Winning the console wars: Sony's not-so-secret weapon

Destructoid - This next generation of gaming is looking to provide the biggest industry shake-up in decades, with dedicated console manufacturers facing ever-growing competition from tablet devices, smartphones, and an upcoming wave of budget consoles like the Ouya.

This is why I was so bewildered by Sony’s over-hyped PlayStation 4 reveal earlier this month, an event which seemed almost completely ignorant of this coming shift in the marketplace. I’d expected to bear witness to some sort of master plan from one of the leading console manufactures. Instead we were treated to the non-news of another Final Fantasy game and a two-year late Diablo III port, each new awkward PR robot that took the stage helping to reinforce the idea that Sony had no idea what they were doing. (PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Sony)

A man is...unsure what conference a writer was watching on the 20th. A man saw many interesting titles and nothing but praise from developers and fans. A man is more hyped for this console than any in the past and will buy launch day for the first time.

"with dedicated console manufacturers facing ever-growing competition from tablet devices, smartphones, and an upcoming wave of budget consoles like the Ouya"

I did not bother to read any more. Phones and phone games in a box like Ouya is not a growing competition, it is not even in the same league.

It is beyond me how a little faction of gaming reporters have started to think mobile and tablet games is taking over for real games on consoles and pc.

I have no clue what world you people live in, it certainly is not the same world I live in.

i agree with your point. i read the article and the author basically explains why ps+ is a better value than any services out there; therefore it's key to winning next gen. ;) i'll still click agree even though you didnt read it

I stopped reading at that exact point also. Hahaha

If they come up with a service like Netflix but for games it will destroy the competition! With the full Playstation libraby it would be HUGE! (PS1,PS2,PS3,PS4,PSP,PSV!!!)

I don't understand what the author was getting at. Is he saying that PSPlus is their only chance? Is he saying no one will want to buy $60.00 games? Why does he think it was lackluster? In then conference they got to the point what they were going to do and what their goals are with praise from several developers and several games with the promise of more to come. What did he expect, some flashy gimmicky garbage? What did you expect them to do? They even said that they planned for the PS4 to be connected to several different types of hardware which shows that they are in tune with the way the industry is going. So is he saying they don't know what they are doing or is he saying they have a good idea or what.

I am a little tired of these so called journalist writing in such a way that it is complete garbage or hard to understand what your point is or what you are getting at.Can't you write clearly? I can't tell if you are praising or putting down Sony's strategy? Are you praising PSPlus or saying that is the only chance they have? Or are you just putting down the PS4 completely? How are they 'completely ignorant of this coming shift in the marketplace.'? They are making the console multimedia, connecting it to several devices, welcoming indie developers with open arms and making sure the PS4 is socially open to everyone. I don't get it? How is that doing it wrong?

Really cause when I watched sony's conference I was a little worried before it started. And by the time it was over I was like, yes Sony gets it. It's about offering games, features and a community that other platforms and and phones just can't compete with. Exclusive games, easy to develop for but powerful tech that will give us better more unique games, gaikai streaming games, playing games while they download, redesigned ui with the ability to see what others are playing live, the share button recording clips from any game at any time, cross game chat, redesigned controller, and the list goes on and on. Now MS might get it too, we haven't seen what they have up there sleeve. But Sony def gets it. Who knows what conference this guy watched.

I use PS+

my brothers (3 of them) are now using PS+
all new PS3 console owners I know got a PSN card for PS+, even though it was not me personally who pushed them to get it, word of mouth is to get PS+ as it's a complete steal of an investment.

Still questioning if PS+ is worth it? geez.. just give it a try already.

If psplus turns into a Netflix for games than we all win. I'm just worried about the quality of streaming games. Onlive works but the hit in graphic quality bugs me. Hopefully Gaikai figures this thing out.

"As a supposed professional in this here game industry, all manner of family and friends are constantly asking me for my opinion on which console they should purchase."

"For the past five years my answer was always the same: Xbox 360, a platform which had historically been cheaper than the PlayStation 3, with access to a library of games far superior to that of the Nintendo Wii."

I stopped there.
