There has always been an inherent tension between the forces of story and interactivity in video games, but developers are now increasingly hiring professional writers to help craft deeper and more absorbing worlds and characters to further engage players.
Veteran writer and game designer Matt Costello is at the forefront of the push to improve the art of interactive storytelling.
Costello has scripted dozens of best-selling games, including the groundbreaking The 7th Guest, Doom 3, Just Cause, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Shellshock Nam '67, and is currently working on Rage with id Software and Just Cause 2 for Eidos.
He has also penned many successful novels, film and television scripts, and pen-and-paper role playing games.
Fresh from speaking at last week's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, Costello is speaking tomorrow in Melbourne at a workshop for writers interested in adapting their work for games. Fortunately, he also found time to chat to Screen Play for an interview.
