Unreal Engine 4 now available for PS4

GE: "Epic Games has announced that its Unreal Engine 4 is now available for the PlayStation 4." (PS4)

I expect UE4 to use the full potential of the PS4.
Also, I want to see diversity with the engines. Too much UE last gen, give me FOX Engine, Cryengine 3.5, Frostbite 2.5, Luminious Engine, and more

I hope the damn thing works day-one. Is easier to work with. UE4 that is.
NewMonday  +   695d ago

most of all those are exclusive company wide only and not for licensing.

Cryengine is available for licensing but hardly anyone uses it for some reason.

@newmonday: the reason is the licence fee for Cryengine is something about $1M. Companies that can afford it have their own proprietary engines. Besides, Cryengine isn't really suitable for consoles, see how Crysis 3 performs (15 FPS is a joke).

I'm particularly eager to see Frostbite on next gens, same as proprietary Sony engines from SMS and ND. But I guess we have to wait with ND till E3. They won't reveal anything before TLOU releases. Ubisoft also has some really neat engines (Watch_Dogs and Assassin).

Its comical that Crytek first came to general note for making a game which only really played on maxed out PCs, then pushed their engine for cross platforming use, only for it to best perform on high-end PCs.

Give me all the engines!! *swims in code*

How about some Unreal Tournament with user mods like ps3? Sounds great to me!

the Rai engine.. if deep down was true gameplay wow we got few amazing engines this gen.. this time..
cannon8800  +   695d ago
Panta Rhei Engine :D and yes it was running in real time. It's actually easy to tell.

Good to hear that, but am I the only one
who actually fears that the next gen Multi-platform titles (Im only referring to PS4 and X.720) They wont be able utilize PS4 Tech advantage in comparison to Xbox?
And that's because Microsoft's "rule" of not having an inferior port if not better?! <- don't even know if this pathetic rule is true...
I really hope this won't be the case :/

BitbyDeath  +   695d ago
No i think that was about something else cause MS had a few inferior ports, the worst i remember being FFXIII
KwietStorm  +   695d ago
I never heard anything about a rule against inferior ports. I only read about not accepting a game later than the PS3 version or without the same content, something like that.
konnerbllb  +   694d ago
There's no such rule by MS. The reason multiplatform games are better on the 360 is because it's easier to code for and port to. There aren't as many memory tricks to perform on the 360 because of it's ram size and architecture.

WONDER if madden will actually give a real try at simulation football this go round
DeadlyFire  +   695d ago
Well last gen everyone relied on UE. This gen it looks like most major publishers have their own engine for many titles under their umbrella with UE 4 and CE 3.x to fill in any gaps.

Konami - Fox Engine
Square Enix - Luminious
Bethesda - id Tech 5.x
EA - Frostbite 2.x
Capcom - Panta Rhei

And likely some more out there. :P
plaZeHD  +   695d ago
All first party Sony In-House engines will run and look better than those engines you listed, on PlayStation 4.
ChickeyCantor  +   694d ago
in the end it wouldn't matter. It's the mechanics and artistic value that mask the engine. Developers just need to make great games.
The_Infected  +   695d ago
Good to hear. Unreal Engine 4 looks amazing. Can't wait to see some games on PS4 using it.
first1NFANTRY  +   695d ago
hopefully the days of blocky, plastic looking character models are a thing of the past. One of the many reasons why i dislike the unreal engine.
ANIALATOR136  +   695d ago
yes and everything too shiny

But that's what made Gears' look soo good i thought? Lends a little more detail/realism to the characters in my opinion.
Themba76  +   694d ago
I agree true next gen is seeing diversity in textures on a single character not 1. I want to see metal look like real metal cloth look like cloth hair look like real hair skin look like real skin not evrything look like shiny plastic. until that happens it's not truely next gen.
Derekvinyard13  +   695d ago
Technically can't wait to see how it is
Kennytaur  +   694d ago
The UE4 demo has the same "shiny plastic" look to it.
UnholyLight  +   694d ago

You make a great argument and I totally agree!! I'm sure this gen we will see those things you suggest
clintagious650  +   695d ago
This will be great for 3rd party devs to use, i rather see sony 1st party studio create an engine between sony santa monica & naughty dog & gg & just share that engine with all their 1st party studios.
ziggurcat  +   695d ago
given the PS4's architecture, i expect the unreal engine to perform *much* better than it did on the PS3. i tended to avoid getting the PS3 version of games that used the unreal engine unless it was one of those 2-3 X360 discs vs. 1 PS3 disc situations.
Minato-Namikaze  +   695d ago
Weird thing was when Epic made unreal tournament 2008 for ps3 it ran real smoothly. UE3 could have run really well on ps3 but i guess most devs couldn't get their heads around the ps3.
Crillvirus81  +   695d ago
Great now they can start making games for the ps4 that will be out in about 2 or 3 years or less If there rushed ports lol
Genuine-User  +   695d ago
Ports of what exactly?
Crillvirus81  +   695d ago
Well if its available now then I was just saying how long it would take them to make games using unreal 4 ps4 comes out in holiday 2013 so with this news I was just saying that they won't have no games out using the tech till about 2 years or more unless its a port from a game allready in devolpment on pc or p3 or xbox using the tech cause if I remember correct epics Tim said ur3 was compatible with 4 and that 4 was able to scale up or down to what ever platform needed so I wasn't trolling lol

"We'll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could," but emphasizes that "Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform."

Well its been confirmed for the Wii U and the PS4 all that's left is the 720.

porkChop  +   695d ago
Well it hasn't been "confirmed" for the Wii U, quite the opposite. Epic said they will not develop or support UE4 for the Wii U. If developers want to use UE4 on Wii U they can only do it if they're porting a game from other platforms to the Wii U. And the developers will have to port and re-code UE4 themselves to work with the Wii U, which wont be easy.

Can't wait to see what Devs do with the new engine ! Exciting times for gamers on both next gen systems "PS4 & XBOX3"

Sorry WiiU ! You failed again to capture adult and hardcore gamers again

Hahaha, Today Sony must have given middleware developers the go
To announce full support and availability of the full tools for the PS4, because DAMN, 5 middleware tools were announced today as available to PS4 Devs. We already knew epic was supporting the platform but it now seems Sony's platform is no longer in prototype hardware form given the Full toolset for these middleware are now available and running smoothly.

The PS4 is really really looking like first day purchase the more I learn about it.

I'm happy The UE4 is now tailor made to PS4 Specs This should produce some great looking less blocky, less plastic looking, and more seamless experience in game environment and characters. :)

chalk another on the Board, but Sony is doing great things. Bring on E3 and GDC 2013.

I hope unreal tournament 4 is being readied for launch window. Destructable environments and stupidly over the top particle effects FTW

ps4 Better be out in the UK in November the 17 also or i will cry! Cant wait for games with these sort of graphic finesse! Ps3 slim is going to my son and his fat one (my original) will be going in the girls room so they can watch blu ray . We are the Sony family!
xdavillainx  +   695d ago
It will be for the next Xbox too, Eventually.
SilentNegotiator  +   695d ago

I thought Epic was going to pass on them this time.

xdavillainx  +   692d ago
Why are you comparing me to Pachter? He's well known and I wasn't stating an analysis.
worldwidegaming  +   695d ago
The engine makes developers work a lot easier!
Anyone who learned how to use the last engine will
be delighted how much faster and more flexible the
new engine will be.
(this is speculation.)
They most likely will start on consoles to sell
the engine and then blast the settings up a notch
on the PC later on.
Rhythmattic  +   695d ago
As we know, many ports to PS3 were not as good as the 360 port...

Now no one has an excuse.
MYSTERIO360  +   694d ago
Hopefully we see new IPs as well as Gears and Unreal tournament on PS4 next gen.
TemplarDante  +   694d ago
Oh yeah! The UE4 tech demo and the Panta Rei game engine demos were jawdropping! Insane how they were real time! NEXT GEN DAY 1 :)
