Yoshida cannot yet confirm region-free PS4

PlayStation 3 is a region-free games console. You can import games from all around the world and play them no matter what region your system. According to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, Sony cannot yet confirm if PlayStation 4 will boast the same capability.

It seems that Sony's PR department needs to get its act together a bit. I don't say that to be controversial, but, unless this information is intentionally being withheld, it sounds like Yoshida simply doesn't know rather than being unwilling to share. This, and backwards compatibility, are two issues I'd love to see answered soon.

People are making it look like a drama cos Sony doesny want to spill everything at once

I retract my statement actually lol.

LOL_WUT1736d ago

Maybe its something thats being looked at? Or it might be discussed at E3 who knows.

As for the backwards compatibility if you saw the presentation they talked about how Gaikai could one day enable the Ps4 to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. Also I think it was mentioned already that the PS4 won't be able to support PS3 disc based or downloaded games.

SoapShoes1736d ago

Dude they don't need to answer this crap till E3 and obviously not everything is finalized. It was the same with the WiiU and 360 before they launched, we had to wait for every detail.

BC and RF are the two LEAST of my worries. No Reselling used games?, Pay to (basic) play online? were far more important imo and one of those seems to have been answered at least (used games can be used/sold - finger's crossed).

Now all they need to tell me is that yes I CAN play online in a basic fashion at least, for FREE and I'm sold on the PS4.

I have 2 PS3s here I couldn't care less about BC frankly.

Region free? Slightly more important for importing but not a deal breaker.

ziggurcat1736d ago

sony's already confirmed that used games are playable on the PS4.

it was an idiotic rumour to begin with (i.e. anti-used games).

EbeneezerGoode1736d ago

@ziggurcat You should recheck your sources. See latest article on it. As said it's still a 'finger's crossed' scenario at the moment (apparently up to publishers but the tech MAY exist in the PS4 to be used at will).

No way am I'm buying games at the same prices we've always paid (high) if we can't even recoup a little by selling them on in time. Slash game prices if they want to play that game!

Every Sony console has been region free, why stop now? I love playing Japanese games that have little to no chance of being localized. If they release more games from Japan more often in EU/NA, then I guess it won't be as bad. But I doubt they would do that.

nolifeking1736d ago

I don't remember Ps1 or 2 being region free. I bought way too many swap magics for that to be true.

Godchild10201736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

You are right. I never had to import games from the PS1/PS2 days nor did I have the money to import. But also back then we seen more games localized for the PS1/PS2.

I was thinking more PS3, PSP and Vita. So, I guess that is not every console.

first1NFANTRY1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

hahaha swap magic was the buzinizzzz

nolifeking1736d ago

No problem, you just had me thinking I spent money that I have shouldn't. But I should have known with the store in my area. GameMania for anyone In California.

KingKelloggTheWH1736d ago

Wasnt the Vita region free?
If so,then no worries.

r211736d ago

The vita is still region free :D Sony, dont break the trend now, make the PS4 region free.

majiebeast1736d ago

I think we will know at E3 but psvita is region free so im betting the ps4 is aswell.

Reverent1736d ago

I think it's safe to say it will be region-free.
