Proof That American Gamers Really Do Want Japanese RPGs

Kotaku - Does the world still care about Japanese role-playing games? Do people still want to buy them? Do they still deserve our attention?

Ask your average gamer—or your average game developer—and they'll tell you that the JRPG is a dying genre. They'll tell you that Japanese RPGs haven't evolved, or that nobody buys them anymore. That JRPGs are too niche to bring to America. That the style isn't worth anyone's time.

It's the shooter fans that are always laughing about how boring turn-based RPGs are. They think their opinion = everyone's opinion.

The world NEEDS more turn-based!

adorie1237d ago

I agree, but I also want turn-based RPG battle system to evolve. I want to say SquareEnix has the right stuff to evolve the genre, but I will hold steadfast.

Donnieboi1236d ago

I want ALL kinds of jrpg's, even the non turn based ones. It's not as simple as turn based jrpgs vs western shooters. There are so many shades of jrpgs. Japanese games have a certain level of quality that western games dont have.

Shooters are just a phase. Eventually it wont be as popular as before. How many shooters can a person play? Geez..

If not that, shooters will evolve.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is still the best non-turn based RPG i've played.
Not sure why SE did not continue with that...

I'm pretty sure NIS America and Atlus have cornered that part of the market. All you really need to do is demand over and over which game you want, and then wait for it to come out.

Wait, a console style, RPG sold best on PC? Wow.

Magnus1237d ago

I'm still waiting for my favorite JRPG fanchise to come back to the PS3 and thats the Wild Arms franchise.

Hicken1237d ago

I'm waiting on Breath of Fire, but Wild Arms would be welcome as well. Just downloaded the first one for my Vita. Gonna see what it's all about.

There are easily about a dozen JRPGs I'd like to see make their way west. Probably won't, though, which is sad.
