The Eight Most Promising Non-Sequels of 2008

2008 may end up being the year of the sequel. Just listen to this lineup of high-profile follow-ups: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV, Ninja Gaiden 2, StarCraft 2, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 5, Mario Kart Wii, Guitar Hero 4, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, and Call of Duty 5. Hopefully these games warrant their existence, and Gamepro are confident many will.

But what about new games, the ones that lead not just follow? Marketing types call them "original IPs;" Gamepro call them risk-takers. So in an effort to applaud their individuality, they profile the most promising ones for the rest of the year, based on first-impressions, breakout potential, and pedigree. A handful of titles are based on existing themes and ideas, but their creative spirit should not be overlooked.

Nice to see props going to LBP, killer new IP!

Man, I can't wait. PS3 gamers are in for a revolution come September. They saved the best for last in this feature. Your eyes pop with "wow" once you get to it. I have shown this to all ages of family members/friends and genders and they are wow'ed everytime.

I think it has redefined what 'interactive' means.

Good to see it a ps3 non pc only title on that list.

Tempist3575d ago

Nice list they've put up. Good to know not everything is being a sequel.

WTF!? Brutal Legend only among honorables? Its THE non-sequel game of 2008. Sorry LBP but Schafer is god.

My list:
1.Brutal Legend
2.Prototype
3.LBP
4.Spore
5.Dead Space

I'd add Alan Wake but it seems that AW is a 2009 game.

Shankle3575d ago

Putting LBP behind prototype makes me cry.

skynidas3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

I respect your opinion but i think that it would be better this way

1.LBP
2.Brutal Legend (I love schafer's games too, Psychonauts anyone??)
3.Prototype
4.Spore
5.Dead Space

I know what you mean and LBP WILL rock but:

Brutal Legend is a bloody (Plus in my book) metal based (Another Plus in my book) game made by Tim Schafer (A Plus to rule them all). I'm with you skynidas. Psychonauts RULED.

As for Prototype, I know it won't be as great and innovative as LBP but it's an M rated game (Plus) in vein of Assassin's Creed (Plus). I love different and unique sandbox games like AC, Crackdown and such and Prototype seems like the next big step.

And seriously, how could I not use a gory M rated game as my top title ;)

For the record: 2008 has 2 kings: Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet.

lonestarmt3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

I agree brutal legend should be on there, but come on LBP will blow up the gaming scene. There is so much hype around it. Not saying Brutal legend won't rock, sell worse than it should, and be highly under looked by most players. LBP will not.

Also Prototype? man thats not really original. Its hulk ultimate destruction but M-rated.

Plus MK a game can be great without blood. I'm shocked you are rating one game over another one just based on gore and blood rather than how good it is. Normally your more rational than that. lol

eagle213575d ago

and I know how much you love Fallout 3 and..now..prototype. I love LittleBigPlanet so freakin' much, that if you can put prototype before it, then you must really love it. I will never argue with that. Fallout is not on my radar until I see something awesome from it. LBP had me at hello, and everytime I see it, it's like the first time. It even has boss battles for gamer's sake..lol

mr_potato3574d ago

Im sry i read your comments and your one of the less fanboy and most mature person here but why the hell do you put Alan Wake even on that list. Has the hole gaming community wached a secret interview or gameplay i missed cause i dont remember nothing but screenshots.

What is up with you all where is your sense of critic for hyping a game we have seen 0 gameplay.

MK_Red3574d ago

lonestarmt, LBP will indeed blow up the gaming scene and will become much bigger than Prototype but as eagle21 said, I really love Prototype and not just because of blood. I've seen all those games in action and Prototype hit me as something insanely fun and something that I'd like to play for hours, days and weeks. Sure, LBP is an endless game and it looks insanely fun but it's more of an multiplayer and social platformer game.
I personally don't like GTA much and hate likes of Saints Row and other Gangsta wanna be games. Even though Assassin's Creed is seriously flawed, I worship ot for one reason: It's a sandbox game unlike GTA and is a completely fun and exciting open world game that I enjoy. Same goes for Crackdown.
Plus, the GDC footage of Prototype simply blew me away. The chaotic scenes were uber awesome.

Blood definitly doesn't make a game better or worse. Heck, the whole reason Brutal Legend is my number one (The Plus to rule them all), is Tim Schafer's Psychonauts, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and other works. None of them are M rated or have blood. Psychonauts is a game I worship and consider one of the best games of all time and my fave PS2 game along with GOW and few others. It's a platformer without blood and gore.

But blood is a plus for me. I'm a movie gorehound and love violent and hard R movies. That's why I endlessly enjoy games like Postal 2 even though they are rather badly made games.
The combinatio of all those elements (Sandbox, gameplay, blood and such) is what makes it a huge fave for me.

Thanks eagle21. I respect yours. LBP is indeed the game that blows everyone's mind at first sight and I'm no exception. I love it but Prototype is indeed the game I love more.
Hopefully Fallout 3 shows some really good stuff soon :)

mr_potato, we have seen gameplay of Alan Wake. The most recent one was Intel's tech demo for quad core CPUs which used Alan Wake's playground and it was beyond mindblowing. Plus, aside from old gameplay vids, it's a game from Remedy, makers of the uber excellent Max Payne games.
