Will "Unlimited Detail" Voxel Engine Still Revolutionize Gaming? Euclideon Explains Their Absence

GE:

Euclideon's voxel engine, Unlimited Detail, has the potential to change gaming. Mobile phones would compare with consoles. The Wii U wouldn't be stuck with current-gen graphics. And the PS4 and Xbox 720 would easily spit out CGI quality graphics.

But, Euclideon has been quiet on the gaming front since 2011. We reached out to Euclideon to see if they still have their revolutionary engine in the works for gamers.

I'll believe it when I see. For now I'll be skeptical...On live was supposed to revolutionize everything and it flopped hard.

There is a market for everything...but I'm sick of exaggerated or false promises. Between photoshopped game screenshots and just fake Tech demos (aliens: colonial), the internet has made it a lot harder to believe anything that a company has to offer.

I'm done with talk, show your results or stfu. This news was pointless, no show no credit.

It won't revolutionize gaming ever because as soon as you need to animate a 3D object you're going to be in serious trouble.

DeadlyFire4068d ago

I think it could happen, but it requires much more power to actually animate things. Take Crysis series for example. Max settings and ultimate detail on the PC, but some setups get less than 5 fps. Its always possible to get unlimited detail with 1-5 fps, but to get it all going with animations at 30+ fps. That is an achievement. So its a few generations to early for current hardware unless it can utilize something like Gaikai/OnLive as an assist. Bandwidth for that too is still not everywhere.

Gregard4068d ago

And don't forget everything else a game needs to run! AI, Inputs, physics, etc... There is just no way :P

hesido4069d ago

From the looks of it, they've given up on gaming related things. Their tech is still useful on a number of fields, although it is non-gaming related.

solid_warlord4069d ago

There's always problems with using such technology in real time-game world, and its mostly to do with inefficient lack of power in modern consumer based hardware.

It took super computers to get "Avatar" graphics looking real and it was all CGI. Alooooong! way to go from that happening in real time.

Looks like it'd be cool for VR demos and stuff. Too bad it seems to be limited to static scenes with no dynamics or animation for now.

FsterThnFTL3499d ago

Very interested to see the 2 games they say they are working on.

Forn3498d ago (Edited 3498d ago )

Yikes, that looks insanely good. Guess we'll see how it translates to real-world games.

ibrake4naps3498d ago

I used to be so impressed when these guys first showed. I was hoping they'd be the next huge thing. Glad they still exist.

ibrake4naps3498d ago

Their other video says they do animation

THEY'RE BACK!

Also, that whole "surprise" didn't surprise me. I could tell right away those were video game graphics because I'm not blind

starchild3503d ago (Edited 3503d ago )

Yeah, but you have to admit they're damn good. Nothing else looks that good. Then again, nothing ever came of their technology last generation, so let's see if this new technology actually makes it into videogames this time.

BTW this kind of reminds me of the photogrammetry technology that The Astronauts developers used to make The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Cool stuff.

drk_omeg3503d ago (Edited 3503d ago )

Minute 1:25, there is a floatin cross. Before that, yes, I was thinking it was real life video with some tiny frame rates due to the internet.

Fizzler3503d ago

I can't wait to play real life!

AndrewLB3503d ago

I'd like to see this without horrible youtube compression because at the end of the video, the outdoor "nature" scenes were actually quite impressive.

Of course the BS about us not being able to tell the difference was just that, BS. I think this technology does have potential though, especially if it allows game developers to greatly cut back on content creation from scratch.

kwyjibo3503d ago

I have no idea why this is covered in gaming sites. Euclideon make visualisation software for laser-scanning. Their clients are governments, mapping companies, construction companies.

Here's a video of what they actually do - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The reason it's unsuitable for games is that it doesn't handle lighting or animation.

JDW3503d ago

In the video it is stated that they are launching a gaming division in 2015.

Almost a year my ass. Its been well over a year and months after that.

This presentation has very little attention to gaming at all. Maybe one day it could though.

hesido3986d ago

Very impressive. I remember them moving away from gaming into other areas, and they seem to have found their spot... I don't expect them to bring much to Gaming industry tho.
