Gamers XTREME - Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Review (PS3/360): “A Solid, Yet Imperfect Cut”

Glacier928: "Metal Gear Rising is a really neat experiment on the MG universe. Playing as Raiden a few years after the events of MGS4 sets up a cool premise, with a story that unfortunately falls flat at times. The combat is flashy, but a bit too button-mashy to feel like much skill is required. Overall, MGR is a very cool game that’s worth a rental, but at the game’s absurdly short length and a few other issues, it’s hard to recommend spending $60. Again, it’s a good game, but far from perfect." (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, PS3, Xbox 360) 7.0/10

>with a story that unfortunately falls flat at times

I suppose I could see that, but to be honest I thought the story was pretty good, especially for a spin-off.

>The combat is flashy, but a bit too button-mashy to feel like much skill is required.

But you can't button-mash unless you're on easy. You need to know how to parry well, otherwise you're gonna get wrecked.

>Overall, MGR is a very cool game that’s worth a rental, but at the game’s absurdly short length

The story is kinda short, I'll give them that. There's quite a bit of replayability however.

>it’s hard to recommend spending $60.

Unless you're a fan of Platinum's games or MG, yeah I could see it being hard to say that.

>Again, it’s a good game, but far from perfect.

Seems fair. Nice to see someone using a 7 the way it should be used, as a good rating, not 'meh'. That's what a 5 or a 6 is for.

Glad to see someone else understands that a "7" is a good score. On the site under the "About" section, I clarify that anything a "7" or above is certainly worth your time. I even stated that there are games we may score between a 5.0-6.5 due to numerous issues but are still worth checking out.

As for the "button-mashy" comment I made in the review, I did state I played on Normal mode. I just felt like I breezed through it with little effort. To be honest, I only died once in the entire game and that was at the first boss fight during a particular "scene" that I won't spoil for those who didn't play it yet.

This game is an 8 and nothing less. 7 is for an average game this gen, this game is far from average. It's near excellent in my opinion.

@StrawberryDiesel420

As I stated to Brucis, a "7" means it's a very good game with a few issues here and there that bring down the score. If you read the review, I state that I really enjoyed it but also describe every issue the game had. An "average" game for us on the site is between a 5.0-6.5. Ultimately, everyone is entitled their opinion. You think it's near excellent, that's great. However, I respectfully disagree and my review states the game's flaws. MGR is a very good game, no question. It's nowhere near "excellent" though in my opinion.

More of an 8 game to me, but the reasoning behind the 7 score here seams very reasonable to me. Definitely something here for Platinum to build on for a series.
