3 Things Call of Duty Has to Do to Stay On Top, Part 1: Innovate

Towards the end of 2012, analysts began discussing the fact that Call of Duty sales figures appeared to be trending downward from previous years. This is the first time in the last 4 or 5 years that the words 'trending downward' have come anywhere near this dominant franchise and it gave the industry something to think about.

Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 still made billions of dollars for Activision last year and we're well aware that this year's iteration will do the same. But the fact remains that something is going on. Are people growing tired of the Call of Duty brand? Has the gravy train that is Call of Duty finally come in to station?

All good things have to end sometime and many are beginning to wonder if that day is somewhere in sight for Call of Duty. (Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360)

Telling them to innovate is like teaching an old dog new tricks, why learn how to roll over when they lie down and sleep.why would COD bother putting an effort into changing something if life has been going great. Activision won't learn until sales have dropped and they lose the thing they love the most, money.

I agree. Also, where can they improve? If anything, improvement would move more in the direction of BF3 with more realistic and team based gameplay.

yeah, they won't start innovating until we tell them too.. with our wallets..

in terms of Call of duty treyarch is the most innovative having drivable vehicles and alternate ending, pick 10 system something out of COD while still being in COD its a slow movement in the next they need to go all out and don't reuse he same animations, engine, sounds, environment they need something very different. like space or something.

It doesn't have to do anything. It continues to break sales records year after year.

Activision could shit in a box, throw the Call of Duty name on it, and it would still fly off the shelves.

That's not a good thing, right?

I am in no way a Call of Duty fan, but people thinking the series will suddenly die or be overtaken by Battlefield are kidding themselves.

True, man. Best people can do is try new things and buy what they want.

If they support innovation, then innovation is what devs and pubs will deliver.

You can only milk this cow so hard and long before the teats run dry.

Keep dreaming.

Seeing as how Black Ops 2 broke the sales record set by Modern Warfare 3 by generating $1B in a mere 15 days, I'd say that teat has plenty of milk left in it.

It's call of duty and the formula will remain the same, no matter how many ways they change kill streaks to score streaks and load out options

Same game different number.

I think you can't innovate much on ancient technology (engine)
