Sony on PS4 ten-year life cycle: Console cycles could become shorter

Console life cycles could become shorter, according to Sony Computer Entertainment.

When asked whether the PS4 will follow the ten-year lifecycle of previous consoles, UK managing director Fergal Gara said his "gut feel" is that they won't be as long as they have been.

"It'll definitely be a long life cycle and we're planning for the future and the sheer scale of the technology announced certainly shows that it should last many years," he told Digital Spy.

"Ten years, yeah, it's a number that's picked out but I think it's interesting to see the PS2 is just being put to bed now, and that's a lot more than ten years.

"PS3 will continue for some period, and will have an excellent year this year, especially software-wise, it's incredibly well-positioned that stuff that's announced already and more to come as well. We'll keep them all going as long as they are viable."

He continued: "But my own gut feel? The life cycles maybe won't be quite as long in the future as they ha...

yeah, I think 6 years is the longest that a console should run. by then, the tech is always going to be incredibly dated and in need of a next gen leap.

it could run in the background, like the PS2, but even then, I dont think you would exactly call the PS2's last few years "its golden years."

I think you guys are all missing the point. The 10 year cycle isn't the number of years the console is Next Gen. The 10 year cycle is simply how many years the console is on the market. Like the fact the PS2 is just now finally being axed. The PS3 has been out for 6 years and some odd months. It will be another 4+ before it's phased out completely. that misguided idea might be his "gut feel" & he's not talking life cycle but rather how long it is until we see Next Gen consoles release.

When the PS3 released I said we'd see, hear about PS4 in 2013 at the earliest. So I definitely agree with everyone in that we should see a Next Gen console every, about 6 years. Depending on tech, advances, etc. So say every 5-7 years. But again, just because a new console is on the market doesn't mean the last gens life cycle ends.

short cycle good for the consumer not so good for the company. sony the company as a whole are not in a favourable position to be making big investments whenever they please.

Life cycles should be around the 10 year mark. As you can tell, the tech leap isn't as great as it used to be.

Keep that tech current and up to date. Nice Sony, good Sony. :D

5 years of life cycle at the least is good number for me.

The same as this gen would be fine. I don't want to shell out 500+ dollars on a new console every 2-3 years. PC elitists, stay away because I already know what you want to say lol.

A new console should be put out every 6 years (Past that the tech is very outdated). With the previous generation being supported for 2 more years max.
