Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive Previewed by Cnet

Microsoft's HD-DVD player may be the most affordable high-def movie player on the horizon, but CNET is worried about the lack of HDMI.

"As long as the Xbox 360 is without an HDMI output, we can't wholeheartedly recommend its HD-DVD attachment, although we expect it to be mildly popular among Xbox 360 owners who have the cash and the display to take advantage. If you're just looking for an entry point to HD-DVD, the upcoming Toshiba HD-A2 with its HDMI output, an $500 price, and "just a player" simplicity, is probably a better solution..."

Well Donkey, the only reason you posted this is because it's a short minded article sort trying to get short commings on the table.

But actually there aren't. But you're too blind to see.

MS said, when HDMI cables are nescessary and people want them, they will give them. The output videoport on the 360 is a digital one. No need like PS3 to include special HDMI ports and all those dumb stories about it by Sony. No, just release a HDMI cable. And I think they'll actually do that. Even before the HD-DVD actually comes out or it might even be included in the final retail package of HD-DVD.

MS always got nice things up their sleeve. First, Sony fanboys were shouting about the nr. 1 point to buy a PS3 for. Having 1080p over 720p. Almost no one will use it, but still.

Now 360 will have 1080p in games and movies. Fanboys are searching for something it hasn't got again. Yeah HDMI... Don't search any further. Any time fanboys think they got a new selling point... It's whiped of the planet earth by MS having a brilliant trick to perform. Just wait and see. That HDMI cable will be there before you got a PS3

zypher6401d ago

dude, chill out. this is one site's review about a piece of hardware thats inconsequential to gaming on the 360. so what that they didn't too much like it? its a movie player.

eques judicii6401d ago

This isn't even a review. It's just an examination of the contents. Once the package is shipped to cnet for them to play with they will put out a true review. But what they said at the end seemed a little biased, by saying just get a ps3... I don't think they should be judged yet, lets wait til both come out and see what happens... personally, hdmi doesn't matter that much considering the image is converted to analog in all sets but DLP (which I so desparately want!) and even then unless you spend 2500++ on a tv you aren't going to get 1080p so the market does not demand hdmi. When it does the 360 and ps3 will be ready... both systems are future proof for now, and both should worry about the wii and not each other... (11 mil by first quarter.... that's just wrong)

I do have an hdtv, but i don't think i'll buy the hd-dvd addon or a ps3 or anyother hd movie player because right now I don't need it (nor can I afford it) I'll wait til the price comes down and the whole mess is sorted out.

this statement:

"Sony's betting that hard-core gamers--and high-def fanatics looking for a sub-$1,000 Blu-ray player--will be happy to run up their credit card debt come November 17. But for parents searching for a holiday gift, the cheaper Xbox 360 and Wii will be tough competition, indeed"

is no more or less biased than this statement:

"And if you're looking for a gaming system this holiday season that can play movies in high-def too, the PlayStation 3 should be able to handle both nicely--if you're able to find it."

in any regard, both statements make perfectly good sense. i have no true desire for the next-gen DVD format either, which is why a) i'm not getting the HD-DVD drive for my 360, and b) i'm glad the Blu-ray drive on the PS3 will be used for games just as much as movie playback. would i'dve prefered that Sony just stuck with DVD's for a $200 cheaper PS3? yes. but at the same time, if Blu-ray can offer the next-gen quality in games most developers say it can, then i have no problem paying an extra $200 for the longer-term investment.

I'm not sure you completely understand why I think it was biased... its mainly because if you are addressing the merits and disadvantages of one platform why offer an equally acceptable option with no significant advantage? neither system will win the next few years (that would be the wii even though I think after 2 years it will be down to ps3 and 360) I would say focus on one product per "review" and don't try to hype up another system when its not needed (even if it is a valid statement) The statment followed a statement about toshiba's standalone that made the ps3 seem superior to 360 when its not truly the case (both are equal and it will be games that determine the next gen winner)

but that's my 2cents... trying to be biased

zypher6401d ago

well, i guess i can see where you're coming from. however, the way i look at it, offering the consumer an alternative to the product you're reviewing isn't biased, neither is it biased if you personally find something advantageous in the alternative as opposed to what you are reviewing (99% of gaming sites are currently doing this right now, when measuring what you get with the PS3 vs. its price compared to what you can have with the Wii60 for the same price). thats what cnosumer reviewing is all about: comparing a product against its nearest competitor to determine which offers the better deal. the fact that Microsoft and Sony have been behaving no better than their fanboys is the fire that fueled Cnet's end comment about the PS3 as an alternative. you can add to that the fact that the articles were geared towards consumers who would use such critical thinking to make said choices between two competing products.

eques judicii6401d ago

I definitely agree with you though, comparisons should be made at some point, but not until the devices are out. saying such, I actually don't like this article because it comes across negative on the 360 hddvd without actually trying it yet. So comparisons are good, but wait until you have both pieces first..

Thanks for the good thread.

zypher6401d ago

true, comparisons should be made when both pieces of hardware are out. while i didn't read cnet's full HD-DVD review, i'd just assumed that they had hardware near-complete enough to make a fairly assessed review.

in any regard, i too am glad for the exchange with you. just as long as a debate (rather in agreement or disagreement) is kept constructive and respectful, i'm all for it. peace, and good luck on all your gaming endeavors

Wow, Cnet doubts the ability of the player for Microsoft. I didn't think that it could actually display games in 1080p I thought it was 1080i max and only for movies, guess I was wrong.

To predict who will win the format war, all you have to do is look at which format is supported by the adult entertainment industry.

"I hate fanboys."

specialguest6401d ago (Edited 6401d ago )

you guys call everyone Sony fanboys and paid off by Sony huh? when will the excuse end. let me see... IGN, Gamepro, 1up, and many more, but now CNET? CNet call it like it is with every electronic brands. they've never been known to favor a certain product over another base on brand name. hahahah hilarious

OutLaw6401d ago

I agree with you on cnet I feel they're not bias. But I do feel it's to early to judge the Hd DVD add-on.

OutLaw6401d ago

Here is a link to gamestop about the HDMI cable so it's really not a problem but they cost $99 So if it's necessary go ahead and buy them. It will be available 12/01/06

FadeToBlack6400d ago

There you go, now 0.05% of people that own 1080p TV's can sleep at night lol

BIadestarX6401d ago (Edited 6401d ago )

The simple fact that the drive does not come with HDMI made me realized that M$ is going to come up with an HDMI adapter for the 360. If the HD-DVD drive would come with an HDMI port then this would mean that you couldn't use HDMI to display game (only movies), or M$ would have to come up with an adapter for the 360 while the HD-DVD would have it own port. This in term wouldn't make cense; since you would need 2 HDMI port on your TV to plug both devices(HD-DVD + 360). I do not understand where is the logic on adding hdmi ports for the HD-DVD when an HDMI adapter can be added to the 360 that can serve both the console and the hd-dvd drive. Also, consider the fact that the HD-DVD drive is just a drive; it does not process anything, it simply read the data, so it wouldn't make sense tecnically for data to be sent to the 360 then back to the HDDVD drive and then output to the TV.
So, I'm a bit disapointed about CNet about, "but we're worried about the lack of HDMI.", why would they expect the hd-dvd drive to have HDMI ports? Weird...

eques judicii6401d ago

They cannot put a av out (even hdmi) on the drive, because all the decompression and display drivers are in the xbox 360... this is why it comes in such a small case.. have you seen the size of standalones, they are huge and heavy because they require a computer to be built into them. So no, you will never see an hdmi port on the hd-dvd drive... but we should see a cable from microsoft in the near future (if they truly want to compete with ps3 for the hardcore rich gamers)

FadeToBlack6400d ago

The only thing the add on is used for is reading the disk and sending the info over to the 360 to be processed. Considering how much processing and rendering power the 360 has compared to the current stand alone players out there, the picture should be pretty sweet not to mention getting rid of the laggy loading and navigation menues of the toshiba player. Also to comment on the HDMI cable, there is one being released in December for $99

ApocalypseShadow6401d ago

ADD-ON:they won't be fully supported.that has been a fact for the last 20 years.

1.hd-dvd add-on does nothing right now for games.

2.has to be upgraded with a patch to support 1080p.

3.you have to buy the thing.spending more money.

4.has no hdmi.but is supposed to be next gen for movies on disc.

5.not supported by most companies that make movies.

6.why buy, when you can buy gears,rs:vegas, mass effect and alan wake?same with ps3.why buy a movie when you can buy a game?

TheMART6400d ago

1. HD-DVD will never do anything for games on 360. It's only for movie playback. If you own a 360 already it's a cheap choice over a standalone and save 300 dollars on that one. (or even 700 to save compared to BR at least...)

2. The patch runs automatically in the dashboard update. What's the problem with that exactly?

3. You have the choice to buy it and spend the money, compared to the PS3 where Sony shoves it down your throath even if you don't want or even need it. If you're a movie enthousiast buy it, otherwise you don't

4. Will have a HDMI cable the 360 output connector is capable of doing any digital signal. I bet even included in the final HD-DVD add-on retail package.

5. Enough support at this point in time, if not more then BR. Quality is better, price of standalone is half. We've seen expensive formats from Sony before, Betamax, UMD, minidisc. One thing in common: they all failed

6. Exactly. That's how I think also about it. But for those that do like movieplayback, they can CHOOSE to buy the HD-DVD. That's good

FadeToBlack6400d ago

Do you own a 1080p TV? And by the way what exactly is wrong with software updates that are of tested and proven before put into the live system? If a software update renders an improvement I dont see the problem with it. And do you think that sony wont be releasing these same updates over their live system?

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC3h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer5h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey6024h ago(Edited 4h ago)

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya2h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde2h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

Used to love this one, but X-Men Legends 1 and 2 will always be my favorites, especially Rise of Apocalypse. Would pay some good money to play it today with online multiplayer, back then I had no way to get a modem

RavenWolfx2h ago

Yeah, I loved the Legends games so much.

ZeekQuattro9h ago

I remember buying them dirt cheap on the PS4 and then a few days later I read they were delisted. I was wondering why the bundle was price so low and got my answer when that happened.

Knightofelemia8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Sad to say this is one game franchise next to the Xmen that needs a sequel. I use to play the hell out of Xmen Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Was great when my cousin had the OG Xbox play with four other people and then playing online. Great games glad to see it reappear even though I own the discs love the mechanics of this game.

Terry_B7h ago

It got a sequel..but for dumbass #reasons as a switch exclusive.

shinoff21837h ago

It looked so horrible to. They should've kept it similar to the first two.

Asplundh7h ago

Because Nintendo funded it, they did the same for Bayonetta.

Knightofelemia7h ago

I totally forgot about the Switch sequel.

jukins7h ago

Misleading. This page is whats available for people who owned the game prior to delisting.

Abnor_Mal6h ago

The first game was the best imo.
