Why Bioshock Infinite Will Save The First-Person Shooter

Since its birth in the form of the legendary Wolfenstein 3D, the humble first-person shooter has evolved into a blockbusting, technology-pushing beast of a genre. Often at the forefront of innovation and graphical prowess, such is the thirst for more realistic-looking dismemberment, games such as Doom, Quake, Unreal and Halo have not only advanced and expanded what was expected of their own genre but made technological leaps and taken huge risks that have paid off for gaming as a whole. (BioShock: Infinite, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, PC, PS3, Wolfenstein 3D, Xbox 360)

Too late. Killzone 2 already saved the first person shooter.
animegamingnerd  +   614d ago
how the hell did a 4 year old game change a genre that has been getting stale for the last few years
ajax17  +   614d ago
The Resistance series is SO much better.

I'll admit I liked the gameplay, like how the gun feels like it has weight when you run not like Call of Duty where you can sprint with a LMG and obviously the graphics and aesthetics are good, also I like the design of the Helghast soliders, but to say that it saved the FPS? No, I'm sorry but Killzone has some of the worst dialogue and characters ever. I hate Sev and Rico, I was actually hoping the Helghast would kill them haha and in Killzone 3 with the commander that you saved, I forget his name, he is bar none the worst commander. He would say that he was going to do something, Rico would yell some cheesy dialogue with a few curses and the commander does a 180 and changes his mind. That happened like 10 times. And it wasn't even like Rico said anything worth saying or had inside information that the commander didn't know, just saying that he's going to do things his way and the commander submitted everytime. Sorry for the rant, I just played Killzone 3 so its fresh in my mind. But like I said the gameplay and graphics are good, but it really didn't save the FPS. I am very excited for Bioshock, PC Gamer said in their preview it was like playing Half-Life 2 for the first time…I hope its true!

I wasn't aware FPSs needed saving.
classic200  +   614d ago
More like reinventing the genre.
animegamingnerd  +   614d ago
yeah i agree FPS are getting old they need something new or they will just die off
thezeldadoth  +   614d ago
at this point all the genres need reinvented. and i dont mean turn every genre into a hybrid rpg, or add a bunch of scripted dialogue like last of us
ziggurcat  +   614d ago
@ thezeldadoth

hate to break it to you, buddy, but dialogue in any game is scripted.

citing last of us just makes you look butthurt because nintendo won't make games that look that good.

Yeah, dialogue should just be a random word generator.

Purple monkey dishwasher.
thezeldadoth  +   614d ago
sorry you can't understand the comment. obviously dialogue is scripted. I'm talking about people who look at the last of us's over use of dialogue to the point of nausea and people think "ohhh revolutionary" I dont want to hear some sarcastic quirky kid blab her mouth every time i hit a button. But talking bad about the lord and saviors naughty dog on here is blasphemy i already knew that.

@ziggurcat i rarely even play nintendo games i'm primarily a PC gamer and sorry naughty dog won't make a game that looks as good as the witcher 2 for another 10 years.

Last of us looks like a great game, not because of amazing ai or anything else people on here go on about. It has intense atmosphere thanks to sound and instant death encounters. Naughty dog is bringing us old school gameplay mixed with the cinematic stuff every game 'needs' these days.

i don't want them to die because i do enjoy them but i sure am getting tired of every game being FPS.
LOGICWINS  +   614d ago
Metal Gear Rising, Ascension, P4: The Golden, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Catherine, LBP 2, LBP Vita, Darksiders, Darksiders 2, DMC, Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles, Nier, Batman: AA, Batman: AC, Mortal Kombat, UFC 3, DOA 5, AC2, AC3, AC Liberation, Zero Escape Virtue's Last Reward, Motorstorm, Splinter Cell, Uncharted, Journey, Gravity Rush, The Walking Dead, Outland, Infamous 1, Infamous 2...

Every game isn't a first person shooter.
BlackTar187  +   613d ago
logic i can make a list of games released in the last 6 month to match that list in #. My point stands. Im so happy you were able to prove that not every single game is FPS CLAPS slowly for you
Outside_ofthe_Box  +   614d ago
Uh, CoD has been killing the genre for sometime. Nearly all FPSs play like it or have some form of influence from CoD.

Exactly what I was thinking.
maniacmayhem  +   614d ago
All I know is Bioshock 1 was a masterpiece and one of the only games I replayed on a harder difficulty multiple times.

This one is going to be a must have.
urwifeminder  +   614d ago
Biocrap is what it means to me.
Megaton  +   614d ago
Dial your expectations back a bit.
hano  +   614d ago
As if FPS needs saving...we see one every month and they sell millions upon millions. I'm sick of them, how many do we need really? COD even releases 1 every year and zomg, they are always best sellers.
Eventually, this will cause a lot of people to lose interest in the genre like what happened to the fighting genre in the 90's
OhReginald  +   614d ago
kinda wished it was a TPS. o well
Kevlar009  +   614d ago
Games like Bioshock and Metroid Prime sure put FPS's on another level. More than just graphics or kill count, they are about atmosphere, creating a believable world. A world we won't want to forget
dafegamer  +   614d ago
dont forget Portal
cpayne93  +   613d ago
Wouldn't really call that a fps, just like skyrim isn't an fps. It's a puzzle game in first person.

Farcry 3 already did that and is now this gen's standard...
Bathyj  +   614d ago
Good for them for not making multiplayer. I hope it pays off.
ALLWRONG  +   614d ago
FPS has been rock solid past couple years.
e-p-ayeaH  +   614d ago
in terms of innovation = zero
Kratoscar2008  +   613d ago
Well innovation doesnt tend to pay off like familiarity does, hence CoD constant rehashs.
ALLWRONG  +   613d ago
Maybe you should play better games.
kevnb  +   614d ago
And what it does is bring back what made fps games of then late 90s and early 2000s special. System shock 2, half life, deus ex, thief etc...

e-p-ayeaH  +   614d ago
A little to soon to say things like that.

First Person Shooter isnt exactly innovative at this point because developers don't want to take bold moves.

Far cry 3 was amazing. We need more games like it. Cod either die or make the gameplay need skills and have better visuals ..
Canary  +   613d ago
At what point did the most ubiquitous genre of gaming become endangered?

Did I miss it? Or are FPS fans throwing hissy fits because we've finally got some diverse libraries of games this generation?

I mean, not so say that Ni no Kuni would have been ten times better if you played the game looking down the barrel of a shotgun. Because, yeah--hell yeah.
