Tomb Raider Review [Capsule Computers]

Zac Elawar from Capsule Computers wrote:

"Tomb Raider (2013) is the long overdue reboot for a franchise that so many gamers hold near and dear to their hearts. Lara Croft was the first female icon in gaming; a gender redefining lead who broke the mold and defied all stereotypes. But, Lara lost her way over the years. It’s hard to keep a franchise from becoming stale a decade after its introduction, and that’s what happened to Tomb Raider. But Crystal Dynamics, under their new publisher in Square Enix, ventured to make Lara matter again. How did they succeed?…" (Tomb Raider 2013, Xbox 360) 9/10

Nice and detailed review. I wasn't that keen on any of the preview or review footage I've seen but I don't know... maybe it's actually worth a look at.

It's been getting amazing reviews. I'd say definitely get your hands on it if you can.

Many shit games get amazing reviews!

From what I've seen there's way less interaction and more BORING BORING 'lead by the hand' and 'wanna be movie'...

maybe that's just what I saw in the first level(s) on videos...

Does seem it's getting good reviews for style and story rather than *GAMEPLAY*

oh and lara has a damned annoying voice!

Yeah I've also preordered Monster Hunter, Pandora's Tower, and Gears of War: Judgment. What a month!
ZacE  +   547d ago
To be fair, I was thinking about games coming out the first half of 2013, but yeah this month alone is insane...Judgment was one of my other ones too.

I've been ready to pick this up since I first heard it announced. Looks like my anticipation is well founded! Nice review!

Per-ordered! I haven't really played TR since the 90's but loved it. Nice to see they did such a good job with the reboot.
EbeneezerGoode  +   547d ago
they didn't... reviews say whatever they feel like these days.

Less interaction, tons of QTE (boring) and loads of movie style events and stop/start interaction. That kinda stuff bores me to tears. GIVE ME A GAME!! not a film!

Well I'm pretty sure someone who's played the game and reviewed it would know the details better than any of us who haven't.

Trailers are completely different from what actually playing the game would be like.

Already playing through the campaign. Great game indeed!

Did you play previous Tomb Raiders? I can't make up my mind about this. If it's like previous Tomb Raiders, I know I'd love it, but if it's more action-oriented with simple puzzles, like Uncharted, than I know I won't like it. Is it more like Tomb Raider with plenty of exploration and challenging puzzles or is it more like Uncharted, focused on action, shooting people and cinematic feel?

I'm a couple hours in and it's like a grittier version of uncharted with an upgrade system for skills/weapons and more open level designs...There's a few simple puzzles here and there and a little bit of exploration where you'll be able to find upgrade pieces for your weapons, hunt animals, find artifacts etc. Tomb Raider shares a lot of similarities with Uncharted but the games still great in its own way with its grittiness, rpg elements, and level design.

It's LIKE uncharted but nowhere near as good. Barely any real interaction, loads of hand holding, you don't need to THINK for yourself at all.

It's basically an interactive movie laced with linear pointers and Quick Time Events rather than a proper self paced game.

I'd advise you skip it and not believe a fkin word any review sites write again.

I should have known the 9/10 scores were BS

@EbeneezerGoode What a shame. I don't like games where I don't need to think. Nor such movies or books. Well, guess I'm back to searching through the Indie catalogue.

Thanx 4 info.

I'm a couple hours in the game... Don't believe the hype...

Its a decent game. Tries so much to be like uncharted but it fails... Graphics are not that great as some reviewers say(low res textures and some objects pop ups)... Story is o.k but its downgraded by dull and generic characters, a generic plot like her friend, friends gets captured for a ritual to bring back... Gets boring after a while.

Yeah I too thought that it's going to be an epic adventure after playing in some hours. But it turned out that the story has really a lot in common with Far Cry 3 story. it feels repetitive and already done-before. The gameplay isn't that much deep too. As you mentioned it's like an action movie that you'd probably forget after a couple of days.
