I didn't read the article, but after playing through Dead Space 3 multiple times, I can honestly tell you that you are NOT paying to collect anything by purchasing microtransactions. The microtransactions are for extra resources, I never once needed to purchase anything, even on the higher difficulties. They are there for anyone that wants additional resources. You collect plenty of resources from enemies and by exploring the areas of the game, plus you get 3 scavenger bots that you can send out to collect even more resources for you.
