Positive Gaming and Making the Pastime Fun Again

Any venture into comments sections on virtually any site shows a darker side to the people who enjoy video games. Sometimes criticism is necessary and healthy, but too much too often and our overall association with the wonderful games we play risks becoming negative and harmful to ourselves, our cultural image, and our relationships to the medium. (Culture, EA, Industry, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Loose much if not all of the competitiveness. Don't let all AA titles be 1st or 3rd perspective. Would like to see social subside before it become more established.

While I don't want to deny that many people get innate joy from competitive gaming, I agree that for me at least competition ruins a good time. It's like the saying "golf ruins a good walk." By only playing super smash bros on final destination with no items, for example, you lose a lot of the fun that comes from random, interesting matches. Similarly, competitive pokemon takes a lot of fun out of the series for me. Ultimately it all comes down to a set of numbers and values that take a lot of the characterization and personality from the games. Not to say that that form of gaming has no value or shouldn't be done. Just not for me.

I do agree that it is competitiveness that kills a lot of the fun. Especially if you have that one guy who smack talks while everyone stays quite. That one guy that complains about how the game cheats him or how his moves work better at home or how the TV is lagging his controls. When that guy wins, he flaunts...when he loses...he blames everything other than his lack of skill...

It's really that seriousness about games that can kill the fun. A lot of gamers hate losing and will do anything to win. I lost that stigma years ago and when I play fighting games, if I know I can beat the other player...I go easy on them. I don't really care about losing at all, not any more. It's just a game after all. Have fun! Mess around! Everything doesn't have to be serious business.
