What is the Role of Controversy in Gaming?

Excerpt:

"Video games are no stranger to controversy. Our beloved medium has been blamed for everything from violence to obesity, but the controversy I want to talk about today isn’t of that sort. Sure, we could go on about how even though Manhunt is visceral and gory, it doesn’t necessarily cause people to commit real acts of violence, or about how the Hot Coffee Mod for GTA San Andreas was hardly shocking in a game involving gang shootings and drug dealing, but that’s a well that has long run dry. I say release it; set a new standard in "mature" gaming. I'm open to the idea of having more mature games that actually question what the majority of the public want to ignore. Kojima earned my respect because he's willing to release what others don't - good stories that make the public question the world around us.

I'd vote to release the game the way it should be, and not worry about what the media or nitpickers say. Those types of people will always target gaming and other types of media regardless of how good/safe it is.
