Why cross-platform gaming is Microsoft's secret weapon

PC World - Microsoft has taken major heat for its recent reinvention efforts, but amid public lambasting of Windows 8 and the Surface tablets, a critical new development has largely been ignored: The company has both the hardware and software to dominate the four most important gaming screens in your life.

And yet you use Sony products for the thumbnail pic? Whatever.

(Oh, wait. Now I see what you did ;p )

I would like to see more PC and console connectivity. I loved that feature in PSU on the ps2 (pc players can play with ps2 players).

Looks like the author hasn't done their research as Sony has already announced that PS4 games can be streamed to android and iPhones.

Minato-Namikaze1807d ago

They did? I don't remember that

"A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

So Sony... copied Microsoft's SmartGlass ?

ALLWRONG1807d ago

No kidding that's just Smartglass. Sorry Sony guys, but just like Trophies, Sony copied that.

miso_Jeff1807d ago (Edited 1807d ago )

so Sony copied smartglass?... you mean like how I can access my desktop using my iPhone? So I guess MS copied my iPhone? or that doesn't count because MS is known for innovating and never copying right?

PSeye... camera used to track a person's movement so that said movement would have an affect on the game. Kinect... a sensor that used to track a person's movement so that said movement would have an affect on the game. Same thing, just different "types" of tracking and the Kinect is better at tracking.

Should I continue? DualShock controller... Dual sticks, 360 has them... but in a different location... NOT THE SAME (fanboy stance). MS used dual sticks cause it's was the logical thing to do.

Guys, the truth is these companies will copy and modify what is popular. Every company does this! When they reveal the next xBox if it also allows you to "share" using a single button I bet people will be in a uproar over that as well. OMG MS copied, or you guys might not and just praise them. But the truth is (maybe) that MS had already leaned toward that idea and had is ready but Sony went frist... food for thought.

xursz1807d ago

This is ridiculous. You guys sound like you're desperate to say "Look Sony is copying! LOOK!!!"

I didn't know smartglass lets you remotely dl games as well as watch live streaming either, so no, it's not basically smart glass. It's a Playstation App.

BitbyDeath1807d ago (Edited 1807d ago )

"So Sony... copied Microsoft's SmartGlass ?"

So you're saying the 360 can do all this already? I've never heard of the 360 being able to second screen with a phone before?

Got any links of how the 360 can second screen with phones?

IK IR Y IP T1807d ago

@BitbyDeath actually u can second screen with a phone and even control your xbox with a phone i do it all the time u can make loadouts ur phone can be a map or it can be a gos for forza dont knock what u dont know ! Shhhhhh. It's funnier this way.

CommonSenseGamer1807d ago

Sony did not announce that games will be streamed to tablets but components of a game if a developer decides to support it.

BitbyDeath1807d ago (Edited 1807d ago )

Well yea, tablets don't have buttons to support the actual games themselves...

Vita does tho and will allow for PS4 games to be played.

miso_Jeff1807d ago

I'm guessing with Gaikai they could, but how would transition from a full fledged game using a controller to a touch screen? I would only see that working if your touch device had a controller accessory, but if that were the case then both MS and Sony would allow you to stream to any device.

@CommonSenseGamer

Perhaps you need to rewatch their conference

"PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita), smartphones and tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

GaiKai is where these devices will support entire games such as PlayStation Mobile or backwards compatible titles from previous platforms. Hence the PS1 collection on their tablets.
