rawDLC For Your Ears Only: Do politics belong in gaming? – with Mark Ankucic

On this agenda ridden episode of For Your Ears Only Josh and Dave grab running mate Mark Ankucic from Dusty Cartridge to discuss if political statements have a place in gaming, the effects it has and whether gaming is the right kind of medium for this sort of subject matter.

The story is too old to be commented.

Well it has become a tendency to blame video games for everything. I've seen people blaming video games for making kids obese, but yeah it totally doesn't have anything to do with the fact that their parents feed them with loads of junk food 24/7.

I've seen people blaming video games for making kids go into schools and shoot everybody but yeah that must be it probably doesn't have anything to do with the horrible anti-bullying schools policies, the lack of communication of parents with their childrens and having guns and even worst in a place where the kids can find them.

Video games have been here for about 41 years but it turns that just now they're the root of every single problem, oh please you take us as fools of what?

And don't blame the parenting, after all its ok to buy your 11yr. old Call of Duty and let him play it online cursing at all the people hes playing with. Dont blame the parents, blame the Games......It make me sick when parents let their kids do this, and don't take responsibility.

Doesnt matter that you let your "children" watch the most recent "R" rated movie with heads being chopped off, and guts being spilled, its because of video games!

Ive been playing games for over 25 yrs. and have no history of violence at all, my kids have been playing for 10 yrs. and neither do they, I take the responsible roll as a parent and PAY ATTENTION to what they are playing.

Once the game industry starts putting millions of dollars into the monkeys in office wallets, they will shut up. Look at Hollywood. A big studio wants anything, it gets done within a week. They want a pirate site shut down, the government does it illegally, and starts suing like mad. They want laws restricting peoples rights to their products, they get them.

Meanwhile the game industry is sitting there doing their own thing, and the monkeys attack them at every turn. Why did the kid run down the street naked with a squirt gun yelling "die indians!!!"? well it was because he just played Sonic of course.....

Politics makes its way into everything else; they're used both as a vessel to carry a particular message- i.e. propaganda- or used to explore the ideas behind it. Be it books, movies, or anything else, all aspects of life make their way into these mediums in various forms.

Why are questions like these still being asked of games, as if games aren't capable of handling the issues mentioned? Are videos games somehow not as valid as an entertainment medium and mode of expression? If they are, and I can't imagine how they could not be, then it should be a foregone conclusion that video games can, will, and should discuss all the same themes as any other medium.
