SimCity Review [Game Revolution]

"In the past two days, I've been kicked out of my game sessions about five times and have been unable to connect to servers about ten times. Without the ability to save my progress, as it is auto-saved onto the servers, it's frustrating to lose hours worth of work merely due to a crash or connection error I have little to no control over. Being able to save manually, even if it is to an online server and perhaps only once every 30 minutes or so, would have been a good idea."

~ Nick Tan, Game Revolution (PC, SimCity) 3.5/5

Always-on DRM for a game like Sim City? Really?

Sounds like EA is eager to play a game called Sim No Customers. Because I'm out.

So how did it get a 3.5/5? If you can't play the game then how can it possibly get a score at all, much less a positive one?

That's because once you actually get into the game, it's quite nice. More like a 4.5/5, when it does play. That's blame more on EA than Maxis, the developer.

But that's the issue... "when it does play". The review is on the product as a whole. The decision to put DRM that has ultimately broken the game for countless people was the decision of the publisher which should affect the score. A game that is unplayable because of glitches or whatever is still unplayable which should reflect on the final score.

Game critics are pretty forgiving of game-breaking glitches, crashes, and crappy customer service. Your game can be full of things like that and still get high praise and win awards.

But if your story is trite? Ooooohhhhh boy, you better watch out! Here come the bad reviews!

Game Reviews. So awesome.

Well, once you get in game I suppose it's quite nice.

The game must be pretty nice for those that can actually play.
