What to expect from tomorrow's PS4 event (realistically)

GameZone's Matt Liebl writes: "We're just a day away from the eagerly awaited PlayStation event where Sony is widely expected to reveal the PlayStation 4. Weeks ago, Sony teased us with a brief video titled “#PlayStation2013”, along with a headline that read: “See the Future.” Of course, that's pretty vague. The future can mean a lot of things, but what will see? Assuming the event is indeed dedicated to the PlayStation 4 unveiling, let's take a look at what we can realistically expect Sony to reveal." (PS4, Sony)

I think that online play will not be free for the PS4 and that is good, just make the social aspects as good as Xbox Live.

Or they'll keep it free and make the social aspects as good as live, which, if you ask me, is basically adding party chat.

Or they will run a profitable online business like Microsoft and charge a premium to help pay for the Gaikai purchase. Sorry, I think from a business standpoint. Sony clearly sees that Microsoft is making lucrative $ from Xbox Live and that consumers are willing to pay for the premium service.

Never going to happen. Every indication and trend from Sony shows that online will remain free.
riverstars86  +   744d ago
I just don't see it happening despair, there is too much money on the table for Sony to give up if they don't charge a premium to play online on the PS4. They see Microsoft bringing in over $1 billion dollars a year of pure profit from Xbox Live, don't you think that Sony wants to make the shareholders of their struggling company more money? I see no problem in paying this price as long as the service and features are top notch. Remember, we are investing in the future of Sony.

@imtheman2013
I agree that most people would pay for Xbox Live if online was free, but that is exactly why Xbox Live will never allow free online play. But everybody will continue to pay for Xbox Live, these people are enjoying the service and feel they are getting value for their money. We may think that it is a good deal, but millions of consumers do. Clearly the strategy of charging for Xbox Live is sustainable, it's been proven the last 10 years that it is a highly successful and profitable business model. You have to be naive to think that Sony doesn't want all that money that Microsoft receives from Xbox Live.

They're only willing to pay it because Live is required to play multiplayer games with friends. I bet that if they made it free to play with friends, half the people paying for live would cease. Live really doesn't offer anything outside of multiplayer, and when the only choice is to pay the fee, then of course people will do it; that only makes it profitable for so long, until people realize they shouldn't need to pay for something like that.

And obviously what Sony is doing is profitable with PS+, otherwise they wouldn't offer the service at all.

You're watching it from a purely monetary gain point of view but that's not all there is to consider. You have to take into account public perception from ps users, we're cheap, we sparingly buy games, complain a lot when free things don't work well and always bash xbox live fees. You really think that ps fans and users will accept all of a sudden in the 4th generation of ps consoles, against what Sony keeps saying(never pay for online) a fee for online?

The next thing to consider is that you can bet your ass ms will come out top of their game with online and unless Sony can definitively say they will have the better seevice(ms experience with software and online says otherwise) then it will just be a choice of the lesser of two evils and ms will win that.

Finally Sony has been pushing ps+ a lot further than I'm sure most people expected. It comes as a secondary premium service to the already free online one. It tries to be different in what it offers compared to ms for the same price(cheaper now) and it has found a good market, that means if online is pay to play then why would you want to supplement the cost with ps+ afterwards.

Even though Sony may gain some extra income with charging online the losses from drop in sales of both consoles and consequently games will be farfar ggreater if they charge for online.
