Tomb Raider Works to Improve the Image of Women in Games

The new Tomb Raider looks to improve the general image and representation of women in video games. (Industry, PC, PS3, Tomb Raider, Xbox 360)

"The first lady of video games" I thought that was Samus??
peterthomas6  +   1074d ago
Only a select few knew she was actually a lady... :)

So now it's ok to have Terminator style women who cry one second then go on a killing rampage the next?

Does everything have to have a feminist connotation now? Can't it just be a good game that has a female protagonist?
Blacktric  +   1073d ago
Oh no, we can't have that. Also thinking that is really sexist. Also remember to check your privilege.

/s

On topic; it barely does anything new to "improve" image of women in video games. So please drop this feminism pandering crap, considering the sole reason of writing this has to be the barely existing issue being a hot topic right now.

That and the "race" card. If it's not a white guy, then SOMEONE out there is going to write an empowering article about "Black, Asian, Green, Martian, protagonists"

Indeed. Its insane, and mostly all the people writing these articles aren't from that demographic. i think people writing articles about how great it is that there's a black protagonist when you're white is just as racist.
I always feel there's some kind of element of either 'well done darkie' or some hack thinking that whatever community cant stand up for themselves or get offended on their behalf and then when someone turns round and ask someone who is say black about the apparent issue they turn around and say they dont give a fuck or that its funny.

the whole cinjured up issue of women makes me laugh too. The general rule of them is that they're usually somewhat empowered and beautiful. No different to film and tv. Think about it. you migght leer at Ivy from soul calibur on a tv screen but if she was a real and caught you doing it she'd break your feckin neck.

haha coming from the franchise that got filthy rich from basically having a character whose main points were big boobs and long legs. What a crock. You don't see me bitch when the hulk gets hulked up about how it's not a realistic or fair representation of men. People need to fuck off.

Jesus more of this political correctness crap. Listen I don't care if the character is black, white, boy, or girl. If it's helps the story and if the characters are good I'm buying the game.

Is writing an article like this a crime? You don't have to agree, but it's annoying how parrots blindly make accusations of political correctness (it's about censorship, not discussions or suggestions), swarming these articles.

I also don't see why many make a big deal out of these traits, but I also know that female and other minority protagonists are relatively rare in gaming, especially if you're looking for legitimately well-developed characters. That's just how it is and there's no harm in talking about it as long as you're not making any malicious accusations or demands.

I think you nailed why this is an issue in the first place:

"...I also know that female and other minority protagonists are relatively rare in gaming, especially if you're looking for legitimately well-developed characters."

This is exactly why Luke wrote this article, and why it is an issue in general.

This guy is going to need to play through the new game. Most of this is speculation most likely based on PR stuff.
