I disagree I think it's overrated and, although a nice bonus when implemented properly, superfluous to the reason I buy a new console.

Gamer19821975d ago

I agree its a nice bonus but if Sony use Gakai do we really want to buy our games again for backwards compatibility? As you will certainly have to! Also the new ps4 won't come with CELL so it wont support ps3 games without serious emulation.

I got a PS3 already and when PS4 drops it will be worth very little so no point in trading it in towards ps4 so therefore no point in backwards compatibility.

However if the new xbox supports it and the PS doesn't the xbox fanboys will make out like its a really important feature when its really not just like with cross gaming chat. They did when the original 360 launched and eventually people just gave up with them.

We won't necessarily have to pay again if the PS4 can just recognise a genuine PS1/2/3 disc it could unlock the game on Gaikai, as long as the disc is in.

I agree that it will be blown massivley out of proportion if one console has it and the other doesn't.

It's not important to me since i'm buying the consoles to play new software

Sony/MS + 3rd parties make too much off HD remakes to care about bc IMO.

SlapHappyJesus1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Microsoft really didn't have their hands in the whole HD remake craze this generation.

The only one I can think of is Halo:Anniversary, and that was them actually redoing the game in a new engine and adding some extras.

They did all right, not great, with their BC support for the 360.

I think the xbox is the one most likely to do backwards compatibility. Depends on the complications that comes with changing their primary disc format next generation.

GalacticEmpire1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Only a select few xbox titles work (without a hitch) on the 360, MS didn't really support BC as much as they should have. They kind of lost interest and dropped it like they dropped the Xbox.

There will be no HD remakes of ps3/360 games on ps4/720 though.. As why would people buy them? Unless the consoles have some amazing feature we cannot live without on our old games. But then would they be compatible? HD remakes worked as we got better graphics and games that wernt available anymore thats not the case this time around. We had great graphics this gen.

From a Business standpoint No. From a Consumer Standoint Yes.

MightyMatt1011975d ago

In my opinion it doesn't really matter for Microsoft but I feel like its almost a must for Sony. Something about the ridiculous collection of solid games spanning all the way back to PS1 warrants the ability for backwards comparability to be featured in the PS4
