Playeressence's Furious Francis discusses how the Wii U can benefit from a universal achievement system similar to the Xbox 360 and PS3.
I love trophies and achievements. When they are done well they add content to a game and they can also be a lot of fun.
I think I'd be more interested in the idea if it took an automatic screenshot or ten second video and posted it on Miiverse showing the moment you received the accomplishment. Basically make it more social than how it's been utilized on other platforms.
Thats a good idea, I just want Nintendo to provide some sort of reward to discuss with your friends on MiiVerse.
i agree, too. i overcame my trophy-addiciton 2 years ago, but the wii u desperately needs such a system. i really want a reason for switching my wii u on again and i also would like to have a reason why i should care about other people on the miiverse. just watching them prance around doesn't do the trick for me as a consumer.
I disagree. I hate achievements. I love to play games because I enjoy them. If you need achievements its because you are A. Insecure B. A child C. A chav
If you feel the need to complain about something that is completely optional, refer to your own 'a,b,c' advice.
@droid control ^ owned!
I've always been a staunch supporter of trophies/achievements, but you, sir, have turned me around. Fantastic logic. Seriously though, Nintendo have created this fantastic social experience on their console that let's people discuss games in a clean, safe, creative environment. It's fantastic and innovative and if you haven't checked it out yet, I strongly suggest you do. The only thing missing? Actually being able to compare games. Even if it's a progress bar - "This player has finished 58% of Game A" - the Miiverse would be better for it, although full achievements would be even greater.
What if you don't need them? But find some of them fun? What does that make you?
DC is scared.
No they really don't. Achievements add nothing to games except an award which you get nothing.
they are rewarding, fun and addictive
not really awarding since you don't get anything besides a number next to your gamertag and your immersion into the game broken by a big ding during the middle of a cutscene. Rewarding is when you go out of your way to find a secret hidden item that your friends didn't know about. Now devs just tell you exactly where it is and how to get it in order to get a.....number. I don't like being told how to play my games and games never had a problem with replay value before so when someone can come up with a legitimate argument as to why trophies are good then please do tell.
If you read the article you'll see that its more than just text. Its a social experience the other consoles have and Nintendo is missing out on.
look I respect your opinion but if u want a legit Reason u got it, Imagine if achievements and trophies got canceled now by sony and ms, the net will blow up, imagine the outrage, the petitions, the requests, the youtube vids, the tweets etc... , U may not give a F*** but majority of gamers like it and find it rewarding and addictive, do u remember how many people wanted trophies for MGS 4???
for me its doesnt add anything
Personally I find Achievements to be a gimped way of extending a game but if other people want these vanity-badges and I have the option of turning them off, I don't have a problem with Nintendo adding them to the Wii U.
Fully agree. My only issue is that with the rise of these worthless things we have seen a rise in DLC that used to be included with the game. But hey, this new gen of gamers thinks getting a ding! is worth more than actual content so what is a old gamer to do?
I would like achievements because when im low on cash and cant buy a new game i have to play old games and the achievements allows me to replay old games and have just as much fun as if they were new. Achievements probably would work the best for nintendo type games since they are cartoony and such. Heck pokemon black2 has them but they are called medals. Now give me that in every game but unified and across all games! also the trophies in smash bros is like achievements to. they need to unify everything though. This type of stuff will work so good with nintendo ip's. if they added achievements and gave you club nintendo points for it or something then nintendo would be dominating this gen for sure.
Same @NeverS0ft Personally, I'm like MEH. But if this floats the CORE's boat why not add it - to please a more diverse customer base before the Wii U Fit Drops.
BS, who needs achievements. They add nothing to the games.
While Achievement can give you bragging rights with your friends if you can get some of the harder to attain ones, all they are designed for is so that the developer can milk extra time from their games once you finish them. Picture this, in the old days of the NES or SNES, you played a game until you finished it and then moved onto the next. Developers have added in these achievements so that you will spend more time with the game even after you finish it. Look at some of these achievements nowadays - Kill 100,000 people in Multiplayer for Gears of War 2 - is that really necessary?? Or Gears of War 3 asks you to reach level 100 and get an Onyx medal for every category. A little overkill...
Sometimes they are fun, and done right, but it seems nowadays half the achievements are for finishing the game, a few more are for beating the game on harder difficulties, and then the last remaining stuff is either kill a ridiculous amount of people, or go on a scavenger hunt looking for useless items scattered around each level (intel kits on Call of Duty).
I wouldn't care either way if Nintendo wanted to add them in as they do have SOME value, but to say that they are integral to a game, or they give you the utmost satisfaction is going a little too far in my opinion.
If third parties actually cared enough to integrate miiverse, miiverse could and has been used for achievements.
i replay games because there good games that deserve to be played again, hell ive played silent hill 2 and mgs3 on ps2 over 30 times and brought the hd collections of both on ps3 and mgs hd on vita and mgs3 on 3ds. achievments add nothing as a shit game is shit and i wouldn't replay it afterwards anyway. there not worth my time. i've played all the uncharted numourous times and not even 50% trophys on them because i cant be arsed, i play games for fun. thats why i still play wind waker and twilight princess even though i have a wii u and ps3.
