The debate: should Mass Effect 4 be a prequel?

OPM UK's David Meikleham and Phil Iwaniuk use their words to settle whether Mass Effect 4 should be a prequel, or distance itself from Shep’s story entirely. Fight! (BioWare, EA, Mass Effect 3, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

I say NOOOOOOOO. Example = Tomb Raider/DMC. Don't want that to happen to Mass Effect.

Those games are REBOOTS - not prequels.
DeadlyFire  +   421d ago
While true they both take a prequel and throw it into the first game coming up in the reboots. Which to me seems like a very bad idea.
3-4-5  +   420d ago
Yea it should just be another group of people in another similar part of their galaxy or something like that but keep the same feeling at the first 3 games.

I've seen some poor reboots...
Mass Effect Prequel could be a three part series I would play.
Wanting a new adventure next gen.

They just want to do a prequel so that they don't have to deal with all the sh*t that ME 3's ending and all other choices that the players have made throughout the other two games could cause. Imagine creating a true sequel that takes all those previous choices into account.

But it'd be too much to ask that from Bioware I guess... Those poor guys always work so hard, they deserve a break.

Who says they want to do a prequel ?

Also, creating a prequel where no choice would change anything in the future since the canon is already established by the Mass effect trilogy wouldn't give much major choices eitehr, or they'd have to canonize one of the ending to fit with the beginning of ME1... in that case, why don't we let them canonize one of the endings of ME3 instead ?

After all, it's not like all multiple endings game carry on your decisions to the next game. They can just add a trigger that would canonize one of the endings, and the problem would be solved. eg: In the next ME game, there could be an admiral Shepard who wouldn't exist if you didn't have the high EMS destroy ending in ME3.

It wouldn't be the first time either : Shepard could die at the end of ME2, and that outcome was scrapped in ME3 (or the Warden could die in DA and was somehow alive anyway in DA Awakening... and those 2 examples were within the same story arc; and people didn't brandish their fists years in advance cause there was a chance this could happen). It would be completely unrealistic to expect all the endings to unfold differently in the next game, it would basically require at least 4 different games.

Also, when you think about it, about 50% of the players finished the game, and afaik, most of them chose destroy since it's constantly the most popular by far in polls (cause Shepard lives);

So, out of the few that remains, how many will
-still care enough about the story
-still have their saves from the past games
-and at the same time have only one Shepard to import
All that in a few years ? so, yeah... I'd rather have them starting with a beginning that is mostly the same for everyone, can be expanded upon, and yet allows most players to import at least one of their save; rather than trying to satisfy everyone while importing saves that completely change the face of the galaxy and would make it impossible for them.

I would like to explore some of commander shepards prior missions before the collectors and reapers.
aliengmr  +   421d ago
I really think they should give the franchise a break. Work on something new, make it at least look like they are capable of taking risks. Then it won't seem like they are just milking the franchise because they don't have any better ideas.
Irishguy95  +   420d ago
Yeah new franchise. Mass effect and Dragon Age both came out of trying new franchises out. Keep going for new ones please.
Hydralysk  +   420d ago
EA isn't going to let Bioware shelve Mass Effect until they've milked it dry.
Aloren  +   420d ago
They're working on a new ip, I think. So, with SWTOR, they're working on 4 different IP, with a 2 year cycle for each, that's fairly reasonable; could be better, but could be worse.
medman  +   420d ago
I would prefer it not to be a prequel, but ultimately, if the story is great it really wouldn't matter much. There is enough variety in the Mass Effect galaxy for Bioware to draw from to make a phenomenal prequel. Whatever direction they choose to go in, I'm just hoping I will love the next game as much as I enjoyed ME1, 2, and 3.
contradictory  +   420d ago
it would be cool if it would be based on the first contact war or slightly after that
Zichu  +   420d ago
With prequels, they should call them something else and keep them separate from the numbered series.
Sketchy  +   420d ago
I would prefer they take the elder scroll route and make it hundreds of years in the future. You could still have some of the characters that live thousands of years return, but replace everyone else. Then you can bring the Yahg in as a space faring species.
girevik  +   420d ago
who were the Yahg again?
girevik  +   420d ago
I got a disagree for asking a genuine question. Oh silly N4G...
Hydralysk  +   420d ago
That wouldn't really make a difference...

*SPOILERS*

Depending on the ending the galaxy has either destroyed all AI, come under the control of Reaper Shepard and his ultra powerful Reaper army, or every single being is a synthetic-organic hybrid.

*END SPOILERS*

I don't think any amount of time would reduce the impact those choices must have had on a future galaxy, if they make anything but a prequel it'd need to have a some kind of canon ending.

i rather have a sequel set thousands of years into the future, the only problem is how to adapt the endings
Sketchy  +   420d ago
Since it's thousands of years in the future, they can be as vague as possible. Some vague mentioning of this Reaper, and a man/woman name Shepard in a history book and leave it at that. Then your character can go about their own daily live or adventure that has nothing to do with the last three parts. It could work.
C-Thunder  +   420d ago
I think it should be a completely different game set in the same established universe. I'd even prefer it not even play the same. Give me a true open galaxy and full flight controls, maybe coop crews instead of AI only. Customizable characters, species and all.

They could do so much with what they've created, I just hope they don't let the previous games dictate the new ones direction.
Hydralysk  +   420d ago
You might want to keep an eye on Star Citizen.
C-Thunder  +   420d ago
Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.
Drakesfortune  +   420d ago
if it is prequel then i wont be playing, i hate prequels!
TemplarDante  +   420d ago
I want a sequel..
After the end of ME3...
Lets just bury what happend.. and move on. New team, new ship, newer threat.
*Spoiler*
Remnants of the makers of the AI that built the reapers.
Prequel will mess around with the canon. I hate it when prequels limit directions in choices etc as it would then have to tie in with ME1,2,3.
