Tomb Raider PC Ultra VS TRESSFX Settings

With the newly released Tomb Raider, PC gamers have been excited to see the graphical enhancements adorning the superior version of the game. In the graphics menu of the game, toggling to the highest setting still leaves one feature unchecked. Right above "ultra" is "ultimate", which enables "TRESSFX". The superior graphics mode is both highly graphics intensive and equally impressive. Below are two different videos featuring the changes in hair rendering with each mode toggled. (PC, PS3, Tomb Raider, Xbox 360)

20% performance hit.........AMD will surely boost performance with their next driver update!!!
Derekvinyard13  +   1000d ago
This is a great comparison, so easy to see the difference
shutUpAndTakeMyMoney  +   1000d ago
amd = open standard. Nvidia = only on nvidia.
LocutusEstBorg  +   1000d ago
AMD = substandard

It runs on DirectX 11 which is grossly inefficient compared to a native CUDA application like PhysX. Not to mention TressFX looks like shit compared to nVidia's hair demo.

pretty game!
AllroundGamer  +   1000d ago
the hair jumps like crazy and is unnatural, definitely not worth buying a new card just for this "feature"...

and sometimes the ponytail disappears
jimmywolf  +   1000d ago
the jumpy hair did look odd but the flow effect was beautiful an very nice. it also show the potential of what they can do with effects as they become more common, remember how jagged 3d game were 15 years ago? an now look at them.
AllroundGamer  +   1000d ago
well yeah, it's a start.
camel_toad  +   1000d ago
Overall I'm liking the tressfx but there are times where her bangs defy gravity while her ponytail doesn't. Seems like something small they just overlooked.

Loving the game though.

Hmmm... the tressfx do give it a more realistic looking hair but it also give some weird unnecessary animations. They need to fix that.

One of the most beutiful games om PC atm. Running it with everything on max with a AMD 7970 GHz Editon card :)
Cryptcuzz  +   1000d ago
Hey man, do you know how it would run on an Nvidia GTX-460 SE 1 GB video card?

I want to get this game but I'm not sure if it would run on max.

Spec: Intel i5 3.47 GHz and 8 GB RAM.
T900  +   999d ago
It will run perfectly fine.

Just disable SSAO, TressFX, and use medium Shadows. It will still be miles ahead of the console version.
CrustifiedDibbs  +   1000d ago
gonna buy this game soon.

You can enable this feature with nvdia card right?
matgrowcott  +   1000d ago
You just need a DX11 compatible card, I believe.
OcelotRigz  +   1000d ago
Yeah but i think i read on PC Gamer today that it hits Nvidia cards much harder.

Yeah, to quote an article on PC Gamer;
"This footage was taken on a machine with an ATI Radeon HD 6970. Running the game on a comparable machine with a GeForce GTX 560 Ti, there’s a substantial performance hit with TressFX enabled – so much so that it’s unplayable. The 6970 is a more powerful card, but not by a huge margin – I wonder how much of this is down to TressFX being AMD’s proprietary tech. If you’re running a GeForce card, you may need to disable Fancy Hair."

I have a GTX 670 but i'll probably just enable it at the scene where you see the island and watch the scenery like that for 30 seconds:d
Eldyraen  +   1000d ago
My 680 ftw (2 way sli though) ran tress just fine--my problem like many nvidia users was tessellation causing crashes :(

Hopefully gets fixed soon as it does add enough for me to want to wait but even without tessellation it looks great. I'll probably just play and add it later or in next play through. I didn't get to play much but liked what I saw so far so just a minor gripe but still ridiculous as a bunch of cards are experiencing it.
xPhearR3dx  +   1000d ago
I'm able to run the game at max settings (aside from tessellation due to CTD's) with TessFX enabled at 1080p at around 40-50 FPS on a single 660 TI. Can't wait to order my new motherboard this Friday so I can SLI my 660 TI's. Already the cards, just need a SLI ready mobo.
narked  +   1000d ago
ran this well on 660ti. full graphics on at 1080p
Kinger8938  +   1000d ago
Is this game working well with crossfire? Im not too fussed about tressfx but would like to max it out on 2x2gb6950's

"PC gamers have been excited to see the graphical enhancements adorning the superior version of the game" because it gives her bloody bouncy hair!? LOL pc elitism at its worst and most embarrassing.
gamernova  +   1000d ago
So seeing games actually get better and being happy about it is PC elitism? You're pathetic kiddo haha

Stupidity aside, I got the game yesterday on PC at 11:00pm and it looked great but it kept crashing on me when I would reach auto saves. It looks very pretty but Nvidia needs to optimize the drivers just like they did with Crysis. There is no way I am going to try to play the game without the awesome hair lol although it does glitch a few times and randomly bounces.

It would seem you're displaying a bit of an inferiority complex, my friend. Nothing wrong with being excited about an advanced feature.

OT: I'm playing it right now, with a GTX 690, and while there is a bit of a performance hit, the difference between TressFX enabled/disabled is night-and-day. The hair moves so much better with it!

is it elitism to say games on ps4 look better than on current consoles? why is it elitism to say games on pc look better than on current consoles?
ExitToExisT  +   1000d ago
When you play it on a hdtv and with a x360 gamepad @ 1080p , high res textures , anti-aliasing , you get to play the superior version. The kind of version where you will call next gen on your new console at christmas 2013. And i have been playing like this for the past 2 years.
Cursinguser  +   1000d ago
Alright, bud. Get a grip. Nixxes handled the optimization for the PC version and if you're familiar with that studio, they are known for doing a great job at bringing games to the PC. Plenty of people have been "excited", because this meant that the version of Tomb Raider on the PC would get an upgrade far beyond what the current consoles could support. Call it elitism if you like, but I'd like my 'new" PC to run better than games playing on 8 year old hardware. Just my 2 cents.
KillerPwned  +   1000d ago
Fantastic game in terms of Gameplay and Graphics. Also has become my first game I cannot max out at least 30 FPS. I tried the TressFX and it took a hit on my GTX 560-Ti Hawk edition. So just by turning that off I got an extra 20-25FPS but the feature is nice I just personally wasnt at an awe over it at the moment.

I think there's certainly some refinement needed, it does look great except for the bouncing hair effect. As it is I think I'll leave it for the moment. It's a beautiful game without it anyway.

I have a 6850 HIS AMD. Can I run this at high?
Twignberries  +   1000d ago
I've got 2x gtx titans in sli that runs tressfx silky smooth ALL settings at maximum at 2560x1440, EXCEPT only with FXAA. If I use smaa x2 or x4 the hair turns into this murky blur :/ Not quite sure what the deal is there but I'm hoping it will be amended with an update. Also a word of advice to anyone considering buying the gtx titan, I don't feel they are anywhere near their true potential yet due to poor driver support, so it's probably best to wait a bit longer.
Crimsonwilson  +   1000d ago
I turned Tressfx off. Hair does not behave that way in real life. Although I dont really notice a performance issue with it on. I have an AMD 7850.
Kingscorpion1981  +   1000d ago
Yeah that's the same card I got! I kept it on for the first hour and I didn't notice a performance issue either! But for some reason my Ram went up a little
younghavok  +   1000d ago
Its a start but right now, just going off of that video, it was more annoying and unnatural than anything else.
PCpower  +   999d ago
I turned if off because the developers only gave TressFX to Lara Croft. Kind of silly to limit this tech to just her...
