After An Abysmal January, 3DS's Turnaround Provides Hope For Wii U's Future

Chris Pereira: ''Knowing the Wii U's immediate sales prospects weren't as great as it had hoped is what prompted Nintendo to recently slash sales projections for the console. Rather than expecting to sell 5.5 million units by the end of March, it was now expecting 4 million units to be sold by that same point. That is a significant cut, and one which meant Nintendo was anticipating just under a million units to sell worldwide in the first three months of 2012 after ending 2012 with 3.06 million units sold.

There was invariably going to be a drop-off as the year started because Nintendo systems sell best around the holidays, but without the excuse of supply constraints, a million consoles in three months didn't sound great. Now, at least in the United States, the Wii U's start to the year has been nothing short of abysmal. And while that's rightfully concerning, Nintendo is not far removed from having dealt with a system that many argued was down for the count before it ever made it to store shelves, which could prove to be useful as it moves forward with Wii U.'' Thank goodness the 3DS is selling just like the good ole GBA during GameCube days.
Anyone played Treasure's Astro Boy and Capcom's TLOZ: Minish Cap on GBA? great games!

Minish Cap is awesome! I got close to finishing it but never did. I recently transferred my ambassador certificate to my new 3DS so I'm starting to play it again.

3DS is only selling well in Japan. In the US...not really. Last January it got outsold by the PS3. The PS3!

I think the WiiU's success will be determined by what Sony and M$ have up their sleeve this year.

The WiiU is a great console but
-The name is wrong WiiU sounds like an add-on to the Wii for the average consumer.
-The ipad and galaxy tabs as-well as its mini-me the 3DS are all competing in the same market.
-It is not TRULY next gen, when the Ps4 and Xbox 720 come out they will (99.9999999% sure) be significantly more powerful.
-Lack of 3rd party support.

I think if Ninty play their cards right the WiiU will be fine, the unfortunate thing is that Nintendo are in a position where MS and Sony have to make mistakes for the WiiU to be a success while still fighting Apple and Samsung as well as the 3DS indirectly.

This is my opinion and I hope you respect it.

Generations aren't decide by power. If they were, the PSX would have been a generation behind the N64 and PS2 a generation behind the GC and Xbox1.

Simply being stronger than the previous generations consoles is enough. So long as the hardware can bring me something that I couldn't get on any last gen console, I consider it next gen.

and let's not forget http://www.technobuffalo.co... so ps3 and 360, first three months are terrible compared to wii u's, so yeah, i am not worried about the wii u, just like the 3ds, wait unil the e3, things will pick up

Nintendo is a sleeping giant. Their handheld sales can keep them afloat, even if the WiiU is a turd. There is so much doom and gloom in articles about Nintendo's future, even the positive ones. People forget that Nintendo IS gaming. Nintendo IS consoles. Nintendo IS the industry.

I am saying this as a primarily Sony console player: "Nintendo will never die"

I hope Nintendo is always in the console business. I've always enjoyed their systems. I'll be purchasing a PS4 and A Wii U.
