Why cross-platform gaming is Microsoft's secret weapon

PC World - Microsoft has taken major heat for its recent reinvention efforts, but amid public lambasting of Windows 8 and the Surface tablets, a critical new development has largely been ignored: The company has both the hardware and software to dominate the four most important gaming screens in your life.

The story is too old to be commented.

Well Sony looks to be doing it the right way with the PS4 so MS could probably just match what Sony will be doing. Cross Platform gaming is only good as it is integrated but it can't go to far as to take the fun out of it.

MikeMyers1657d ago

Sony makes operating systems for PC's?

Windows 8 is not doing very well so they have that going against them right now. Neither is the Surface tablet. You also have companies like Valve who have been very vocal about Windows 8. You also hear rumors of the next Xbox not playing used games and requiring an online connection.

There are a lot of variables at play right now. They could have one cohesive experience on various devices but if they charge for basic online count me out.

The_Infected1657d ago

No I'm saying PS4 games will work cross platform though.

DOMination-1656d ago (Edited 1656d ago )

I think gaikai will only stream older games. If it will stream ps4 games to a device i already own then

1. Sony will basically have no exclusives
2. No point in bothering buying a ps4

Sony aren't stupid enough to do that. They will have remote play to vita and a smartglass style app for ps4 though.

"The company has both the hardware and software to dominate the four most important gaming screens in your life."

LMAO, so funny!

When the SteamBox comes out I'm DONE with Microsoft as far as Gaming Goes. I prefer my PC Gaming MS free and that day is coming!

I don't game on phones or consoles and If I did I would still AVOID MS like the Plague.

Sony seems do be doing things right but MS is just copy, paste, charge a fee.

Roccetarius1656d ago (Edited 1656d ago )

But...you can already make your very own SteamBox. Silly goose.

Godmars2901657d ago

And yet you use Sony products for the thumbnail pic? Whatever.

(Oh, wait. Now I see what you did ;p )

TuxedoMoon1657d ago (Edited 1657d ago )

I would like to see more PC and console connectivity. I loved that feature in PSU on the ps2 (pc players can play with ps2 players).

BitbyDeath1657d ago (Edited 1657d ago )

Looks like the author hasn't done their research as Sony has already announced that PS4 games can be streamed to android and iPhones.

Minato-Namikaze1657d ago

They did? I don't remember that

"A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

So Sony... copied Microsoft's SmartGlass ?

ALLWRONG1657d ago

No kidding that's just Smartglass. Sorry Sony guys, but just like Trophies, Sony copied that.

miso_Jeff1657d ago (Edited 1657d ago )

so Sony copied smartglass?... you mean like how I can access my desktop using my iPhone? So I guess MS copied my iPhone? or that doesn't count because MS is known for innovating and never copying right?

PSeye... camera used to track a person's movement so that said movement would have an affect on the game. Kinect... a sensor that used to track a person's movement so that said movement would have an affect on the game. Same thing, just different "types" of tracking and the Kinect is better at tracking.

Should I continue? DualShock controller... Dual sticks, 360 has them... but in a different location... NOT THE SAME (fanboy stance). MS used dual sticks cause it's was the logical thing to do.

Guys, the truth is these companies will copy and modify what is popular. Every company does this! When they reveal the next xBox if it also allows you to "share" using a single button I bet people will be in a uproar over that as well. OMG MS copied, or you guys might not and just praise them. But the truth is (maybe) that MS had already leaned toward that idea and had is ready but Sony went frist... food for thought.

xursz1656d ago

This is ridiculous. You guys sound like you're desperate to say "Look Sony is copying! LOOK!!!"

I didn't know smartglass lets you remotely dl games as well as watch live streaming either, so no, it's not basically smart glass. It's a Playstation App.

BitbyDeath1656d ago (Edited 1656d ago )

"So Sony... copied Microsoft's SmartGlass ?"

So you're saying the 360 can do all this already? I've never heard of the 360 being able to second screen with a phone before?

Got any links of how the 360 can second screen with phones?

IK IR Y IP T1656d ago

@BitbyDeath actually u can second screen with a phone and even control your xbox with a phone i do it all the time u can make loadouts ur phone can be a map or it can be a gos for forza dont knock what u dont know ! Shhhhhh. It's funnier this way.

CommonSenseGamer1657d ago

Sony did not announce that games will be streamed to tablets but components of a game if a developer decides to support it.

BitbyDeath1657d ago (Edited 1657d ago )

Well yea, tablets don't have buttons to support the actual games themselves...

Vita does tho and will allow for PS4 games to be played.

miso_Jeff1657d ago

I'm guessing with Gaikai they could, but how would transition from a full fledged game using a controller to a touch screen? I would only see that working if your touch device had a controller accessory, but if that were the case then both MS and Sony would allow you to stream to any device.

Fatal-Aim1656d ago (Edited 1656d ago )

@CommonSenseGamer

Perhaps you need to rewatch their conference

"PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita), smartphones and tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

GaiKai is where these devices will support entire games such as PlayStation Mobile or backwards compatible titles from previous platforms. Hence the PS1 collection on their tablets.
