Opinion: The Games Industry Hates Gamers And It Needs To Change

OPINION: From micro-transactions to gimping used copies, the games industry's increasingly anti-consumer rhetoric has to change. And it could find inspiration in the unlikeliest of places: the music business.

All these companies with old, tired business practices are refusing to change to adapt to an evolving market and instead are infringing on consumer rights and privileges in an attempt to stay relevant.

Micro transactions and DLC are not inherently bad, but they can be when they are being abused solely to make money and at the detriment of the consumer, you'll begin to see the whole industry move toward a "pay to play and pay again" kind of mentality and that in the end will start affecting the quality of the games we buy.

How often do you pay full retail price for a game only to come away feeling as if you haven't gotten the full intended experience only being offered to those willing to purchase the DLC? You can already see this happening with many AAA titles especially those coming from EA and Activision.

Taking a similar approach to that of the music industry may be just what we need while the industry try's to find its feet during these times of change.

Gaming is very unique when compared to the music and movie industry. For music people were getting upset at not having any control of what they could purchase. So you had to spend $10 or more for a full CD when some people just liked a few songs or perhaps just one song. It was the industry's lack of innovation that hurt them to adapt to the consumer. You go to the store and it's now hard to find some music on CD. Most of it is available now in places like iTunes and the quality of the source isn't as good as CD. But at least now you can buy one song or have a quick peek for free. Kind of like a demo for a game.

With movies we are starting to see a major transition now to digital content. It can be hard in some places to actually go rent movies at a real store and get physical content. But a lot of places online rent movies and stream them like Netflix. There are lots of choices for the consumer to get movies even though rental stores are closing.

Where gaming is still lacking is a way to get that content to the consumer the same way such as streaming. We are still in the early stages of streaming gaming in a way consumers will accept. From quality to lag. Movies and music consumers will put up with that more but with gaming we need quick reaction times and the internet can be fickle. Gaikai and OnLive are just the beginning.

I also find gamers to be less accepting of change. They are the least likely to want to go full digital. So the industry is in a transition stage right now and there is some resistance to that. You also don't see the gaming industry being as flexible in giving consumers choices. Why doesn't Call of Duty for example just sell the single player or just the online portion separately? Why don't the major companies offer a rental service?

Instead they feed us with DLC and online codes and DRM. That's why gamers are fighting back. Gamers are also less likely to support the industry when we see such few risks in the market.

On disc DLC, and Microtransactions have nothing to do with hatred towards gamers. That makes ZERO sense. It has everything to do with GREED. But gimping used games is due to them trying to recoup costs back to developers (even if we dont like it).

Hating gamers is another way of saying they are greedy. If the publishers are only interested in gaining as much $$$ as they can for themselves, then it comes at the cost of doing things the gamers do not want: on disc DLC, micro transactions, online passes, and now blocking second hand games.

While I agree that publishers "hate" gamers, gamers themselves also share part of the responsibilty: the rising expectations of AAA games drives up production costs, and ultimately if the gamers keep spending their cash on extra cars and bullets, the publishers will continue to charge.

In the case of poor DMC, I simply can't afford to buy it because the government "hates" me and continues to drive up the price of everyday goods through tax, even though it's largely agreed that the best way of this economic hole is for consumers to spend more.

And where do the devs fit into all of this? They are gamers with a desire - and more importantly the ability - to make the games, yet most of the cut from game sales goes to the publishers.

I don't think the gaming industry hates the gamers. I think the gamers hate the gaming industry. Because they mostly make half-finished games...

well if we dont want to pay the dev for their hard life work then maybe we should all buy used games only and stop playing video games all 2 gether and just start reading more books and workingout and go outside for the first time n 10 years whos!!! with me

Hates gamers? Ridiculous. What business doesn't try to make money? They'll sell us as much as they can. If we buy it, they'll keep selling it. People who pay a subscription to play their games online better not complain about this subject either, because they are at least part of the reason companies are trying to see how how many more things we'll pay extra for.
