EGM Review: Aliens: Colonial Marines

Most game developers are problem-solvers by nature, and few dilemmas vex them more than the challenge of building a great videogame based on a licensed franchise. So, when Sega announced in 2006 that they’d tapped the crew at Gearbox Software—creators of the beloved Borderlands titles—to take a stab at the Alien universe, it gave gamers and Xeno fans alike a reason to hope.

More than six years later, Aliens: Colonial Marines has finally arrived, allowing us to see whether the gang from Plano, Texas, could take one of gaming’s most-aped intellectual properties and deliver an experience that does the feature films justice. (Aliens: Colonial Marines, PC, PS3, Xbox 360) 9/10

But everyone is and thats the point. Its the opposite of giving a great game like ni no kuni a 7... Yeah i am talking to you Game Informer!!! U got that one dead wrong...and 1 month kater dead space 3 gets a 9.75 putting it in legendary status. Cant wait to see their review on this game.
Jazz4108  +   555d ago
Ni no kunai deserved that score as it wasnt that good. You really must need your exclusive rpg fix if thats the case. This game is no nine out of ten though.
joab777  +   555d ago
It's an opinion but it's one backed up by 95% of reviewers. I am betting u didn't even play it. It's a great jrpgs and...oh yeah...it's a great game in general. It's gorgeous, has great combat system, the story isn't bad, and it blends strengths from some of the best jrpgs out there. And what I love most is that unlike most games today, it doesn't try and cater to the masses. It is classic rpg in glorious hd. But that's why I love games, everyone can have an opinion...whether it's right or not!

O_o Playing the game now and I see it's shortcomings, what they could/should do or perhaps I should write what I would LIKE them to do. Even as it stands now I couldn't give it at 9/10.
Bio_Mod  +   555d ago
Are you enjoying it though? mine still hasn't arrived yet.
Myst  +   555d ago
Mm so-so. Reminds me of how I felt about Raccoon City was fun with friends but not so much alone. I was streaming it for a bit and that made it a bit more fun. overall though eh....I can only say it's so-so...

I got a question for anyone to answer me. Gearbox was the main dev for this game along with some random companies. A little flash history, they released Borderlands 2, great game that gets like an 89 metacritic, now this games gets a 49 metacritic and now I am like "how does a triple A dev team makes such a superb title then makes a crap title afterwards?"

Were there development troubles, so far I learned of lengthly delays and that this game was originally shown on the PS2 back in 2001 I am going to keep investigating the dev cycle of this game. I am really intrigue by the massive drop of quality from Borderlands 2 to Aliens, I am pretty sure it isn't so simple as in they got lazy.

If there are any Gearbox faithfuls around here, please enlighten me. I haven't been following this dev team and I am really concerned about their abilities to make a good game. I really want to see a good Duke Nukem game come from Gearbox, especially after DNF.

Of course, I still haven't played this game and I believe I should judge it myself but that 49 meta rating speaks very high. Well then, to google and any replys will be grateful.

Teltales made The Walking game(awesome) then they made Jurasic Park(shit game)

see the patern?
Etackett2010  +   555d ago
Actually, they made Jurassic Park first then they made The Walking Dead.
Actually, i think I found the problem, there's an article on IGN interviewing a former Gearbox member about the dev history of Aliens.

JP came first... then walking dead. the pattern is.....try and try again till you get it right. they didnt give up and they got it right. pattern is called persistence+learning from mistakes=success
ColinZeal  +   555d ago
Colonial Marines was mostly outsourced. So, Gearbox wasn´t really leading the project as I understand it.
MysticStrummer  +   555d ago
Well that's stupid on their part then. I'm sure Sega paid them well to do it, and they used the "We only finished it" excuse for Duke Nukem so they figured they could get away with it again, but eventually they'll do it once too often and be screwed.

I don't understand some gamers on this site i mean I've played game's that got 3's,4's,5's,6' s etc and i enjoyed them.

'Resident Evil ORC' is one Example it was not the best game ever but i enjoyed it enough that i Platinum it on my PS3.

I disliked some games that got 9's and 10's like 'Dishonored' that got lots of high scores but i didn't like it i found it a bit boring.

My point is that at the end of the day a review is just someone else's opinion what matters is what you personally think i mean if you listen to review's as like 'the word of god' you could be missing a enjoyable experience.

As for me i have read a lot of review's for this game some good, some bad but I'm still willing to give it a try not just as a gamer but as a fan of the movies as well.

If you go just by scores then I agree, but I've read too many specific problems with Aliens to justify a full price purchase. Reviews are indeed just someone else's opinion, but this game is getting buried by nearly everyone. We're not talking about a random low score for shock value by Jim Sterling. We're talking about multiple 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s, and they mostly have the same complaints which would indicate something other than a bug you may or may not see. Having said that I'm fighting the urge to go buy it anyway, simply because it's Aliens and has online co-op.
aliengmr  +   555d ago
The point of a review is to help you decide whether to pay 60$ up front to make your own opinion.

With games, you pay at the door. On PC, we very rarely get demos.

Multiple reviews objectively listing the same issues and giving roughly similar scores should tell you something. That a near perfect score pops up in a sea disgust should also tell you something.

Reviews are supposed to be a mix of opinion and objectivity. Too much of either will negate the entire thing. You give a game that hasn't received anything higher than a 5, a 9/10 you better back that up or lose your credibility.
axerated  +   555d ago
While I think 'yeah fair enough, the consensus is that this game sucks' I am yet to dislike playing it, he'll lollipop chainsaw scores higher than this and I thought that game was damn near unplayable, and I'm genuinely having fun with this. Each to their own I guess
Fatty  +   555d ago
If I ever had to use the word "subpar" in a review, I don't think I could give it a 9 or higher.

Sad EGM
overrated44  +   555d ago
This isn't the first time EGM has had a ridiculously high score for a game that was being reviewed rather poorly... I'm talking about Rage, EGM was given the right to release their review before other publications and oh look at that it was also a 9 if I remember correctly, AND the review was far higher than most other reviews. EGM was amazing when I was a kid, it's now a husk of the wonderful magazine I used to receive in the mail as a child.
