Sony on PS4 ten-year life cycle: Console cycles could become shorter

Console life cycles could become shorter, according to Sony Computer Entertainment.

When asked whether the PS4 will follow the ten-year lifecycle of previous consoles, UK managing director Fergal Gara said his "gut feel" is that they won't be as long as they have been.

"It'll definitely be a long life cycle and we're planning for the future and the sheer scale of the technology announced certainly shows that it should last many years," he told Digital Spy.

"Ten years, yeah, it's a number that's picked out but I think it's interesting to see the PS2 is just being put to bed now, and that's a lot more than ten years.

"PS3 will continue for some period, and will have an excellent year this year, especially software-wise, it's incredibly well-positioned that stuff that's announced already and more to come as well. We'll keep them all going as long as they are viable."

He continued: "But my own gut feel? The life cycles maybe won't be quite as long in the future as they ha... (Industry, PS4, Sony)

yeah, I think 6 years is the longest that a console should run. by then, the tech is always going to be incredibly dated and in need of a next gen leap.

it could run in the background, like the PS2, but even then, I dont think you would exactly call the PS2's last few years "its golden years."

I think you guys are all missing the point. The 10 year cycle isn't the number of years the console is Next Gen. The 10 year cycle is simply how many years the console is on the market. Like the fact the PS2 is just now finally being axed. The PS3 has been out for 6 years and some odd months. It will be another 4+ before it's phased out completely. that misguided idea might be his "gut feel" & he's not talking life cycle but rather how long it is until we see Next Gen consoles release.

When the PS3 released I said we'd see, hear about PS4 in 2013 at the earliest. So I definitely agree with everyone in that we should see a Next Gen console every, about 6 years. Depending on tech, advances, etc. So say every 5-7 years. But again, just because a new console is on the market doesn't mean the last gens life cycle ends.

short cycle good for the consumer not so good for the company. sony the company as a whole are not in a favourable position to be making big investments whenever they please.

Life cycles should be around the 10 year mark. As you can tell, the tech leap isn't as great as it used to be.

they havent showed us anything yet.

The same as this gen would be fine. I don't want to shell out 500+ dollars on a new console every 2-3 years. PC elitists, stay away because I already know what you want to say lol.

A new console should be put out every 6 years (Past that the tech is very outdated). With the previous generation being supported for 2 more years max.

4-5 years at most. Been playing new games since last year on my xbox and they all look like shit. No fun to play anymore

I didnt know in order to have fun you need really good graphics, if thats the case dont buy rockstar games hell even cod games, the reason why they are "no fun" is that game devs gets lazy at the end of every cycle, and when new consoles hit, realise great games apparently come from no where.

I personally have a lot more fun when I'm being wowed by graphics along the way. When I first started playing video games (when games were new) part of the fun was the amazement that I'm actually controlling what was on the screen. The same still holds today.
I don't care what anyone says, games are more fun when the graphics are amazing.
It's just like sex, even bad sex is good when the girl is hot enough.

A renewal every 5 years sounds good to me, I mean come on if people can buy 500-700 USD phones every year then surely 400-500 USD for a 5+ year investment is doable.

I don't mind shorter cycles but I want to see a significant difference between generations. I won't buy a new console for a premium price 2, 3 or even 4 years after the previous was released.

I see no problem in the way it works now. My PS3 is looking old at this point but it's still a more-than-viable gaming platform. I don't see that changing for a few years.

Now with the PS4, I put my Nostradamus hat on and see it being viable for a very long time. I see that only because of the social features; the graphics are beautiful but they will fade (relatively) in time and I think it's going to be social hardcore games that thrive this generation. Games that let you link with your friends in ways we haven't seen before. New levels of competition, new levels of collaboration, all together deeper interaction with the gaming community. That gives this generation some legs. At least that's how I see it.

I love that even though I bought my 360 2 years in, I have been able to enjoy 4 years before the next xbox was even announced. I have enjoyed this generation very much.
DarkZane  +   517d ago
I say release a new console every 5 years, but support to old one 10 years.
Genki  +   517d ago
That would be a colossal mistake. As games get more complex, we naturally start to see diminishing returns on the results, ranging from graphics to physics, and content. Let enough time pass so that the differences are decidedly superior.
