Miyamoto Says He’d Rather Create New Video Games Than Work On Remakes

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is being remade for Wii U, but does Nintendo plan on enhancing more older games to bring them to its latest console? In an interview, GameSpot asked Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto whether the company is considering remaking more games for Wii U. Miyamoto replied by saying he can’t talk about titles that Nintendo hasn’t announced to the public, and that he is more interested in creating new video games, rather than working on remakes. (Industry, Shigeru Miyamoto, The Legend of Zelda, Wii U)

This is one of those things that I love about Nintendo devs. They prefer to create bring news things to the for front.

I've never been fond of remakes and HD rereleases. If the game was good then let it be. Rerelease the actual original game. Don't f*** with the formula.

Reason for this is that the thing that make a game good is all attributes done in a certain order at a certain time. When thing are remade they try to "update", or "improve" the the game which distorts the formula that made it good and often makes it less good.

This is why I just can't comprehend why people want a remake of FF7. The talent that made the series big has changed(read quit and gone elsewhere), the times have change and what they will get is completely different and more than likely a "less good" game that cashes in on FF7's namesake.

We need new games in the industry. Let the time of remakes and revamps end. With that said, will be looking forward to Wind Waker HD to see if they've made it any better.

"This is one of those things that I love about Nintendo devs. They prefer to create bring news things to the for front"

So why haven't they been doing this lately...

They've been relying on Mario and Zelda for years

The only new game coming out made by Nintendo for the Wii U is Pikman 3 but even then it's an old franchise.....took then long enough.
Deku-Johnny  +   565d ago
Every Zelda game is something new though that's the point. The only reason Sony and Microsoft don't rely on the same franchises over and over is because they haven't been able to establish a franchise good enough to do so. If either of them managed to create an IP that was able to carry on for over 25 years then they'd rely on that more than anything. Like Microsoft with Halo and Gears, they're trying to make those franchises their Mario and Zelda.
3-4-5  +   565d ago
Yes Mario & Zelda games account for about 30% of their games...

You can't just ignore the other 70% of games that aren't Mario related just because you dislike Nintendo.

Same could be said of that overrated series God of Generic War, or Uncharted.

Mario galaxy is more inovative in one game than killzone1-3 ,all the halos, gears of war1-3, and uncharted 1-3 are combined, just because they use the same character doesn't mean the games are all the same. i don't understand why this is so hard for people to comprehend. and i have played all the games i listed, i'm not a fanboy, just stating the facts.

"Mario galaxy is more inovative in one game than killzone1-3 ,all the halos, gears of war1-3, and uncharted 1-3 are combined, just because they use the same character doesn't mean the games are all the same"

Oh come on it's a fantastic game but it's not inovative.

It's basicaly a 3D Mario game in space

It has the same structure of Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. For me Mario 64 was inovative because I at the time hadn't seen anything like it but Mario Galaxy, while good looking and had fantastic gameplay which took the 3D Mario games forward, didn't offer anything new...except for a new setting and new power ups

@3-4-5

"You can't just ignore the other 70% of games that aren't Mario related just because you dislike Nintendo."

Dislike Nintendo....so me criticizing Nintendo is me disliking them completely. Right that makes so much sense /s

I like Nintendo, I just think they arn't as creative as they were back in the Nes/N64/Gamecube days when they took risks with new IPs.

It's took them long enough to make Pikamn 3, a new Yoshi game which in a way isn't what fans really wanted (Yoshis Island 2 anyone), no Starfox, no F-Zero, Luigis Mansion was pushed to a handheld, Chibi Robo I could go on...

So whats the other 70% you speak of then? Games other then Mario and co that were DEVELOPED by Nintendo

@Deku-Johnny

"Every Zelda game is something new though that's the point."

Really because I was highly disappointed with Skyward Sword. It was such a step back for the the franchise.

@root, maybe inovative was the wrong word, but when it comes to gameplay varietty, i believe the statement is correct, you are almost never doing the same thing twice in not just galaxy but most nintendo games. better than most of those so called "Fresh" new IP's that are just more driving simulators or basic shooters with a minor tweak to the gameplay.
PopRocks359  +   565d ago
@Root

Why do you insist on suggesting that Mario and Zelda sequels bring nothing new to the table?

When were you using a water powered jetpack in Mario Galaxy? When were little aliens helping you in Mario 64? When in Ocarina of Time were you flying on a large red bird? When in Wind Waker was the moon about to crash onto the earth?

They are not the same game and all they share is their formula. A formula that works. The moment they stop appreciating that is the sooner Mario and Zelda fall into the same crappy obscurity that Sonic has fallen into.

Yeah they are part of the story which adds to the gameplay. You can;t really add a water jet pack to Mario Galaxy can you so of course they had to come up with something else

The point is the game play is roughly the same as it was years ago.

Sigh...... this again? Ok, new nintendo games on just 3DS and Wii U alone:
Nintendo Land
Project X
Steel diver
Kid Icarus 3 may as well be a new franchise
rolling western
pushmo
Sakura samurai
Freaky forms
fluidity
harmoknight
Wonderful 101 (Nintendo helped out and are publishing)

@AWBrawler

Nintendoland - Thats just a minigame collection to show off what the Wii U can do.

Project X - Developers - Banpresto and
Monolith Soft

Kid Icarus 3 - Not new is it though

Rolling Western - Developers - Vanpool

Freaky Forms - Developers - Asobism

Fluidity - Developers - Curve Studios

Wonderful 101 - Developers - Platinum Games

Most of those games were not developed by Nintendo, just published by them. Some were though but still they aren't really the next new franchise are they. Oh and most of them were for the 3DS, were talking about the main console here.

EDIT: Below

"Those are all "Nintendo I.P.s". regardless of who helped develop them. If they weren't then that would mean that Sony had no original I.P.s last gen because it was always studio outside of Sony that made its major titles."

Are you serious....Sony owns their studios Nintendo dosen't own the majority of the studios above like Platinum Games or Curve Studios.

First, they have been creating new series and still are. Right now, for the Wii U, they have the Wonderful 101, Measure Up, Monoliths X, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Pokemon Scramble U, Nintendo Land, and this is only the first year.

On the Wii they had, Fluidity, Wii Sports, Rhythm Heaven, Wii Fit, The Last Story, Wii Music, Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower, FlingSmash, Wii Party, Epic Yarn, Excite Truck, Punch Out, Excitebots, Another Code R, Battalion Wars 2, Big Brain Academy etc, etc.

Second, Mario and Zelda are characters. The actual games that feature them are completely different from the previous in the majority aspects.

They never release more than 2 major Zelda/Mario games per gen. There have been only 3 major Zelda/Mario console games released in the past 12 years. How people spin this as being the only thing they create is beyond me.

NOTE: Those are all "Nintendo I.P.s". regardless of who helped develop them. If they weren't then that would mean that Sony had no original I.P.s last gen because it was always studio outside of Sony that made its major titles.

How many times has Ocarina of Time been redone now? like 18 times?
linkofrs  +   565d ago
Well actually its been redone once, twice if you count masterquest but that was not fully released until the 3ds. However it has been ported 3 times(one of those times being a windwaker preorder bonus. Honestly that's not that ridiculous. The only time they marketed a port was for the 3ds. However I do agree with your main point they should be focused on making new games. But I don't blame them for not, everytime they do make a new game noone talks about it at all.
PopRocks359  +   565d ago
Ocarina of Time has been ported twice and remade once, actually. The closest it ever got to a remake in a sequel was Twilight Princess which had some of the same elements and landmarks.

So saying it's been remade "like 18 times" is as gross an exaggeration as it gets.
Reverent  +   565d ago
@linkofrs, Masterquest came out on the gamecube years before the 3ds was even out.

Unless you count the masters question which was simply a rearranged version made for hardcore fans, not a remake.

Pretty interesting.
LOL_WUT  +   565d ago
Its quite common for Nintendo fans to react like that but, that one takes the cake. ;)

I'm glad that Miyamoto thinks this way it might be a little too late considering how he's planning on retiring soon.
I always though HD re-releases were meant for people who missed out on them the first time around. I personally missed the Sly trilogy back in the Ps2 era, thanks to the Sly collection i was able to play em (in 3D). I think half of the reason they're made is so that the newest generation of gamers can experience great games (the whole freaking world doesn't revolve around you,,, you know <_<). There's also people who want to replay the game for nostalgias sake. Either way, as long as the flow of HD re-releases doesn't stop the constant flow of current sequels (Uncharted 3, God of War:A, Sly 4) or new Ip's (The last of us, Beyond, the puppeteer) then i have zero problem with them sticking around, and neither should you.

As for this

"This is one of those things that I love about Nintendo devs. They prefer to create bring news things to the for front."

I can't even tell if you're serious.

Yeah true but its bout time we experience a darker world of zelda. Trust me it would not hurt to bring the zelda world with even fallout 3 graphics would be awesome. Kind of tired of the cartoony look. I want zelda to come to the darkside with an immersive world we can explore but keep the same gameplay mechanics & all the little cool side quests. Its bout time they bring zelda to life especially since the wii u is capable of doing it. I bet ppl at e3 would go NUTS if they ever did that.

Not his fault Mario outsells his other work by more than twice the amount. Pikmin is one of the most original concepts and games he (or possibly anyone) has ever created but it gets overshadowed by other IPs. I hope the same doesn't happen to the new IP he said he is working on, but it most likely will.

This HD rerelease is sad to me because I still remember as a kid the gamecube launch and wish they had not rushed to be the first to the market. Wii U won't have the install base they want until they create interesting new IPs and bring bac the old ones people loved. Luigi's Manision 2, Smash Bros, new Mario, new Zelda, new star Fox, new mario party, Walugi doing something, Wario ware games. Make it happen nintendo and I and many others will follow. But right now I do not know what Nintendo is thinking. At least they have some third party support but how will the games compare who knows

I guess I did state this earlier but people seem to be ignoring the fact he stepped down from his previous position and is developing a new ip as we speak. Also companies have to make money you know, that's why sequels exist pretty much. Its very challenging to make a new ip, you have to consider whether it will tank or not. Honestly I haven't seen a creative new ip from anyone in a while, excluding journey.

Anyone who thinks the Galaxy games are the same as Sunshine, haven't played them.

Anyone who thinks Other M is like the Prime games, is blind.

Kirby Epic Yarn isn't different from the other Kirby's?

Hell, even Fire Emblem is a lot different this time around.

This whole "recycling the same game" thing needs to go on somewhere lol.

@blsckblades

Read Shoke's comment. Generating sequels is not stagnation. And lo and behold, of course you single out Nintendo when EVERY major publisher does exactly the same thing. In fact Microsoft is even worse at it since their only two exclusive franchises are Halo and Gears of War, both of which have new installments every now and again and neither of which change the overall formula (sans Halo Wars).

Mario always fights Bowser

Same difference. Zelda can change game styles a million times, and Link will have Ganon as the final boss a million times. Same goes for Mario. You enjoy those recycled story lines all you want.

New storylines are just a cover up for recycled gameplay.

Ganondorf only appeared as the main boss in 6 out the 16 Zelda games (8 if you count him as the secret boss in Oracle of seasons and ages). Hell, he wasn't even the boss in the new Zelda game.

@danitanzo Does it matter as long as the Gameplay is good and is consistently improved upon?
CaptainN  +   563d ago
Link always fights Ganon:

Demise,Majoras Mask,Shadow Link,Vaati and others would like to have a word with you!

Mario always fights Bowser:

Donkey Kong,King Wart,Wario and Tatanaka would also like you to have a sit down with them!

Yea, if you actually played all the games in the series instead of pre-judging them, you might actually know they all have different stories.

Every Zelda game does not have the same Link and Zelda.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask Link are the same.

Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass Link are the same.

Zelda I and II Link are the same.

Skyward Sword Link and Zelda are the first of them. All the other Link and Zelda are their descendants reincarnated.

Ganondorf is reincarnated of Demise the Demon King the cause of the Eternal Chaos and Evil of Legend of Zelda Universe.

Bowser on the others hands is the main villain.

Each Final Boss Battle of Bowser is different.
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario 3D Land
New Super Mario Bros. U

Each of these games have different boss battles of Bowser.

Miyamoto says he'd rather crate new video games than work on remakes.
Then why do we always see the same games like mario, dk, zelda all these games that been around for over 20 years. How bout he create some new characters and games that's not related to any of games from the pass. Do something fresh that's not related to any of them.
Dj7FairyTail  +   561d ago
Using the same franchise does not mean Remake.

Remake implies taking a game that has already been on the marketing and do it over from scratch on a different or newer platform.

Mario goes form 2D and 3D
Zelda goes form 2D and 3D Top-Down, 3D Open World and 2D Side Scrolling.

There only been 15 mainnline Zelda games since 1986.
Zelda I
Zelda II
Zelda ALttP
Zelda Link's Awakening
Zelda OoT
Zelda Oracles Ages and Seasons
Zelda Majora's Mask
Zelda Four Swords
Zelda Wind Waker
Zelda Minish Cap
Zelda Four Swords Adventure
Zelda Twilight Princess
Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Zelda Spirit Tracks
Zelda Skyward Sword

Now let's look at Ratchet and Clank which started 2002.
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet Deadlocked
Ratchet & Clank Size Matters
Secret Agent Clank
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault

11 Games since 2002 and it 2013.

11 Games in 11 Years.

All he is stating is that he would rather work on something brand new(be that as it may an established franchise or not) New is New. Now if he said that he would rather create new IP's all of the time, then I would expect the type of responses that are seen here in this post.

Is it just me or does every gaming company use Franchises for their consoles. Also how many 3rd parties are remade over and over like Madden, 2K series, COD, GTA and Metal Gear to name a few. All of these games, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party, debuted on a console and are in development to be released or have already been released as of today. This goes back decades. So if Nintendo makes 40 Zeldas, Sony makes 25 God or Wars, and Xbox makes 35 Halos with spin - offs, whats the difference?
khowat  +   564d ago
The difference is that everyone here thinks that nintendo's only two games are mario and zelda and that they're "tired" and nintendo needs something "new" and "fresh", and that they need to make a new ip. Like fuck, does a game have to have new characters to be good? I mean yeah new ips are great but that doesn't mean that anything that isn't is bad.
RFornillos4  +   564d ago
for every one complaining about Nintendo rehashing and/or their characters, there's Microsoft's Halo and Gears of War, and Sony's God of War and Uncharted. Then there's 3rd party franchises like COD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, etc. need I elaborate more?

these other companies are as guilty as Nintendo when it comes to re-using their characters. at least Nintendo attempts to freshen up their characters by introducing something new to the franchise most of the time. i'm saying "most" coz they can also be guilty of not adding enough to make it fresh.

so really does it matter whether nintendo and any of the other companies remake, rehash, or milk their franchises? frankly speaking, no. otherwise these franchises won't make a buck. the fact that they still do (mario, halo, gow, etc.) means there are plenty of people still enjoying those games and that's what's important. in reality, those who are complaining are simply the fanboys who can't admit that the companies they're supporting are also doing the same thing; or simply a small percentage of gamers who prefer to see new things always.
