Tomb Raider Review (Digibytes)

Digibytes.me: "Video games have a lot of well-known characters, but while a lot are well-known, some do not have the legacy that Lara Croft has. She’s so popular that even non gamers know about her thanks to the movies. Unfortunately, the last few Tomb Raider games didn’t do Lara justice. Many series can benefit from a reboot and that’s all it took for Lara to reclaim her spot as the Queen of video games. The reboot of Tomb Raider got a TOTAL makeover and we should rejoice." (PC, PS3, Tomb Raider, Xbox 360) 9.5/10

All i can say is that this year has started with a bang for me. Ni No Kuni was one of the best jrpgs i have played in years with its own original identity. Tomb Raider has exceeded every expectation and in 2 weeks i get to play the spiritual successor to my fav game this gen...bioshock. Hell, Dragons Dogma was maybe my favorite game of 2012 and its releasing and expansion in April. With GTA5 and the ps4, this yr is gonna be epic.

Now, i agree mostly with the review but it got me thinking about the inevitable next gen sequel, given the quality and the sales so far. Where do u go from here? It isnt focused on tombs or puzzles, even as much as Uncharted is. Its open but not entirely. Also, its a very personal origin story that wont exist next time. Maybe they can make a game about her evolution to world famous archeologist who is fearless. It will be hard to duplicate this games emotion. Also, the island was key and i dont see them crashing a ship on an island again. Maybe someone she loved gets kidnapped and she is forced somewhere...or she is. One possibility for a story could be her relationship with her father and her love for archeology. It would allow a refocusing on tombs and treasure.

It is a fantastic game but i worry that without a focus on tombs, origin, or emotional gripping story about Laras coming of age, a sequel may be difficult to pull off without feeling like she is just another action star on a hunt for treasure killing hundreds with ease before finding what she is after. Maybe this game just stands on its own. Either way, i am currently enjoying one great ride and i know that if anyone can pull off a sequel, it is crystal dynamics.

The sequel could be great if they do it right. As long as they have an amazing story and a lot of the emotional elements that this game had, Crystal Dynamics will make another hit! It's great to have a game where I can connect with the main character. That helped me want to keep playing. That was a positive with Ni No Kuni. I loved the characters in that game.

Like you said, there needs to be a focus on tombs. After all, the game is called Tomb Raider!! Besides that, this is easily my favorite Tomb Raider. It's early in the year, but this will be praised during game of the year awards!
