Seeing the Future: Sony Needs a Strong Vision for PlayStation 4

Whereas the PS3 tried to integrate an internet browser and media storage, and alienated consumers in the process, the next PlayStation faces the challenge of incorporating not just those things, but also casual gaming and cloud streaming; mobile connectivity and social networking; on-demand TV, touch, sensitivity, motion sensitivity; digital downloads, online play, offline play - all of these things while still remaining, at heart, a machine for playing AAA videogames.

It's an incredibly daunting prospect which, if not handled properly, could threaten Sony's foothold in the living room console market.

Like I said before Sony can not afford to see console gaming die. Like Gatts of Berserk, Sony will lay everything down the line to make sure console gaming flourish if not stay healthy.

Sony has a clear vision of where video games are going.

Bungie and Epic Games saw it too when they decided to make games for PlayStation.
Valve, Irrational Games, EA, Bioware, Crytek saw it when they pledge support for PlayStation back in 2011.

Sony has turned things around to the right direction.

"Sony will lay everything down "

Yes that is called a smack down..

Valve saw it and are now building steam box.

Time for steam to jump off windows completely before microsoft start messing with the freedom of PC gaming.

They also pledge support for the Xbox 360 and the PC. Your comment is irrelevant. Sony will try and create a more seamless experience across platforms that support Playstation titles. That is why they acquired Gaika and why they also support Android. The money is on trying to branch out to more devices. This is an area that will eventually hurt Nintendo.

Austin, were you there from 2006-2010

The above mentioned devs and pubs were already on the 360 & PC exclusive games bandwagon during those times and on the fence and watching whether the PS3 will sink or swim before that crucial E3 2011.

on 2010
>Bungie announced they are going multi-plat
>Epic Games announced that they are making Bulletstorm for PS3 because they are fed up with 360 & PC piracy
> EA said on E3 that the PS3 was "on fire" and made a special exclusivity partnership on all their major games with Sony on PS3 and Bioware announced they will be making Mass Effect on PS3
> Gabe Newell of Valve apologized to everybody at E3 2010 for saying bad things about Sony and PS3 and tried to make amends by making Steam PS3 compatible and Portal 2 on PS3 "the best version"

so on and so forth

It was very relevant then and now.

MikeMyers1762d ago

Again, that isn't very relevant. Insomniac is also going multiplat, that too doesn't mean much for the PS4's vision does it?

The PS2 had all the support they could handle so it's not like Sony didn't have the support needed to make a system with good vision based on developer support before. This article is based on competing in todays times and how gaming has changed and how the PS4 fits into that.

The ps4 will run on blessed water from the Vatican.

Just add some water from Lourdes when it breaks down =D

"Sony Needs a Strong Vision for PlayStation 4"

The funny thing is the PS3 does many of those things and at heart is a machine for AAA video games, I wouldn't imagine the PS4 being anything less

olLANDSHARKlo1763d ago

Says the guy busted by microsoft for pirating games. Still got the same name on PS3, guess PSN don't care. Free service= junk service.

Rainstorm811763d ago (Edited 1763d ago )

Interesting ...cause the free service is practically pirate proof while the paid service has rampant piracy.......go figure

No go back under your bridge and worship your 360, while I enjoy ALL of gaming

ziggurcat1763d ago

"and alienated consumers in the process"

alienated, how? is the author still butthurt over otherOS, which *no one* used?

Conzul1763d ago

Removing it was a douchey move on Sony's part. I'm a fan, don't get me wrong, but you are absolutely wrong when you say no one used it.

kikizoo1763d ago

Sony only needs smart gamers and fair competition (without lies, like this gen)
