Nintendo Land Has Failed In its Mission to Become the Next Wii Sports

GenGAME writes: "Now that the Wii U launch has come and gone, and the extent of the system’s loss of momentum in 2013 is finally visible, I think it’s safe to say that Nintendo Land was no Wii Sports successor. The game failed to drive sales in any way that even remotely resembled the Wii Sports phenomenon."

Nintendo Land is a great game, but from a business perspective, yeah, it's not doing it's job.

Wii Sports launched with the Wii as a sort of "Look at this! This is the kind of stuff the Wii has to offer" game, and people just GOT it. It clicked.

Nintendo Land does the same thing, showing off lots of fun ways to use the fancy new GamePad, but it's not drawing as much attention. It's arguably a better game, but it's not making the purpose of the system sink in with most people.

OccludedGamer4075d ago

I would say it fell short on more than just a business standpoint too.

I agree it is a great game, I managed to sink a considerable amount of time into the Donkey Kong game, but I haven't found much me and my friends would sink much time into together.

Wii Sports had Golf and Bowling, both of which got played many times with groups on my system and I haven't seen anything on NL that would fit that goal either, despite having tried all the MP games too.

jaymart2k4075d ago

The only reason Wii Sports was popular was because Bowling.

Everything els sucked or was meh.

StrawberryDiesel4204075d ago

You suck, Tennis and Golf were fun as hell.

atthemags4076d ago

Nintendoland will never be as viral as Wii Sports--it's not included with EVERY system sold. That said, it's not a killer app by any stretch of the imagination, and many of the "attractions" have little appeal.

DA_SHREDDER4076d ago

yeup, they screwed up by not adding it for every system. Which is a shame cause alot of kids wont ever enjoy it. My kids love it!

stragomccloud4075d ago

It's true. It's really true. They do lack appeal. The games are incredibly fun, some of the funnest games I've played in years. However, they lack all kinds of appeal, even watching people play doesn't look all that fun. It isn't until your hanging out with your friends playing the game that one realizes how awesome it is. Unfortunately, that's not good enough from a business perspective.

PopRocks3594076d ago

Wii Sports was a far simpler endeavor. Smaller in scope, smaller in ambition and because people don't talk about the gamepad in the same context as the Wiimote, there wasn't much of a chance of people being as largely wowed by the console.

That all said I think Nintendo Land is a vastly superior game, and it's a shame that many of the people who played and enjoyed Wii Sports may not even experience it.

Would have been nice if at least ONE of the two games had online play though.

VikTheStampede4075d ago (Edited 4075d ago )

I agree, not adding a bit of online was a mistake.

That being said, it is sad that in terms of sales nintendo land isnt close to wii sports since it is in my opinion so much more.

DwightOwen4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Nintendo needs to release Wii U Sports.

jaymart2k4075d ago

That golf tech demo where they put the controller on the ground & you swing the wiimote & the ball jumps from the ground to tv was awesome.

Shame it was only a tech demo cause they should really make it.

Mario Golf Wii U anyone?

Venoxn4g4075d ago

I would love eshop release of tennis and other great games improved, a collection maybe

N4g_null4075d ago

Nintendo land should have a wii sport like update with online. Yet it's a huge game already.

Thepcz4076d ago

wii sport did.

i dont think i will buy nintendo land if i get a wiiu.

SamPao4075d ago

You should if you plan on playing with friends, Its an absolut blast playing together :)

jaymart2k4075d ago

I got it with the system. Shame I have no friends or family around to play with.

I'm missing out on 3-4 mini games :(

If they're not important enough to be held on their own official storefront then they're not important enough to give your money to Nintendo.

Buy these, physically, used or simply emulate them.

This article comes off as nothing more than advertising games that Nintendo, themselves, don't care to offer you... buy now!

ocelot07781d ago

Wait hang on where all the outrage? I swear when Sony tried to do this with PS3 last year. There was outrage from all corners of the gaming universe.

Why does no one care Nintendo is doing it?

MadLad781d ago (Edited 781d ago )

There has been.
A lot of it.

Simply type in "3DS" in Google and tell me what you see.

ocelot07781d ago

Oh I have a fair few websites reporting on it. But where is the outcry on here? I remember their was 2-3 approved top voted articles when Sony announced they where closing the PS3 store. All slating them and not caring about customers.

I should of worded it better. Where is all the outrage on n4g?

MadLad781d ago (Edited 781d ago )

N4G is a fanboy site, mainly frequented by only Sony.
Microsoft is their direct competition, so you'll typically only see articles that are made to rile up those fanbases.

Nintendo does it's own thing, so they're rarely brought up, aside from their fans. The most you get is the same typical two or three posters claiming Nintendo is only for infants.

If you come to N4G for educated discourse and reasonable discussion, this isn't the place. Sad as it is.

pietro1212781d ago

It's lame that it is shutting down. Now I feel rushed buying all the rpgs I missed out on the system.

XxINFERNUSxX780d ago

You guys know that even archive.org has 3DS roms, and all other console roms. I'm downloading 846GB of 3DS roms and will add the best games to my soon to be soft modded New 3DS 😁. Might as well throw in DS and other emulators in there to. Guys this would be the best way to play and enjoy the 3DS. Just need to buy a bigger micro SD card and format it to FAT32, which you can if it's even 256GB or larger there are ways.

XxINFERNUSxX780d ago

This should help if you want to soft mod it excellent guide and up to the latest and probably last 3DS firmware update: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Switch Sports Will Never Live Up To Wii Sports

The Switch just isn't equipped for a killer sports title like the Wii was

A lot of the points made here are true, yet let's give it a chance, because like the author said, the Wii was a motion control console and everyone did view it as such while the switch is not, so the way people view the game determines how much they invested in it, so again let's give it a chance and see

Ratty793d ago

Wii sports was truly atrocious and you're saying Switch Sports will be even worse? It does not bode well for Switch Sports indeed.

Fntastic793d ago

Wii Sports was ok for screwing around, but the games lacked depth. Also I'm not sure why it seems like they decided to stick with the automatic player movement so all you need to do is swing to hit something. Very noob friendly but not as much fun IMO.

CrimsonWing69793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

Wii Sports was THE game for casuals. I don’t feel many casuals own the Switch. I can’t see this doing the numbers Wii Sports did.

Einhander1971793d ago

Course it won't, the Wii was a phenomenon. Something new with the motion tech. A curiosity to almost everyone. Obviously Switch sports won't create the same impact.

Because we all miss accidentally throwing our Wiimotes at the TV, so let's throw some Joy-Cons.

Neonridr824d ago

VR is the same way, wrist straps for a reason.

Neonridr824d ago

I loved the golf from Wii Sports Resort.

Cuzizkool823d ago

I was always confused by Nintendo’s decision to kill the franchise. “Super” stayed with Mario titles even after the Super Nintendo. They can still use the Wii name. Hell it’s been so long that releasing a new one, or even an HD remaster, will tap into that nostalgia market.

DazaMc823d ago

Super Mario launched on the NES not the Super NES.

septemberindecember823d ago

Super was never because of the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Bros launched on the NES. The Super is because it's an indirect sequel to Mario Bros.

They can just call it Nintendo Sports or something, but using the Wii name would be a bit confusing.

Bigman4k823d ago

Yeah i agree but i don't think Nintendo will be bringing wii sports to the Nintendo Switch samething goes for diddykong racing
