008 actually being in 2008 for every one of those games. In my experience any release date that doesn't have at least a month is just a way of telling people when you're going to announce that the game is getting delayed.

you don't believe these games will come out? Killzone 2 has been in production for four to five years, and besides Surfer girl, there is absolutely no indication it should be delayed any longer than it already has, considering the big priority sony has placed on it. LittleBigPlanet is really a simple game without major programming needed, so I'm assuming it'll release and there might be expansions or episodic content later if they didn't get it right the first time. Considering Insomniac has NEVER missed a deadline, and they say the Resistance 2 single player storyline is already done, and they already have 60 players running online, its reasonable to say it is coming out. Eight Days and Final Fantasy have never been confirmed for 2008. Motorstorm might not release this year, but it seems probable. Gran Turismo Prolouge, Haze, MGS, and Socom are all coming soon.

As for the others? Tekken 6 has already been in arcades in Japan for a while. Infamous, team-ico project, and a few others are toss-ups. Yakuza 3 will very likely come this year. White Knight Story is very likely to make it out, atleast in Japan. Heavy Rain/ God of War/ Resident Evil and a few other big ones are all slated for 2009.

Are you high? Mass Effect Bioshock and Gears of War were all reviewed far and away better than anything on the PS3 (perhaps excepting Uncharted, which probably would have done a lot better if it were released sooner).

Mass Effect is coming to PS3. Gears of War is a new I.P. but it caters to same Halo hardcore gamer fan. Bioshock is new I.P. but it caters to the same fan as well. The 360 doesn't expand to the casual audience. Crackdown is an example of a game that expands the audience.

Yeah, I'm not sure where that's coming from either. Heavenly Sword is one of the best action games I've ever played. Great characters, good diverse gameplay, entertaining cut scenes, good use of the SIXAXIS, good graphics. This was one game that helped sell me on the PS3. It's not perfect - but it's highly ranked in my book.

... I still find myself playing games (online in particular) on my 360 far more. Mind you, Ratchet and Clank and UT3 are awsome, BUT ... my 360 still gets most of the GAME action.

PS3 online being free is great, BUT, I will not BS ... XBL is a much better online service/experience with better communication features.

At least now with HD-DVD being DEAD I feel better buying Blu-ray movies and watching them on my PS3. Perhaps once LBP and KZ2 come along (and Crisis if PS3 exclusive) the tide will turn.

See, I find myself playing my PS3 FAR more online. The only game that I play online is Halo (though I don't have Gears yet). From what I've experienced the only plus to the 360's online is in-game XMB and better 'online friend' system. I say 'online friend' because I have never met anyone and have only played w/ most of them one time.

I think what it probably comes down to is which system you bought COD4 on. I bought it on my PS3 and if I had bought it on the 360 my 360 would be getting more online play.

I have been gaming for a long time. Im one of those kids who bought a PSX back in the days and stuck by it ever since. I have enjoyed tremendous amounts of classics on the PSX and PS2. Now I am grown up, I work most of my time.

PS3 deliver all my needs. The multi media device is literally made for people like me, who bought a PSX back in the days, and who now can only enjoy the greats in the weekends. I can enjoy HD movies on it, play some games, browse the Internet. And soon I will be able to do much more like watching streaming movies through HOME.

And let me tell you, I dont waste my time on crap games like Turok or Spiderman, or Ninja Gaiden or Mass effect. I reserve my precious time for the established greats only: MGS, FF, GT5. Occasionally some game catches my eye and I make time for it: White Knight Chronicles.

PS3 is made for people like me. People like me have enough money to get a PS3, HD TV and a big ass sofa. 360 is made for stinkin 15 years who were too lazy last summer to get a job and as a consequence cant get himself the more expensive PS3. Well tough fking luck , stinkin xbots. Its not like you were actually doing anything in the summer other than sitting on your lazy fking ass all day.

Oh yea, 2008 is definitely the best line up ever. Well the PS3 line up that is. In my many years of gaming, I have never witnessed so many top franchises being released in the same year. Xbots of course will claim differently. But they are fking lying. They also said how 2007 360 line up was "the best eva". I look at that generic piece of shiat they call titles and I almost throw up. Thats how sad their line up is, but they cant tell. They are so fking delusional, they are basically out of touch with reality.

I consider myself a serious gamer, however, I could care less about most FPS, which is why I have never been drawn to the XBOX. The games for the PS3 are well made, groundbreaking, beautiful, and extremely entertaining.

I am also a huge fan of movies and wait until you see what movies will become on blu ray. This Tuesday you can rent (I have it on order) NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN on blu ray. On a HD television this movie is going to really show off all that is possible when a studio and a great director(s) put the equipment to the test. Enjoy.

the wii isn't a entertainment system. sony has and will always be innovative. the wii is only attracting casual, not every kind of gamer. Sony does have that.

i think the wii fanbase will flock to the ps3 when they realize they want more hardcore gaming but at the same time have a library of casual games. xbox needs to concentrate less on the hardcore. but that's just my opinion on how i see the future to be.

you realise that the majority of people that bought the Wii, aren't gamers, at all. The Wii is huge becuase its cheap and it is so easy to use, you have to have exactly zero gaming experience to be able to play the Wii, which is part of why its so big. Why you would think Wii users would go to the PS3 is beyond me. If anything the people that play the Wii are just going to go to the cheapest "next gen console." And chance are that won't be the PS3.

I'm now only interested in Sony - or Microsoft - developing a better version of a wii-mote.

I want to play GeoW2, Haze, R2, KZ2, BF:BC, Farcry 2 with a PLAY-MOTE or X-MOTE with lightning fast targeting with motion control(just as fast a mouse).

The next gen games are there and coming. NOW we need the next gen controllers.

The Wii can have 1 to 1 controls. Ever played Trauma Center? Developers choose not to implement it because, surprisingly, it sometimes doesn't feel as intuitive as the controls that are implemented. Right now, it's going to take a lot to over-innovate the Wiimote, especially since finger tracking and head tracking are possible with it.

Yes, ( Home ) once set-up will be the reason why it's the casual gamers' choice.
Think it's not a gimmick, more looking like going to a virtual place ( it's nothing like a chat room at all ) to just hang-out, enjoy the sight/sites on offer if you'ved finished or are tired of playing games for awhile.

It will be a while until one of the next-gen consoles passes the consoles designed specifically for "casual gamers." Here's hoping PS3 can one day hold that title but for now it's the Wii.

causual gamers? lol, no offence but the biggest games on ps3 are of the hardcore variety. MGS and FF. KIllzone/ resistance. LBP is the only big casual game I see and people won't fork over 460$ to play it. right now wii is for causuals, ps3/360 for hardcore. Both 360 and ps3 have other casual games, but most casuals want a wii purely cause it isnt a PS# or xbox#.

Consider this too currently there is only 20% HDTV penetration in the U.S. so as HDTV's audience expands (predicted to be 35% by next year) then you will see a larger margin of HD consoles being sold. I don't know about anybody else here but I had to first scrap up 1700 bucks for my HDTV before I even considered which NexGen console (sorry wii is not nexgen) I wanted to buy, which is part of the reason that wii is winning this "war" bc 10 yr olds don't have HD tv's in their bedrooms.
