Next-Gen: PS4 & Xbox 720 'Will Need Lower Price Points At Launch'

NowGamer: Just how expensive will Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox 720 be when they launch? Hopefully, not too expensive. (Microsoft, Next-Gen, Sony)

the consoles need to be very powerful with as many features as possible to improve gaming over all. we dont need barely capable consoles which arent much more powerful than ps3 and xbox because there would be a lot of sort comings in gaming tech and generation wouldnt be long.

look at the support of the wii u. other than most third parties not supporting the system the system is too weak to get most games that will be on xbox 720 and ps4. core gamers who follow gaming trends and buy the top end gaming systems arent content with playing games with tech theyve been playing for over 7 years on ps3 and xbox.

the xbox 720 and ps4 should be very powerful, play all back catalog of older games discs and digital , have a lot of the expected features along with new ones and be priced around 500quid. im a gamer so ill buy a quality system

you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. if gamers care about power and the latest hardware, YOU BUY A PC. please stop bashing video game systems just because you game for the wrong reasons. all gaming systems have there strengths and weaknesses all aiming at different experiences. stop being a troll.

Sorry I disagree with the statement if gamers care about latest hardware and power "You buy a PC". I bought a PC hell i built it a more powerful one than my ps3 and probably just as powerful as the ps4 and that was 3 years ago, granted at more than double the cost. PC gaming is not the be and end all of gaming its far from it. PC gaming lacks direction, optimization and has been a huge mess for quite some time now which is why consoles is the highly favorite of choice for gaming.

I do want my console to be as powerful as possible because that's where the best games in the industry are made by the best developers. That's why I like Sony they try to put out the best they can with what they can no matter what for the gamer. However I dont really care about things like BC because at launch I buy a new console to play NEW games not the same old 1s so if they cut those things to cut price im all for it. Even though I would buy another 600 dollar ps at launch no hesitation im sure Sony is looking to cut 50-100 dollars off the ps3 launch prices to make up for the lost market share of this current gen.

Hold on a minute, you chastise the PC for not having a clear direction and optimization yet you don't mention the problems we saw on the PS3 where developers struggled and how backwards compatibility became an issue because of hardware changes?

Both consoles and PC's have their strengths and weaknesses. The consoles get more marketing, that's where huge companies like Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo spend a lot of money with advertising. We don't see it as much on the PC because those 3 major companies want you to buy their hardware. Yes consoles are more optimized and yes they are less costly to get started. However when I see games like Battlefield 3 simply blow away what can be done on the consoles I laugh at all the arguments we see on how powerful the PS3 was compared to the Xbox 360. Now we are already seeing that fanboy talk before the next gen even begins with people once again clamoring how the next Xbox is going to be weaker because of the RAM. Console owners need to stop acting like elitists if they don't want PC gamers to get involved.

The PC offers far more freedom and choice. The problem is developers often don't want to utilize what it can do fully. Just like how some developers didn't fully exploit the PS3. The other downside to the PC is also economics. You won't see a developer like the ones who created Dark Souls putting all of their emphasis on a PC version because they don't have the experience. It's also about sales. I would imagine Dark Souls sold a hell of a lot more on consoles than the PC and we may be seeing that shift happen in PC games like Call of Duty now. That is largely because of Microsoft marketing and making the series more mainstream.

But then you have games like World of Warcraft that blow most console games out of the water sales wise. So when it's done right (marketing and designed for the PC) PC games can sell well. I think even Diablo III sold very well even with all the controversy surrounding it's DRM.

The problem w/ PC gaming is it offers TOO much freedom and TOO much choice. That is the Achilles heel of PC gaming and the reason why it will always struggle besides the MMO market that seems to be the only thing going for PC gaming keeping it alive and the few other games like League of Legends that emerge. Developers arent lazy to optimize its just too dam hard for them to optimize for every piece of new hardware that comes out each and every year. Everything has almost their own set of drivers and things they have to take into account new hardware comes out after they make games they have to take that into account. I believe that having the best piece of hardware always is a double edge sword at the moment of pc gaming. It slows down development and the time developers should be spending time optimizing their engines to produce more efficient better quality games they have to rely more on the raw power of the hardware. Then they have to ship unpolished games and fix it later. Also a lot of your "freedom" has and will continue to be restricted with drm.

Only strength pc gaming to me is RTS games and MMOs which require keyboard and mouse.

"the consoles need to be very powerful"

In relation to what? the out going gen or current low end Mid range PCs?

"play all back catalog of older games discs and digital"

BC is pretty much dead in the water, Architectures have completely changed since the last gen hence BC is out the window.

People want the consoles to be cheap plus be powerful and have BC, i honestly think they are demanding a bit too much.

If all you want is a powerful machine with BC then really PC is the only option here.

This article is dumb. Everyone knows that sony and Microsoft won't release cheap consoles just to have a low price point. Both sony and Microsoft released there consoles this gen with 400$+ and look how well they did. Nintendo on the other hand is a different story. They don't have the hard core support to help them out when releasing expensive consoles

Not true. The Xbox 360 came out with an entry price of $299 and the pro model for $399 which included a hard drive. By comparison the PS3 came out starting at $499 without wi-fi and the pro model for $599.

I expect both the PS4 and next Xbox to have two models once again. I also expect them all to be priced between $399 and $499 for the pro models and Microsoft might do something different, have the option of a contract based system where the upfront cost is low but with a 2 or 3 year term attached like we see with cellphones.

Having a starting price point for the next consoles at $500 or more wouldn't go over very well.

This depends on a lot of things like for example what the hardware will be like and if there is a good library of games that will make the consoles worth buying.

Just because the Wii U isnt selling to well in the market doesnt mean that the 720 and the PS4 will suffer the same fate. If Sony can manage to price their console at 400€ (for example) and release it with a great line up of games then the system will not suffer the same fate as the Wii U. However if Sony goes nuts and sells it at 700€ (like some desperate Nintendo fanboys are claiming) with a poor line up of games (with heavy 3rd party support i doubt that will happen) then the console will sell miserably in the market.
Indo  +   657d ago
No matter what the price range is , I say $400-$550, people are going to buy it. We've been asking for more power from these Next-Gen consoles so expect a price tag to match.
skydragoonity  +   657d ago
Regardless of what any1 thinks or feels, ps4 & 720 will be expensive at launch.
Gamer-40  +   657d ago
Simple. No strong launch lineup, no buy high price.
I like and want AAA games, not only console.
