In no way will we forget about PS3, says Sony

Sony will in no way forget about the PlayStation 3, despite the fact its successor the PS4 will launch later this year, Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Fergal Gara has told VideoGamer.com.

"I suppose it's my biggest challenge this year but a great problem to have, which is in no way should we or will we say forget about PS3 because PS4 is coming," said Gara. (PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Sony Computer Entertainment)

That's great to hear and all but what about this used games debacle? and if it is even at all possible, just exactly how will we be able to play our PS3 games on the PS4?

You don't play your PS3 games on PS4. Simples. Unless that gaikai (spelling?) works out as planned but even then you'd have to repurchase them and stream them.

Don't know why you're getting disagrees. That's exactly how it will work from what Sony has said.

Apparently, not even PSN games will be compatible, so those of us with hundreds of dollars tied up to digital content will be severely disincentivized from buying into PS4.

Not really it is called a new gen. Keep your PS3 and stop being entitled to everything. Did you VHSs work with your DVDs? No. This is a completely different architecture and they had to do it. The Cell was a backwards developmental tool. They have done everything right. No problem keeping my PS3 around. Tons of PSN games and yeah it sucks a little but I already rebought a few on Steam.
MagneticDeath  +   515d ago
We won't. Not a big deal imo the SNES didnt play Nes games and is one of the best consoles of all time. I still have a PS2 kicking around and never play it. I'll be too busy playing PS4 games come this winter.
muttley65  +   515d ago
what people fell to realize kazu said ps3 is the ALL in one console why is the ps4 not holding up that promise?? meaning we should still be able to play ps1,ps2,ps3 games on ps4 without loading from GAIKEI CLOUD service. yeah, i know it would cost to much to play all 4 console games but then it would be worth 650.00
instead if you want to play ps1 games you need ps1,ps2,ps3 consoles to play those games thats crazy.

@mttley65 cause they said the ps3 was not the ps4 and even though they said that with the ps3 how many of you actually still own the orginal ps3 that is the all in one i bet not many. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I GOT TO KEEP SAYING THIS BUT IF ITS THAT BIG OF A DEAL KEEP YOUR PS3.solves the problem.
user3915800  +   515d ago
Say and do are 2 different things, I ignored the comment and go back to play games. I will not forget the PS3 lol... Palm raced, going back to fire emblem awakening.

Perhaps you guys should wait until we actually know what works and how before you cement our assumptions as facts...
cedaridge  +   514d ago
Just keep your ps3!
zerocrossing  +   514d ago
It died on me...

Well I imagine the PS3 will get a price cut shortly after the PS4 is released, so if they don't decide to incorporate BC it shouldn't be a problem.

We love you sony, for everything ! You're the best publisher in the industry !
Elwenil  +   515d ago
I don't think anyone expect Sony to abandon the PS3 anytime soon. They want to get the most out of each console and know that not everyone will rush to buy the new one. After seeing the support they gave to the PS1 and PS2, it's only natural that they support the PS3 for a similar amount of time as it seems profitable to them.
givemeshelter  +   515d ago
You have to hand it to Sony. Kudos

ps3 what? oh sorry forgot about it for a sec.
nevin1  +   515d ago
What about PSN+? So people that upgraded to PS4, the only way they can take advantage of free PS3 games is keeping their PS3.
LOGICWINS  +   515d ago
Not necessarily. If you have a Vita, all those free games you got on Plus should be playable on the Vita via Gaikai. This is why they said they had "big plans" for Vita later in the year. The Vita will LITERALLY function as a portable PS3.

The question is, how many PS3 games can they get on Gaikai when Gaikai launches?
EffectO  +   515d ago
No BC tells otherwise.
matrixman92  +   515d ago
of course they wont..they didnt include backwards compatability, probably just so people would hold onto their ps3's. Now i have the mindset of..."i need to get everything i want to play on ps3 done before ps4 comes out". no way am i keeping 3 when 4 comes out
evilhasitsway  +   514d ago
i will keep mine do to the fact you wont get much if you sell it exspecially to gamestop for trade in or anything your better off spending the extra cash then selling you beloved ps3.
Pillsbury1  +   515d ago
It's a different architecture, unless they put a ps3 inside ps4 they cannot do it. My ps3 will sit side by side with my ps4, with games like the last of us there is still a lot of life left in ps3.
brianunfried  +   515d ago
I like that Sony keeps supporting their older consoles. I found it a little disturbing that Microsoft completely abandoned the Xbox the day the Xbox 360 came out. Tells a lot about a company and their the faith in their own product. It was also a complete disrespect to their customers, but they keep coming back.

Xbox customers are like that. They keep coming back no matter how bad a deal they are getting.
evilhasitsway  +   514d ago
and they will probley do the same this time around.
SlyFamous02  +   515d ago
They didnt forget about the PS2, there is no reason to believe that they will forget about the PS3, and I think the games that will release on the PS4, will release on the PS3 and it will still look great.
boldstarr  +   515d ago
This is easy, i have 2 PS3's one Phat and a slim and i have a Vita which i enjoy alot...

Im ready PS4!!!!
aquamala  +   515d ago
If gaikai work as advertised... What would i want to keep ps1-ps3 consoles and games? Might as well sell them when they still have some value
Hicken  +   514d ago
Because some people like to play their old games?

I still pop in a PS1 game or two once a month or so. I do the same for my PS2 games. And when I have a PS4, I'll STILL play my PS3 games.

Can't really figure out this mentality of some gamers that old games are suddenly worthless as soon as the next gen comes out. Hell, these days, people finish a game in a week, call it great, but never play it again. I don't get it.
blakstarz  +   515d ago
Well, they said the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle and I believe them, the PS3 is not done yet...the PS2 is still around, so the PS3 isn't going no place, hell, The Last of US is still coming, so the PS3 still has its legs to stand on.
Its a hardware company, they know what they're doing.....
JAM_brz  +   515d ago
What I really want to know is: the PS3 7.1 Virtual Surround headset will work in the new PS4? They talked about Move working, but not the Dual Shock 3. And the others devices, such my Headset? Would be nice if that work.

I wont forget my ps3 either even though my son is expecting to get our ps3 in his room when we get the ps4 for the living room, im still not sure about that one.
Xer0_SiN  +   515d ago
why would sony forget the ps3? the playstation(s) are optimized for a 10 year life cycle. i mean, the ps2 era JUST ended. the ps3 will be the same, and so on.
j-blaze  +   514d ago
lol i'll forget it soon after i get my PS4 or after playing VersusXIII and Beyond
stefan771  +   514d ago
I'll still be using my PS3 for some time after PS4 launches
BladerunnerZX  +   514d ago
considering I bought a new 250 gig PS3 super slim to take advantage of all the free PSplus games I will be playing and using my PS3 for years.

Another reason I support Sony is their commitment to supporting their game consoles for the long term.

Sony just recently stopped supporting the PS2 and it did not feature online apps like Netflix wich the PS3 is the number 1 device for netflix.

The PS3 will be around for a long time.

Yeah, they won't let the PS3 just die; and I'm glad they don't. As Gara said, due to the best ever value price point, by the time the PS4 comes out it will be the perfect time to get a PS3, especially if you can't/don't want to afford a PS4, but still want to have great games and a huge library of titles with new games to come due to the fact that many new games will be released on both PS3 and PS4 like Watch_Dogs or Beyond: Two Souls (likely).

And about Vita, it's kinda funny, but the PS4 event actually made me want to get a Vita more than any Vita event or the last two E3 press conferences. I hope they'll make a PS4/Vita 'premium' bundle. I'd get it and I'm sure they will do one.

I guess the ps3 is going to the bedroom or the kids' room.

Don't forget Sly Cooper, Bioshock Infinite and PS exclusive Puppeteer.

Plus have you played indie/downloadable games like The Cave , Limbo, Tales of Monkey Island, Sam and Max and PS exclusives like Papa & Yo, The Unfinished Swan & Datura?

It was one of the joys of the PS2 that it continued to have games on it in 2007 making the PS3's line up look a bit less interesting. Unfortunately it wasn't such a good advert for the PS3. Maybe they need to start doing dual releases like Nintendo and Micorosft have done where some games gets a release on both the PS3 and PS4 until the PS4 has sufficient buyers.
