Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch review [SideQuesting]

Cory Rolon of SideQuesting.com writes:

"Clocking in at around 50 hours, Ni no Kuni seems to succeed at very little. The plot is poorly paced with even the titular White Witch seeming like little more than an afterthought. The game coddles you throughout its entirety, the writing misses more than it hits, and the battle system is simply no fun." (Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, PS3) 3/5

Glad to see I'm not the only one who felt this way about the game. I do think the battle system can be fun, but I think it could have been implemented better. For example, it would have been nice to be able to hit a button to defend the character you're controlling (not just the "defend all" option), rather than having to try to quickly scroll and select.

I'd give it a 4/5.

This game was developed by Level-5 and as such it will take a very critical analysis to prove to me it's not "good".

This blog article did not convince me.

those who do not truly appreciate jrpgs probably won't appreciate the greatness and charm of ni no kuni.

Those who over hype this game only spoil it for themselves. Being too much of a fan can kill a game too. This game is all types of old school and maybe the reviewer has gone past that.

I liked the game and style BECAUSE it was very old school and traditional. I think the last game I played that was like this was Golden Sun DS.

I am not a serious JRPG fan yet I REALLY liked this game. Is there something wrong with me, then?

Makes two of us. I guess we're not pretentious enough to join that club. Yay for good games!

Maybe you are but don't know it yet. Hopefully this game opened you up for other titles in the genre. Not all jrpgs are the same. One fan may like action jrpgs like Tales (vetry similar to this), another may only like big open world jrpgs like FF12 and Xenoblade, another likes jrpgs with social elements like Persona 3/4, others like hardcore dungeon crawlers like SMT, while another likes turn based games like Lost Odyssey and FFX. I am a fan of all of them myself but maybe this was just a one off for you, who knows? Don't let the jrpg tag fool you though, the genre is as diverse as any other. It's like comparing Metroid Prime to COD or Gears because they're all shooters.

Glad you enjoyed this though. It's a lovely game.

As a JRPG fan this game is amazing

You know what I find truly amazing, even the people who are critics of this game still actually puts it in a good light. This is the 3rd supposedly negative review about the game that I have read but the writers still found charm in it.

I mean this reviewer is not a big fan of Studio Ghibli but he admits to be smitten by their work through the game and even though he felt the battle system was broken. He came back time and time again because he wanted to.

If you can make even your critics play the game and not hate it. Then you know you did something very right in the end.

I agree. The game is nice looking and all; but the gameplay is rather bland and boring. I put it down after like 15 hours or so. Maybe I'll get back to it (though I really doubt it).
